Minor Details: Games of July 25

A bad first inning dooms the Red Wings.  The Lookouts hold off a comeback attempt.  The Miracle gets fine pitching in splitting a doubleheader.  Sam Gibbons and two relievers produce a shutout for Cedar Rapids.  Cody Stashak continues to pitch well for the E-Twins.  The DSL Twins win a blowout.

COLUMBUS 5, ROCHESTER 1 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  James Beresford was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Oswaldo Arcia was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Pitching star:  Caleb Thielbar pitched a scoreless inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Michael Martinez was 2-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Jerry Sands was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Josh Tomlin pitched five innings, allowing one run on five hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  Martinez' two-run single capped a four-run first that put the Clippers up 4-0.  Beresford and Arcia opened the fourth with back-to-back doubles, producing the lone Red Wings run.  They brought the tying run up to bat that inning, but never did so again.  In fact, their last sixteen batters were retired.

Of note:  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-4.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-4.  Taylor Rogers pitched well after the first inning, but his line reads five innings, four runs, six hits, and three walks with three strikeouts.

CHATTANOOGA 4, TENNESSEE 3 IN TENNESSEE

Batting stars:  Kennys Vargas was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fourth) and two RBIs.  Max Kepler was 1-for-4 with a triple and a walk, scoring once.  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once.

Pitching stars:  David Hurlbut pitched seven shutout innings, giving up four hits and three walks with five strikeouts.  J. T. Chargois pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Billy McKinney was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Jacob Rogers was 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI.  Andres Santiago pitched six innings, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  The Lookouts scored on a double play in the third, Kepler tripled and scored in the sixth, Stuart Turner had an RBI single in the eighth, and Vargas homered in the ninth.  The Lookouts led 4-0 at that point and needed all four, because the Smokies came back to score three in the bottom of the ninth.  In fact, they had the bases loaded with one out before a popup and a ground out ended the game.

Of note:  Levi Michael was 0-for-3 with a walk.

TAMPA 2, FORT MYERS 0 IN FORT MYERS (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Logan Wade was 1-for-2 with a double.  Michael Quesada was 1-for-3 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Kohl Stewart struck out seven in six innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits and three walks.  Corey Williams pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Mike Ford was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Michael O'Neill was 2-for-3 with an RBI.  Dietrich Enns struck out six in four shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks.

The game:  O'Neill singled home a run in the fourth and a run scored on an error in the sixth to make it 2-0.  The biggest Miracle threat, really the only one, came in the third, when they put men on second and third with none out.

Of note:  Engelb Vielma was 0-for-3.  Mitch Garver was 0-for-2 with a walk.  D. J. Hicks was 0-for-3.

FORT MYERS 2, TAMPA 1 IN FORT MYERS (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Zach Granite was 1-for-2 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Michael Quesada was 1-for-2 with a double and a run.  Mitch Garver was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Stephen Gonsalves pitched six innings, giving up one run on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts.  Zach Jones pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits and a walk with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Tyler Wade was 2-for-4.  Angelo Gumbs was 0-for-1 with two walks.  Vicente Campos pitched five innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

The game:  A sacrifice fly in the third put the Miracle up 1-0.  The Yankees tied it in the fifth without a hit, getting two walks, a stolen base, and a productive out.  In the bottom of the fifth, Quesada led off with a double and came around to score on a pair of productive outs.  The Yankees put men on first and second with two out in the seventh and got a hit, but the potential tying run was thrown out at the plate.

Of note:  D. J. Hicks was 0-for-2 with a walk.

CEDAR RAPIDS 3, BELOIT 0 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Nick Gordon was 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring once.  Tyler Kuresa was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Pat Kelly was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.

Pitching stars:  Sam Gibbons pitched six shutout innings, giving up four hits and four walks with four strikeouts.  Yorman Landa struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and two walks.  Jared Wilson pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Max Kuhn was 1-for-2 with two walks.  Justin Higley was 2-for-4.  Cody Stull struck out three in 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing only a walk.

The game:  RBI singles by Zack Larson and Kuresa put the Kernels up 2-0 in the first and Sean Miller singled one home in the second to make it 3-0.  The Snappers threatened all day, loading the bases in the second, third, and seventh and putting men on second and third in the fifth.  They were 0-for-9 with men in scoring position and stranded thirteen runners.

Of note:  Tanner English was 0-for-2 with two walks.  Edgar Corcino was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Larson was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Austin Diemer was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.

ELIZABETHTON 5, KINGSPORT 3 IN KINGSPORT

Batting stars:  Travis Blankenhorn was 2-for-5 with a home run (his second) and two runs.  Alex Perez was 3-for-5 with a double and a run.  LaMonte Wade was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run.

Pitching stars:  Cody Stashak struck out seven in six innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and no walks.  Jose Abreu pitched two perfect innings with three strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  None.

The game:  It was tied at two until the fourth, when Blankenhorn homered to put the Twins ahead.  Amaurys Minier doubled in a run in the fifth to make it 4-2 and an error brought home a run in the eighth to make it 5-2.  The Mets got a run in the ninth and had two on with two out.

Of note:  Manuel Guzman was 0-for-2 with two walks.  Chris Paul was 1-for-4.

GCL RED SOX AT GCL TWINS AND VICE VERSA

A doubleheader was rained out.

Batting stars:  Jean Carlos Arias was 4-for-6 with two triples and a double, scoring twice and driving in three.  Yeltsin Encarnacion was 3-for-5 with a run and four RBIs.  Darling Cuesto was 3-for-5 with four runs.

Pitching stars:  Juan Herrera pitched seven shutout innings, giving up two hits and three walks with one strikeout.  Luis Bellorin pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition star:  Luis Benoit was 1-for-1 with two walks.

The game:  Jorge Parra had a two-run triple in a three-run second that put the Twins ahead 3-0.  They went on to get five in the fifth and six in the seventh, eventually taking a 15-0 lead before the Red Sox1 got one in the bottom of the eighth.

Of note:  Emmanuel Morel was 2-for-4 with two walks and two runs.  Antonio Tovar was 2-for-6, scoring once and driving in two.  Edgar Herrera was 1-for-4 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.
