Where's my stars at!? Love this tune(s).
whoops.
Thanks bud - great song, great performance, great video.
I like Gordon much more than EAR does.
I always pull out "Song For a Winter's Night" every December, much to her chagrin.
THR (back in the hospital when a mosquito bite on his leg with the new knee made things blow up like cellulitis, but back out this afternoon) had Gord's Gold, Vol 2 as a cassette for heavy rotation in the minivan. It was almost the soundtrack to one of our family trips out west (Black Hills maybe?). Now I listen to it and I hate the production (such 80s very drums), but most of the songs behind it are still good.
EAR does have a point about his songs being very similar to each other and without much dynamism within each song. Tough. "Fellas, it's been good to know ye!"
In addition to "Edmund Fitzgerald" and "Winter's Night", I'd put "Sundown" and "If You Could Read My Mind" in my list of essentials.
I think that samey-ness prevented and continues to prevent me from wanting to hear much more from him, I think I'd rather track down different versions of those songs.
I've heard enough of his other songs to realize that searching for the hooks takes some time, and I'm not interested enough to find them.
I agree with your list of essentials. At our choosing, "Sundown" was in heavy rotation on juke box at the bar a buddy and I frequented in college.
Please feel free to play more Gordon Lightfoot any time. And I don't think his songs sound all that similar.
