Well, I do. I didn't think they'd get there, but the younger guys showed that there's some promise for the future right here in Minnesota, so that's pretty cool, too.
I mentioned this in the game log last night, but thought it was interesting enough to put here, too (I don't have a b-ref subscription, so hopefully my Play Indexing was correct.):
As DW observed in the recap to Game 153, Eddie Rosario currently has more triples than walks. Only 19 players have qualified for the batting title and finished the season with more triples than walks. Of that cadre, Pirates right fielder Chief Wilson hit the most three-baggers: an astounding 36 triples in 1912. He walked 35 times that season.
The only player to achieve this feat in the modern era is Garry Templeton, who is also the only player to do it twice. Templeton finished 1977 with 18 triples & 17 walks, and 1979 with 19 triples & 18 walks.
So in a couple years we can trade him for the next Ozzie Smith!
oh, nice!
I had forgotten that the it was an aging Templeton whom the Padres traded to the Mets for Tim Teufel.
The Padres turning Ozzie Smith into Tim Teufel? That's out-of-the-box thinking by a front office!
Looking further, it looks like only 15 players (14 if you count Templeton as just one player) have managed more triples than walks in 450+ PA. So Rosario's already in pretty special company even if he doesn't qualify for the batting title, which I'm guessing he won't at this point.
I saw this comment last night - glad you brought it over here too.
I'm sorta torn - I really like the pop in his bat and his aggressiveness at the plate. In addition, the announcers & media keep recounting that the coaches are impressed with his skill set and ability to make in-game adjustments.
On the other hand, developing his plate discipline would be cool too.
I fully expect him to Danny Santana* next year. What Rosario is doing is completely unsustainable.
*Yes, I'm using that as a verb.
If he does, it'll be different. Santana had a BABIP of .405 last year; Rosario's BABIP this year is .338. Have to see what the projections think of his BABIP and ISO for next year but his drop should be closer to, oh, half a Danny Santana.
I agree that Rosario's lack of walks is a concern. Still, he's done enough this year to deserve a chance to sustain it. And I like his chances of being in the majors two years from now better than I like Torii Hunter's chances.
Whoa - way to go out on a limb there Padre.
I know, but there's a point to it. If Hunter comes back and Rosario slumps early in the season, I could easily see the Twins shaking their heads sadly, deciding that Rosario needed to go back to AAA "for more seasoning", and putting Hunter out there in his place.
sigh
yeah ... I was just thinking about how much rope they gave to Santana & Hicks, though I guess that has to be tempered with how little rope they gave to Arcia & Vargas
Rosario has shown a bit of laziness, at least in spring training -- hopefully he's outgrown this.
Can a truly lazy player hit 15 triples?
Yes, actually, he can. He can also jog to first on a groundball. I'm just repeating what had been said (and what I saw) regarding spring training; this isn't the ballplayer that I saw in March.
Hey gang, I'm in a new Out of the Park historical baseball league and we're looking for one more owner. Here's the deal on this league:
We're using OOTP 16. We're starting in 1901. All players were made free agents and every team has the exact same payroll cap for this first year. Budgets will increase going forward especially based on how well you do. We're seven days into a bidding free for all for the free agents. A few low-level players have signed, but Christy Mathewson, Nap Lajoie, et al. are causing crazy bidding wars. Thus, you haven't really missed anything if you join now to take over the Cardinals (the original owner backed out at the last minute).
Let me know if you have any questions or are interested. It's with a great group of guys (the other owners came from my other historic league that bjhess and TDO are also in).
Groan
But really, what presidential hopeful is ever 100%?
You know what would be worse than the Twins missing the second Wild Card? The Angels getting it instead.
I'm going to Saturday's game with the jalapeno, and I just found out the game time is being changed from 6:10 p.m. to 12:05 p.m. "to accommodate the FOX national broadcast schedule." Is this weird or is it a thing that happens from time to time?
It means the game is suddenly relevant.
But don't they know the fire department open house is also Saturday afternoon?!?! (Please, no one tell him he's not going to be able to go to see the fire trucks this year.)
Am I the only one thinking of the obvious solution for how he could see fire trucks? Maybe even get them to come to his house...?
I pulled the fire alarm in Pa's band room at Thief River Falls HS when I was four. That day was was the day I learned not all cities buy red fire trucks.
Wow!
And Philo, he did already find one way to summon them earlier this year.
My parents were going to come along, but my mom has something else going on Saturday afternoon. So . . . is anyone interested in joining me, the jalapeño, and my dad in section S on Saturday? We have one extra ticket.
Angels are 2 games back of the Rangers and finish the season with four games against the Rangers. If they go into the series Thursday 1 or 3 games back, they cannot tie since the Angels can only gain 4 games in a sweep or 2 games when winning 3 of 4, so if we want a big tie scenario, we need the Angels to be 2 games back (or even 4 games) after Wednesday's games. Otherwise, the best we could have would be a three-way tie.
Btw, Astros trailing 2-1 to M's and it's the Free Game of the Day on MLB.tv.
Cano homer ties it at 4 in the 6th. LAas whomping the As in the 7th.
Neshek burned by a missed (?) strike 3 call to end the inning, gives up 2 run double. 6-4.
Astros lose, Angels win. Angels now in wildcard position, 1 1/2 games ahead of the Twins and Astros 1 game ahead of the Twins. Sound familiar? If Twins sweep tomorrow, they could be tied with Angels.
I remembered to start Kershaw today at least.
A few years ago, if you'd told me I'd ever be watching the Houston Astros play in the final week of the season and hoping they'd lose, I'd have called you a liar.
Looks like they're losing, though. So it was all worth it.
Aw, sad to see that The Log Lady passed away died yesterday.
I saw that on the Book of Face last night.
Who gives a shit if the Twins get the 81st win of the season, anyways?
