ROCHESTER 6, SYRACUSE 0 IN ROCHESTER
Batting stars: Josmil Pinto was 1-for-4 with a grand slam, his seventh homer. Danny Santana was 2-for-4 with a double and a run. James Beresford was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Pitching stars: Michael Bowden struck out nine in seven shutout innings, giving up five hits and no walks. Mark Hamburger struck our four in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars: Bruce Billings struck out five in 4.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits. Matt Skole was 2-for-4 with a double. Dan Butler was 1-for-3 with a double.
The game: All the runs scored in the first inning. Kennys Vargas singled in one, Pinto hit a grand slam, and Eric Fryer hit a solo homer. The Chiefs did not get a hit until the fourth and did not get a man past second base.
Of note: Xavier Avery was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run. Vargas was 2-for-4 with a run. Oswaldo Arcia was 0-for-3.
TENNESSEE 7, CHATTANOOGA 1 IN CHATTANOOGA
Batting stars: Jairo Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with a walk. Travis Harrison was 0-for-2 with two walks and a run. Levi Michael was 2-for-4.
Pitching star: Corey Williams struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.
Opposition stars: Willson Contreras was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two. Taylor Davis was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk, driving in one. Jeffry Antigua pitched six shutout innings, allowing four hits and three walks with two strikeouts.
The game: No big innings, but the Smokies scored one in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth, and two in the sixth to go up 6-0. The lone Lookouts run scored on a double play in the seventh inning.
Of note: Stephen Wickens was 0-for-4. Jorge Polanco was 1-for-4. Max Kepler was 0-for-4. Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-2 with two walks. D. J. Baxendale pitched five innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
FORT MYERS 3, BRADENTON 2 IN FORT MYERS
Batting stars: Tanner Vavra was 2-for-3 with a run. Zach Granite was 2-for-4 with a run. Engelb Vielma was 2-for-4 with a run.
Pitching stars: Ethan Mildren pitched six shutout innings, giving up five hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Jake Reed pitched a perfect inning. Zach Jones struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up two hits.
Opposition stars: Wyatt Mathisen was 2-for-3 with a double and a run. Jordan Steranka was 2-for-4. Frank Duncan struck out six in six innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on nine hits and no walks.
The game: A two-run sacrifice fly-plus-error put the Miracle ahead 2-0 in the third. Another sacrifice fly in the fifth made it 3-0. The Marauders didn't score until the ninth, when they got two runs. They had the tying run on third with one out in the ninth. A fly out made it two down, and Granite threw out the man trying to tag up and score to end the game.
Of note: Aderlin Mejia was 0-for-2 with two RBIs. Mitch Garver was 0-for-4.
KANE COUNTY 5, CEDAR RAPIDS 0 IN CEDAR RAPIDS
Batting stars: Alex Real was 3-for-3 with a double. Rafael P. Valera was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk. Nick Gordon was 2-for-5.
Pitching stars: Randy Rosario pitched six innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Zach Tillery pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout.
Opposition stars: Joe Munoz was 2-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one. Henry Castillo was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run. Jared Miller pitched five shutout innings, giving up four hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
The game: The Cougars got two in the second and one in the third to go ahead 3-0. The Kernels put two men on in innings two through six but could do nothing with them. The Cougars added two runs in the eighth.
Of note: Edgar Corcino was 0-for-4 with a walk. T. J. White was 0-for-4.
KINGSPORT 6, ELIZABETHTON 3 IN ELIZABETHTON
Batting stars: Zander Wiel was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Jermaine Palacios was 2-for-4 with a double and a run. A. J. Murray was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Pitching star: Logan Lombana struck out five in three shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk.
Opposition stars: Luis Ortega was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and two runs. Luis Carpio was 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Gabriel Llanes pitched 7.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk with six strikeouts.
The game: Ortega hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth to give the Mets a 3-0 lead. It was 3-1 through seven, but Wiel hit a two-out two-run double to tie it 3-3. In the ninth, however, the Mets put together a three-run rally on only two hits to take control of the game.
Of note: Alex Perez was 0-for-4 with a run. LaMonte Wade was 0-for-3 with a run. Eduardo Del Rosario pitched four innings, giving up three runs on six hits and no walks with three strikeouts.
GCL RAYS 7, GCL TWINS 3 AT TWINS
Batting stars: Kolton Kendrick was 1-for-4 with a triple, scoring once and driving in two. Roberto Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with a run.
Pitching stars: Luis Hernandez struck out two in 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up three hits and a walk. Hector Lujan pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars: Jose Disla pitched five perfect innings with two strikeouts. Oscar Rojas was 2-for-3 with two walks and a run. Juan Carlos Arias was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.
The game: The Rays used three singles and a sacrifice fly to score twice in the second inning and take a 2-0 lead. They scored three more in the fifth on only two hits, aided by a walk, an error, and a wild pitch, to go ahead 5-0. The Twins got back in it in the seventh, as Kendrick hit a two-run triple and later scored to cut the margin to 5-3. In the eighth, however, three walks, an error, two wild pitches, and a passed ball resulted in two Rays runs to put the game out of reach.
Of note: Christian Cavaness was 0-for-2. Luis Arraez was 1-for-4 with a run. Bryant Hayman was 0-for-4. Matz Schutte struck out six in 4.2 innings but gave up five runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk.
