Sooooooo close, AMR. I have something, but I just didn't see any good, unobtrusive way to hand it off.
Oh well, I made eye contact, so that probably ruined it.
Mauer has now reached safely in 41 straight games, one shy of the club record.
I went to b-r hoping to find a silver lining on his season, but.... Despite the streak, his slash line for September is still only 243/380/351 and that split translates to a 100 OPS+. π
Well, the nice part is seeing his walk rate increase. That was the most disturbing part of his season was how little he was walking. His K rate is actually down from the past couple seasons. Hopefully, the further he gets from the concussion, the better his numbers will be. Morneau saw a resurgence when he went to Colorado before sustaining another concussion. I doubt we'll ever see pre-concussion Mauer again, but hopefully he can get to being good at reaching base again to give Sano plenty of chances with men on base.
This is deja vu all over again (btw, RIP, Yogi). The 2009 Twins were also 77-73 with 12 games left and were 2.5 games out of the playoffs (AL Central title). They finished their season with 3 home games versus Royals, which they swept to force a one-game playoff against the Tigers. The team went 9-3 to force Game 163. They were actually 3 games back with 4 to play. So like I remember saying back then, at this time of the year, you're never out of it until you're officially eliminated.
Didn't the Twins face Grienke in the first game of that final 2009 series?
Yeah, that Greinke game was epic. Mauer got a two-out, two-strike RBI single to break scoreless tie and then Greinke kind of fell apart. Twins blew the lead and then Cuddyer won it on an 8th-inning HR.
I remember it being a pretty exciting game, a must win against the top starter in the majors at the time.
I was there. Great game
I have 16 votes in for HBH. That's enough. I'll close the ballot this afternoon unless anyone requests for me to keep it open longer.
Day game alert! Not the Twins. The Angels play at Houston at noon Central time today.
Dang. I guess technically rooting for the Angels? If they win though, they're a 1/2 game up on us until we win tonight*, but it brings Houston to within a game.
*Channeling the Padre
Since they lost Monday, they dropped behind the Twins by half a game, so they would essentially be tied with the Twins if they win. The Angels would be ahead by the slightest of margins since they have played less games.
Yeah, I guess I read the standing wrong. Either way, tricky spot for the Twins since it'd be beneficial if they were both losing games late.
When it comes down to it, what REALLY matters is that the Twins win.
MLB.TV is now $3.99 for the rest of the year. If you were on the fence at ten bucks, like I was, might be a good time to reconsider.
I wasn't on the fence, I was just procrastinating since I only want it for next week when I'm traveling. So thank you for saving me 6 bucks and a copper.
How does it know if you're trying to watch an out-of-market game? IP address?
Yes, from your Internet provider.
Though one could use a VPN if one wanted to get around such things.
David Freese with a 2-out, 2-run double in the 8th to put the Angels up 5-4 after the Astros had scored 2 in the 7th to take the lead for the first time.
Angels hold on for 6-5 win. Twins 1.5 games back of Astros, virtual tie with Angels. Rain looming tonight.
Twins control their own destiny once again. If they go 12-0, the worst case is game 163 against Houston.
For the record: I won creepiest dance party watcher NOT creepiest dancer (not sure if that's better or worse). #ToriiAwards

Nope, Lenny DiNardo did. Greinke started the second game. He faced off against Nick Blackburn.
Yeah, that Greinke game was epic. Mauer got a two-out, two-strike RBI single to break scoreless tie and then Greinke kind of fell apart. Twins blew the lead and then Cuddyer won it on an 8th-inning HR.

Never!
RIP Yogi Berra. And . . . a little research into whether he really said all the clever sayings attributed to him.
