Minor Details: Games of August 25

Not much offense for the Red Wings.  Shannon Wilkerson leads the Lookouts to victory.  Good days for Logan Wade and Edgar Corcino.  An eight-run inning does in the E-Twins.  Walks and hit batsmen aid the GCL Twins' cause.

SYRACUSE 4, ROCHESTER 1 IN SYRACUSE

Batting stars:  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Eric Fryer was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Alex Meyer struck out three in two innings, giving up no hits and no walks.  Aaron Thompson struck out two in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Scott Sizemore was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Rick Hague was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.  A. J. Cole struck out seven in 6.2 innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits and a walk.

The game:  Ex-Twin Darin Mastroianni singled in a run in the third to put the Chiefs up 1-0.  The Chiefs added three in the fourth to go up 4-0 and take control of the game.  Fryer singled home a run in the seventh for the lone Red Wings tally.  They did bring the tying run up to bat with two out in the ninth.

Of note:  Danny Santana was 0-for-4.  James Beresford was 0-for-4.  Xavier Avery was 1-for-3.  Josmil Pinto was 1-for-4.  Oswaldo Arcia was 0-for-3.  Pat Dean pitched five innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

CHATTANOOGA 4, TENNESSEE 3 IN CHATTANOOGA

Batting stars:  Shannon Wilkerson was 2-for-3 with a triple, scoring once and driving in two.  Stuart Turner was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs.  Heiker Meneses was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.

Pitching starsBrett Lee pitched six innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits and a walk with three strikeouts.  Alex Wimmers pitched three shutout innings, giving up three hits with two strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Albert Almora was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Jonathan Mota was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Felix Pena pitched six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

The game:  Each team scored twice in the third.  Almora singled in a run in the fifth to put the Smokies up 3-2.  In the seventh, Wilkerson tripled in the tying run and later scored on an error to give the Lookouts a 4-3 lead.  The Smokies did not get a man past first after that.

Of note:  Levi Michael was 1-for-4.  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Max Kepler was 0-for-4.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-4.  D. J. Hicks was 1-for-3 with a walk.

JUPITER 4, FORT MYERS 2 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Logan Wade was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Jason Kanzler was 1-for-4 with a home run (his eighth).  Aderlin Mejia was 0-for-2 with two walks and a run.

Pitching stars:  Luke Westphal pitched six innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks with two strikeouts.  Jake Reed pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Austin Dean was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in two.  Blake Barber was 3-for-4 with a run.  Chris Hoo was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run.

The game:  Wade doubled in a run in the second to give the Miracle a 1-0 lead.  It lasted until the fifth, when Dean's two-run double capped a three-run inning that put the Hammerheads up 3-1.  The Miracle cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth on Kanzler's homer, but never seriously threatened after that.  The Hammerheads added an insurance run in the eighth.

Of note:  Engelb Vielma was 0-for-4.  Mitch Garver was 1-for-2 with a double.  Marcus Knecht was 0-for-4.

PEORIA 7, CEDAR RAPIDS 4 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Edgar Corcino was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.  T. J. White was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.  Max Murphy was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Pitching star:  John Curtiss pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Nick Thompson was 5-for-5 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in one.  Darren Seferini was 4-for-5 with a triple and an RBI.  Kenny Peoples-Walls was 2-for-4 with a run and three RBIs.

The game:  Two errors and a balk contributed to a four-run fourth for the Chiefs, putting them up 4-0.  Corcino led off the bottom  of the fourth with a double and scored on two ground outs to cut it to 4-1, but the Kernels would never get closer.  Each team scored once in the seventh and twice in the eighth.

Of note:  Sean Miller was 1-for-5.  Nick Gordon was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Felix Jorge pitched six innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on ten hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

GREENEVILLE 8, ELIZABETHTON 4 IN GREENEVILLE

Batting stars:  Manuel Guzman was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Lewin Diaz was 1-for-4 with a home run, his second.  Nelson Molina was 2-for-4 with a run.

Pitching stars:  C. K. Irby struck out five in 3.1 innings, giving up one run on one hit and one walk.  Jose Abreu pitched three shutout innings, giving up only a walk.

Opposition stars:  Connor Goedert was 1-for-3 with a three-run homer (his fifth) and a walk.  Rodrigo Ayarza was 1-for-2 with a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Andrew Thome pitched four shutout innings, allowing four hits with one strikeout.

The game:  The Astros scored all eight of their runs in the second inning, turning a 1-0 deficit into an 8-1 lead.  Ayarza had a three-run double and Goedert a three-run homer.  The Twins came back with three in the third but did not do much after that.

Of note:  Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-5 with a run.  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Zander Wiel was 0-for-4.  Cody Stashak had his first bad outing, pitching 1.2 innings and givine up seven runs on six hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

GCL TWINS 4, GCL RAYS 2 AT TWINS (7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Aaron Whitefield was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run.  Roberton Gonzalez was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run.  Luis Arraez was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Jose Martinez struck out four in four innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and no walks.  Max Cordy struck out four in three shutout innings, giving up a hit and two walks.

Opposition stars:  Garrett Whitley was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Oscar Rojas was 1-for-3 with a run.  Ernesto Frieri struck out two in two shutout innings, allowing one hit.

The game:  The Twins scored two in the third to take a 3-1 lead.  They got only one hit in the inning, benefiting from two walks and two hit batsmen.  Each team scored once in the fourth to make it 4-2.  The Rays moved the tying run into scoring position with two out in the sixth.

Of note:  Christian Cavaness was 1-for-4 with a run.  Robert Molina was 1-for-4 with a run.  Bryan Haar was 1-for-3 with a walk.  The reason this game went seven innings is that the game included in the August 24 recaps was actually suspended and completed on August 25 before this game was played.
