SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 11, ROCHESTER 5 IN SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE
Batting stars: Xavier Avery was 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring twice. Eric Fryer was 3-for-4 with a triple and a run. Danny Santana was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Pitching stars: None.
Opposition stars: Aaron Judge was 3-for-3 with a home run (his eighth) and a double, scoring three times. Austin Romine was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two. Gregorio Petit was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs.
The game: It was tied 3-3 after five innings, but the RailRiders took control after that. Rob Refsnyder had a two-run single to cap a four-run sixth that made it 7-3. Each team scored once in the seventh. Gary Sanchez then hit a three-run homer in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Of note: James Beresford was 1-for-3 with two walks. Kennys Vargas was 0-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. Josmil Pinto, back with Rochester after a rehab assignment, was 0-for-4. Oswaldo Arcia was 1-for-4 with a home run, his eleventh. Michael Bowden struck out six in five innings but gave up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits and two walks.
PENSACOLA 10, CHATTANOOGA 6 IN PENSACOLA
Batting stars: Stephen Wickens was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two. Stuart Turner was 1-for-1 with three walks and a run. Travis Harrison was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.
Pitching stars: None.
Opposition stars: Zach Vincej was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fourth) and a walk, scoring three times. Phillip Ervin was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Marquez Smith was 1-for-3 with a home run (his eighth) and a walk, scoring twice.
The game: Max Kepler's RBI double capped a three-run third that put the Lookouts ahead 3-1. The Blue Wahoos scored once in the third and once in the fifth to tie it 3-3. It was tied 5-5 going to the bottom of the seventh, but Pensacola took over from there. Jesse Winker's two-run single made it 7-5. Harrison tripled and scored in the eighth to cut it to 7-6, but Alex Blandino had a two-run single in a three-run bottom of the eighth that put the game out of reach.
Of note: Jorge Polanco was 0-for-3 with two walks and an RBI. Max Kepler was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, driving in one. Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-5 with an RBI. Jason Wheeler struck out five in 5.1 innings but gave up five runs on six hits and two walks.
BRADENTON 5, FORT MYERS 0 IN BRADENTON
Batting stars: Mitch Garver was 1-for-3 with a walk. Jason Kanzler was 1-for-3 with a triple.
Pitching star: Tyler Jay pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.
Opposition stars: Harold Ramirez was 3-for-4 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in one. Chris Diaz was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Tyler Eppler pitched seven shutout innings, allowing four hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
The game: Ramirez singled in one in the first, Diaz doubled in two in the second, and a sacrifice fly scored one in the third to put the Marauders up 4-0. The closest the Miracle came to scoring was the seventh, when Kanzler hit a one-out triple. A strikeout and a line out ended the inning.
Of note: Zach Granite was 1-for-4. Aderlin Mejia was 0-for-3 with a walk. Marcus Knecht was 0-for-4. Mat Batts had a rare bad start, pitching five innings and giving up four runs on seven hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
CEDAR RAPIDS 2, CLINTON 0 IN CLINTON
Batting stars: Brett Doe was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. T. J. White was 2-for-4 with a run. Brian Navaretto was 1-for-3 with a double.
Pitching stars: Sam Gibbons struck out twelve in eight shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks. Michael Theofanopoulos pitched a perfect inning.
Opposition star: Zack Littell pitched eight shutout innings, allowing four hits and no walks with four strikeouts.
The game: Sam Gibbons retired the first seventeen batters before giving up a two-out single in the sixth. That was the LumberKings' only baserunner of the game. The Kernels' offense wasn't much better, though, as Littell retired fifteen in a row at one point. There was no score through eight. The first two Kernels went out in the ninth, but Edgar Corcino singled, White singled, and Doe delivered a double for the only run of the game.
Of note: Sean Miller was 0-for-4. Rafael P. Valera was 1-for-4.
PULASKI 4, ELIZABETHTON 3 IN PULASKI
Batting stars: LaMonte Wade was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one. Daniel Kihle was 2-for-4 with a double. Alex Perez was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.
Pitching star: Anthony Mciver struck out four in three shutout innings, giving up two hits.
Opposition stars: Austin Afenir was 3-for-4 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in one. Kane Sweeney was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Juan Jimenez struck out two in two innings, allowing one hit.
The game: The Yankees got three in the first and one in the third to take an early 4-0 lead. The Twins got two in the fourth and Wade singled in a run in the fifth to cut the lead to 4-3. The Twins twice had the tying run on second base, once with none out, but could not even the score.
Of note: Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-4 with a double and a run. Zander Wiel was 0-for-3. Onesimo Hernandez struck out six in five innings, giving up four runs on nine hits and a walk.
GCL RED SOX 8, GCL TWINS 3 AT TWINS
Batting stars: Luis Arraez was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one. Bryant Hayman was 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring once. Jorge Andrade was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.
Pitching stars: Jovani Moran struck out four in four shutout innings, giving up one hit and two walks. Max Cordy pitched two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeout.
Opposition stars: Andy Perez was 2-for-2 with three walks, scoring once and driving in two. Roldani Baldwin was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one. Gerson Bautista struck out four in four shutout innings, allowing one hit and three walks.
The game: It was close almost all the way. Rafael Oliveras singled in a run for the Red Sox in the fifth, but the Twins took a 2-1 lead in the sixth, getting two runs on just one hit. The Red Sox went back in front in the eighth, scoring twice to go up 3-2. In the ninth, the Red Sox used two walks and five singles to score five times and put the game out of reach.
Of note: Ariel Montesino was 0-for-4 with a walk. Roberto Gonzalez was 0-for-4.
DSL TWINS 6, DSL ROJOS 1 AT ROJOS
Batting stars: Oliver Tejeda was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs. Yeltsin Encarnacion was 1-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs. Darling Cuesto was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.
Pitching stars: Huascar Ynoa struck out five in five innings, giving up an unearned run on four hits and two walks. Erick Balbuena pitched two perfect innings. Carlos Suniaga pitched two perfect innings.
Opposition stars: Hidekel Abreu was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run. Carlos Mateo was 1-for-1 with a walk and a run. Pedro Acevedo pitched two shutout innings, allowing a walk.
The game: RBI singles by Antonio Tovar and Cuesto keyed a four-run third inning that put the Twins in control early. The lone Rojos run came on a run-scoring single by Aristedes Sanchez. A pair of errors led to two more Twins runs in the seventh.
Of note: Gorge Munoz was 1-for-5 with a double and a run. Tovar was 1-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Jorge Parra was 1-for-5.
