Minor Details: Games of August 13

Xavier Avery and Pat Dean lead the Red Wings to  a spit.  Adam Brett Walker II and Brett Lee shine in a Lookouts victory.  The Miracle wastes a good performance by Luke Westphal.  The Kernels hang on for a victory.  Travis Blankenhorn hits a big homer for the E-Twins.  The GCL Twins and the DSL Twins are both blown out.

ROCHESTER 3, BUFFALO 0 IN BUFFALO (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Xavier Avery was 3-for-3 with a home run (his fifth) and three RBIs.  James Beresford was 2-for-4 with a run.  Eric Fryer was 2-for-3.

Opposition stars:  Andy Burns was 1-for-2.  Jeff Francis pitched six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

The game:  Avery singled in a run in the third and hit a two-run homer in the fifth.  He was not in the starting lineup--he replaced Oswaldo Arcia, who was hit in the right knee by a pitch in the first inning and immediately removed from the game.  I don't know any more about it than that.  The Bisons did not get a man past second base.

Of note:  Byron Buxton was 1-for-4 with a run.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-4.  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-2 with two walks.

BUFFALO 2, ROCHESTER 1 IN BUFFALO (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Pitching star:  Logan Darnell struck out five in 5.1 innings, giving up one run on one hit and one walk.

Opposition stars:  Chris Heisey was 1-for-4 with a home run.  Dalton Pompey was 1-for-3 with a run.  Phillippe Aumont struck out eight in six innings, allowing one run on three hits and four walks.

The game:  The Red Wings loaded the bases with none out in the third, but a double play scored their only run.  The Bisons tied it in the fourth when Pompey singled, stole second, stole third, and scored on a sacrifice fly.  With two out and none on in the seventh, Heisey hit a walkoff home run.

Of note:  James Beresford was 0-for-3.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 0-for-2 with a walk.  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-2 with a walk.  Xavier Avery was 0-for-3.

CHATTANOOGA 4, TENNESSEE 3 IN CHATTANOOGA

Batting stars:  Adam Brett Walker II was 3-for-4 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in one.  Max Kepler was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  D. J. Hicks was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Pitching star:  Brett Lee pitched 7.2 innings, giving up one run on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

The game:  The Smokies got one in the top of the fourth, but RBI singles by Hicks and Niko Goodrum in the bottom of the fourth put the Lookouts ahead 2-1.  Walker II singled home a run in the sixth and Heiker Meneses did the same in the eighth to make it 4-1.  The Smokies got four singles in the ninth, scoring two and eventually putting men on second and third with two out, but a strikeout ended the game.

Of note:  Levi Michael was 0-for-4.  Stephen Wickens was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.

The game:  With two out and none on in the second, Kelly tripled and Wiley doubled for the game's lone run.  The Miracle did not get a man past second base.

Of note:  Aderlin Mejia was 0-for-3.  Mitch Garver was 1-for-4.  Marcus Knecht was 0-for-3.

CEDAR RAPIDS 7, LAKE COUNTY 6 IN LAKE COUNTY

Batting stars:  Rafael P. Valera was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  T. J. White was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Edgar Corcino was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

The game:  The Captains had leads of 2-0 and 5-3, but a four-run fifth put the Kernels in front to stay.  RBI singles by Corcino and White tied the score at 5-5 and a throwing error brought in the other two runs.  Santander homered in the sixth to cut the lead to 7-6.  Neither team got a hit after that, with the Captains drawing two walks and the Kernels not even getting a baserunner.

The game:  Sandy Santos homered in the third to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.  It stayed there until the sixth, when Blankenhorn hit a three-run homer.  The Twins added two in the seventh to go up 5-1 and they needed all of those runs, as Bristol came back to score three in the bottom of the seventh.  George had a two-run double and Edgar Figueroa provided an RBI single to make it 5-4.  The Pirates loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but a strikeout and a ground out ended the game.

The game:  Cavaness singled in a run and Schmit tripled home another to give the Twins a 3-2 lead in the top of the second.  In the bottom of the second, however, Whitley hit a three-run homer in a four-run frame that put the Rays up 6-3.  It was still 6-3 through six, but the Rays got two in the seventh and two in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Luis Arraez was 1-for-4.  Roberto Gonzalez was 1-for-4.  Jose Martinez pitched five innings, giving up six runs on nine hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
