  1. I watched a bit of the Lakers/Clippers game last night on NBATV. Cole Aldrich appears to have turned himself into a useful NBA player. Probably not actual starter material on a good team, but somebody who can contribute.

also, is it just me, or is Oklahoma City's Enes Kanter rocking the Freddie Mercury look these days?

  2. John Gordon and i-i are the newest inductees to the Twins Hall of Fame:

After going two straight years without any new additions to the Twins Hall of Fame, a pair of popular inductees moved to the head of the class for the July 15-17 induction weekend at Target Field.
    ...
Typically, there is a two-year waiting period before players may be considered for the Twins hall, but that stipulation was waived for Hunter.

“The Torii Hunter Rule,” Twins president Dave St. Peter called it. “It really was a no-brainer.”

They elected to not induct Chuck Knoblauch in 2014 after his domestic abuse arrest. It's nice to know where the line of personal conduct is for the team leadership.

            1. The last report I saw said he'd be in spring training as an instructor, but that was all for this year. The article said the Twins tried hard to get him to commit to something, but that Hunter wanted to take the year off.

    1. Nice to see Gordo get the nod.

"Waay baack! Waay baack! It's a.... carom off the center field wall."

Hallsey and Herb, all sparkly like Jedi knights, welcoming him into the THOF.

      1. As opposed to Dick:

"Waay baack! Waay baack! It's a.... carom off the center field wall ... caught in short left field."

  3. IWP (Impromptu WGOM Poll):

    Winter Sport: I am a 1) downhill skier-traditional, 2) X-country, 3) snowboarder, 4) other-specify, 5) nein/nada/ничего.

    1. Where is the "surviving walking on icy sidewalks because people cant be bother to shovel nuisance snows" option?

      I suppose #4

    2. 1), at least as of the past couple years. In fact, we hit the slopes today. I evidently needed to move somewhere without a real winter before I would take up a winter sport.

This is really far more of a thing for my wife than for me, but I've started looking forward to going, rather than just going because she wanted to.

    3. 5, unless being a winter baseball parent comes under 4. Junior high plays during the winter here. Junior just finished up his final season but Trey will be starting next season, so we'll have 3 more winters busy with baseball, making it 6 in a row total.

    4. 3) snowboarder
      4) ice fisherman (it's a "sport" in that I own a manual auger and no snowmobile or atv, so I generally haul a sled with my gear)

  4. Terry Ryan was asked about Joe Mauer returning to catcher

  5. So, just back from a thrilling, 90 minute (and 40 mile) waste of time.

The Mrs. decided that we were going to get our passport applications in today. So, we filled out the form (available on-line) and got passport photos (at Costco) and brought our documentation to the Davisville post office (where we'd previously obtained passports for both kids, including one for the Girl less than a year ago). Well, they no longer process passports, despite the fact that the effing State department's search function indicates that they still do. You gotta go on to the West Sac post office, open 7 days per week for this purpose. We get there, and, of course, there is a backlog of folks waiting. Talk to the Man: "I am going on my break soon and won't be able to get to you. You will have to return at 3:30. No, you cannot make an appointment, and no, you cannot get on my waiting list. You have to come back at 3:30 and I will put you on the list then."

Seriously? What century are we in?

In this state, the DMV has an online mechanism for making appointments, not to mention most renewals can be done online entirely. The DMV is actually a (positive) model of government efficiency. But passports? Well, F&)*#*& you, member of the public. We are monopoly suppliers and don't give a sh!t about customer service.

It's almost as if they want to keep Americans from traveling overseas. How hard is it to establish a mechanism for making appointments? Surely in the $110 fee for the passport and the $25 fee for "processing" there is enough revenue to create and maintain a mechanism to serve members of the public. Oy.

    1. hilariously, the USPS website states that this particular location (in West Sac) requires an appointment for a passport application, But when I called to clarify, they told me that they no longer take appointments. Progress!

        1. Ixnay!

I've never been, but there is a possibility that we will be traveling to France this summer to visit the Coneheads attend a b-i-l's wedding. Also, the Girl is hoping to spend the summer in #therealsaintpetersburg and the Mrs thinks we should have passports "just in case".

  6. This summer I won the right to buy Masters tickets for the Monday practice round. This is one of my dad's bucket list items, so a no brainer.

Four tickets, two of us, so the plan was to sell two of the tickets, buy Tuesday tickets, spend two days there. I've bought the Tuesday tickets and just need to sell a couple Monday tickets yet.

But…unfortunately I accidentally bought, to the tune of $800, Tuesday _1/2 day PM_ tickets. I guess when I was shopping I didn't even consider that people are selling tickets that require other people to leave the event, return their badges, and then the badges get shuttled to a different set of people. Whoops. Gonna have to think about this one.
