I'm pressed for time today, so this will be short.
It's tempting to say that the Twins should stop scheduling the Tigers, given their record against them, but last night was a good game. In case you haven't noticed, David Price is a Really Good Pitcher. If not for one game against the Yankees in April, his numbers would be Incredibly Awesome, rather than Really Good. The Twins have struggled to score runs sometimes, but there's no shame in getting shut down by Price. Yes, they missed some chances early, and that's frustrating, but that's one of the things that happens when you face a Really Good Pitcher.
Mike Pelfrey pitched well. His numbers say four runs in 7.2 innings, but had Hicks caught Gose's fly ball to center it might have been eight innings and two runs.* Had Blaine Boyer been able to retire Cespedes, it would've been 7.2 innings and three runs. The question, of course, is whether this means Pelfrey has turned it around and will start pitching well again, or whether this is the random good game that fools you into giving him five or six more starts. As we like to say, time will tell.
*The ball was hit hard, but Hicks should've caught it. Yes, they still recorded an out, but it meant there was a man on third with one out rather than a man on first with one out. We'll never know what would've happened, but it's at least possible that Pelfrey would've gotten out of the inning.
So, we move on. The Twins send Ervin Santana to the mound. I've been a skeptic, but he pitched really well in Rochester and pitched well in his one big league start this season. The Tigers counter with Justin Verlander. Not that long ago, that thought would've filled me with dread. It still doesn't exactly inspire confidence, but the fact is that Verlander wasn't very good last year and has been mediocre-to-terrible in four starts this year. So, we look at last night's game as a mere bump in the road. Tonight we start our season-ending seventy-six game winning streak! We'll just have to settle for 122-40!
