Cup of Coffee: 3 June 2015 Not Exactly the Best

Another dreary, windy day. There have been a few good days, but overall this has been a Goat's Head Soup kind of spring.

    1. I will also admit that seeing this made me spend more time than I have this morning trying to find audio of the classic Gardy "showtime" meltdown.

  1. Caveat: I don't recall a particular discussion about this album (probably before my time here) thought I know there's been a long running bit/feud about The Beatles v. The Stones ... The Repository wasn't all that helpful so I'll just ask, what's the problem with Goats Head Soup?

    1. What's the problem with Goats Head Soup

Besides the fact it has two good songs, a dumb album name and was stuck between two classic albums (Exile, It's Only Rock and Roll)? Nothing.

      1. Nah. Just trying to steal from the prog rockers on that album name. (Brain Salad Surgery was also released in 1973)

      2. Two songs is probably not fair. "Silver Train," "Coming Down Again," "100 Years Ago," "Winter," "Star Star" and "Dancing with Mr. D" all were decent songs.

        1. I don't hear any of those songs on KQ, ergo they're not any good.

Probably the biggest issue with GHS is that it was the Exile on Main Street follow up (which followed Sticky Fingers, which followed Let it Bleed, which followed Beggar's Banquet). That's quite a stretch of big boy albums. So GHS was the first so-so Stones album since On Her Satanic Majesty's Request, GHS will always pale in comparison to what came before, plus the follow was It's only Rock and Roll.

          1. Silver Train is a good one. Star Star is not gonna be on KQ any time soon. Let's put it this way. I've listened to Exile literally hundreds of times and every time I'm almost euphoric when I get done listening. GHS, I've listened to maybe 10 times.

            1. I just now typed "Exile" into Spotify to listen to it for the first time in a while, and the top result was matchbox twenty's "Exile on Mainstream." I know you can't fight the general public, but man, Spotify should know a guy's tendencies better than that.

      1. I caught the call back, I just wanted to know why Goats Head was a target of ire in here. free's response ("Probably the biggest issue...") is what I thought was behind it, but wasn't sure. Due to a late start, I only own the studio albums Let it Bleed and Exile which I bought after getting my hands on the "best of" compilation* Hot Rocks '64-'71, and deciding there were full length albums I needed to own.

*As had been my custom with classic rock groups that I hadn't been exposed to growing up (which was most of them).

        1. Not ire so much as gentle jest. As SBG notes, I was in the Tim Duncan Beatles camp.

All intended to be in good fun. But, as he also noted, sometimes the poking drifts into scab-picking territory and ceases to be good fun.

        2. compilation*
          *As had been my custom

Sounds like a good idea. Realize that some compilations are good and some are not.

I didn't much like Bob Marley Legend or Jimi Hendrix The Ultimate Experience. Part of the deal might be that I didn't start there with those artists, but used them to collect some popular songs that weren't on the albums I had.
I do like Jimi Hendrix Smash Hits, but that was my introduction, too. THR had the LP and the poster with Jimi Hendrix on a Horse with a Holster.

I think a good rule to think of is look for contemporary compliations if they're available.
Hot Rocks fits, as does another of THR's LPs that I listened to: Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass).

    2. More broadly, brianS "not a fan" of the Stones, owned only that album. According to allmusic.com, the Rolling Stones released nine five star albums, seven 4 1/2 star albums and 2 four star albums. GHS is rated at 3 1/2 stars. If you have bought the, at best, the 19th best album that a band released, you might not have a proper appreciation of them.

        1. Depending on weather, might ride the bike to the stadium and check out the atmosphere, see if someone wants to sell me a ticket cheap after it starts.

          1. I hear you about the weather. I was just getting ready to run some errands/break in the bike after last night's tune-up, but then I looked outside.

  2. AMR, I'd feared the end of jacket-friendly weather would cause problems for the continuation of our clandestine activities, but I was thoroughly impressed by your tactics this morning.

    1. end of jacket-friendly weather

I adapted to Texas very quickly, because I still consider it chilly up here.

      1. I'd had the last item I gave to you for more than a week. Actually, the one I gave you was a second attempt; the original one got crushed in my pocket.

  3. FYI: The best way to reach me is email. I get the Facebook notifications but can't respond most of the time.

For the site, the backend crashed. Turns out you need to pay attention and tune things otherwise it just crashes.

    1. So Stauffer is gone after the doubleheader?

That still leaves an ridiculous thirteen man pitching staff and punchless bench.

  4. I'll just note that I'm glad that Plouffe! is having success. He was a favorite after he started ms painting picture of he and _elmon.

So just in case you see Delmon roaming the streets, keep the potato chips, french fries, and white bread away. He’s watching his figure.
    Until next time, Trevor.

    Man I miss those posts.

  5. Made it to North Dakota, though still a ways from Fargo. Funny thing--they only let you drive 75 on the interstate here. What's up with that?

  6. The WNT kicks off their World Cup on Monday at 6:30. Anyone interested in a watch party, either at a pub or someone's place? It'll take some convincing, but the roommate might let me do it here. That's very big might, though.

    1. Pumping the brakes here, I didn't realize that FOX had the rights. I didn't think that kicked in until the next men's WC. I thought this was ABC/ESPN's last go-round. I don't have cable or login credentials for the FOX mobile app. So my place is out, unless someone else wants to bring along a tablet/phone so has such rights and we can chromecast it.

      1. And here I figured "pumping the brakes here" would refer to your earlier post about running errands on your bike.

      2. OK, so I do have access to the game on my tablet. Buuuut, en Español solamente.

        1. And talking to myself some more, NBC Universo doesn't have Chromecast compatibility, so boo.

          1. Depending on the vintage of your tablet, you may be able to stream the entire screen contents. It may have too much lag, though...

            1. I can cast my entire screen, but depending on the wifi strength it does get choppy at times as you mentioned.

      1. Missing Wayzata and Mankato, but Sconnie still wins with Chequamegon.

        1. I was hoping for a few more, and I imagine there are lots of states you could do this with.

    1. That was more fascinating than I thought it would be. Also, there is no reason to sport a neckbeard in this day and age.

    2. Very cool--that sort of thing is completely up my alley. Thanks for sharing.

  7. Better late than never: the Minor Details post that would normally have been up this morning is up now.

  8. @RossRaihala live tweets concerts in the Twin Cities. I'll be watching his feed while I toil away here in B-town.

  9. In today's edition if f*** Apple: my wife got her non-iphone. I think i fixed her iPhone with a new battery, but virgin allows 14 days to return the phone if you don't likw it so she's trying it out.

Now that she's switched from an Apple phone, however, she can't receive text messages from iPhones. Since internet research shows that it's because she never deactivated imessage. That is some serious bullshit. The internet also tells me some might try to charge her $20 to deactivate her number from the service.

Ugh, I hate Apple more than I can describe. It's not enough that they can't bother to use the same charging adapter connection or make useable ui'ui's, but they also have to use a proprietary messaging system and make it completely but obvious that it would cause problems if you switched to a phone that works? Assholes.

      1. It kept erroring out when I entered her number last night. It finally says it sent the code today, so we'll see if it actually works or not. I'm not confident it will because I am very cynical about Apple.

        1. I figured you'd seen this, but just in case. I understand your cynicism with Apple. This sort of thing is one more reason why I'd be very reluctant to ever go that direction. Hell, there are parts of having an Android tablet I don't like for not being able to tinker properly.

          1. In the end it worked, she's now able to receive texts from iProducts. It'll be interesting to see if she decides to go back to it after this experience.

You can tinker the hell out of the android, though, if you root it. However, I do know that it's against Virgin's TOS.

            1. I have my phone rooted, but a bad experience and am hesitant to try fiddling too much again.

On my tablet, I want a terminal.

              1. I've rooted pretty much every phone I've had, and am happily using the Nexus 6 now.

You can change quite a bit without rooting it, too. I'd certainly recommend Nova Launcher as a place to start, and depending what you want to do and your technical know-how, Tasker is an immensely powerful app.

                1. Tasker is pretty rad. IFTTT has a pretty nice android app to for those who want something a bit more user friendly.

                  1. More than anything, I just want to be able to delete the bloatware that came on this. I only have 1GB of internal memory.

                    1. yeah root is great for that.

I miss my old phones that I could root and have on the latest release well after Big V stopped supporting them. Then they locked down the Boot Loader w/ my Moto X which really sucked

except google owned moto so it was well supported and not much bloat

Still miss root though, its pretty hard to brick a phone these days unless you really don't know what you are doing.

What are you rocking? I'm tempted to pick up a moto e or g just to mess around with w/ a prepay sim

                    2. Virgin LG F3. Last time I tried to remove some bloat, I accidentally deleted the home screen. Factory restore didn't do anything. Had to reinstall whole new everything. As of right now, it's rooted, but I haven't done anything more than that.

If you're fairly familiar with rooted phones, I may ask for your help customizing this phone. I really like it except for the storage restrictions I run up against.

                    3. I was on Verizon with a first gen moto x and it was not too bad. Then, we switched to T-Mobile. I definitely love having the new released promptly. I am right now running the M prerelease, with tweaks for root and performance.

Between yickit and me, we can probably give you some guidance.

                2. How's the size for the Nexus 6? My Nexus 4 is similar to your first gen Moto X (I'm assuming you went X -> 6) and I might have to think about getting a new phone if M doesn't support the Nexus 4. I am hoping the Nexus 5 comes back but I don't know.

                  1. It's huge, but I love it. I'm a pretty big guy with large hands (over an octave stretch on a piano), so it fits well for me. I also have pretty big pockets, which plays into the whole portability thing. The speakers on the front extend a little beyond the screen, so when I take it out of my pocket or really move it around in general, I just grab onto those for grip.

I've had it for about 2 months, and I absolutely love it, but I'd defintely suggest trying it out at your local shop or a while first.

                    1. I looked at that when I bought my Samsung Galaxy Mega. Love the large size, and I typically wear cargo pants so carrying it is not a problem.

                  2. The nexus 6 is enormous, I'm going from a X 1 gen to 2 gen just because of that . I like to one hand my phone. The 6 and galaxy note are great phones. I just wish they made a smaller nexus.

  10. Barnes just absolutely robbed Andre Ethier. Great catch at the wall in Coors.
