Taylor Rogers shines in a Red Wings win. The Lookouts win a close one. The Miracle loses a close one. Sam Gibbons doesn't strike anyone out, but still pitches well in a Kernels victory.
ROCHESTER 2, SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 1 IN SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE
Batting stars: Danny Ortiz was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Argenis Diaz was 1-for-3 with a double.
Pitching stars: Taylor Rogers struck out eight in eight innings, giving up a run on six hits and no walks. A. J. Achter pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.
Opposition stars: Gregorio Petit was 2-for-3. Bryan Mitchell pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts. Nick Rumbelow struck out two in two perfect innings.
The game: The RailRiders got on the board in the third inning on a pair of singles and a ground out. In the fourth, Ortiz delivered a two-run double that put the Red Wings in front 2-1. And that was it for the scoring. The biggest threat the RailRiders had came in the eighth, when a pair of singles put men on first and second with two out.
Of note: Danny Santana was 1-for-4 with a run. James Beresford was 1-for-4 with a run. Oswaldo Arcia was 0-for-4.
CHATTANOOGA 4, BIRMINGHAM 3 IN BIRMINGHAM
Batting stars: Max Kepler was 1-for-2 with a two-run homer (his third) and two walks. Jorge Polanco was 0-for-1 with three walks and a run. Mike Gonzales was 2-for-4 with a run.
Pitching stars: Jose Berrios pitched three shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks with one strikeout. Jake Reed retired all four batters he faced. J. T. Chargois struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars: Danny Hayes was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk, driving in one. Frankie Montas struck out six in five innings, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks.
The game: Kepler hit a two-run homer in the fourth to put the Lookouts up 2-0. They still led 3-1 when Hayes' RBI double was the key hit in a two-run sixth that tie the score 3-3. The Lookouts scored the go-ahead run in the seventh on two singles and a double play, and it held up. The Barons got the tying run to second in the seventh and ninth but could not bring him around.
Of note: Miguel Sano was 1-for-4. Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-4. Berrios came out of the game after only three innings. The last out of the third was a ground ball hit off his right leg. It appears that he was simply removed as a precaution.
BRADENTON 6, FORT MYERS 5 IN BRADENTON (11 INNINGS)
Batting stars: Mitch Garver was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Marcus Knecht was 1-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in two. Alex Swim was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
Pitching stars: Corey Williams pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk. Todd Van Steensel struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars: Chris Diaz was 3-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one. Barrett Barnes was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs. Frank Duncan pitched five innings of relief, allowing one run on four hits and no walks with three strikeouts.
The game: Knecht had a two-run double in a four-run third that put the Miracle up 4-0. The Marauders chipped away, scoring one in the third and two in the fourth to make it 4-3. Barnes doubled and scored in the fifth to tie it 4-4 and a Harold Ramirez RBI single put the Marauders up 5-4 in the sixth. The Miracle tied it in the ninth on a Chad Christensen RBI single, but that was the last hit the Miracle got. In the eleventh, three consecutive one-out singles brought home the winning run.
Of note: Zach Granite was 0-for-4 with a walk and a run. Stephen Gonsalves pitched 3.2 innings, giving up three runs on five hits and three walks with two strikeouts.
CEDAR RAPIDS 8, LANSING 3 IN CEDAR RAPIDS
Batting stars: Tanner English was 3-for-4 with a home run (his second) and a triple, scoring three times and driving in three. Rafael P. Valera was 3-for-3 with a walk and three runs. Edgar Corcino was 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI.
Pitching stars: Sam Gibbons pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks with no strikeouts. Trevor Hildenberger pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.
Opposition stars: Ryan McBroom was 3-for-4 with a home run (his third) and a double, scoring twice. Rowdy Tellez was 1-for-4 with a home run, his seventh. Chris Carlson was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in one.
The game: English hit a two-run homer in the third to put the Kernels up 2-1. The lead held until the sixth, when Tellez homered to tie it 2-2. The Kernels went back in front with three in the seventh and took control with three in the eighth. The seventh-inning rally was greatly aided by an error.
Of note: Zack Larson was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Brett Doe was 0-for-4. Alex Real was 3-for-3 with a double and a walk.
