2016 Game #12: LA Heavenly Host at Minnesota Gemini

1:10 PM CDT

Kyle Gibson 0-2, 4.22 ERA
Nick Tropeano 1-0, 0.00 ERA

Things to be worried about today:
• The Twins rank last in the American League in runs scored, home runs, and slugging percentage.
• The Twins rank second to last in the American League in batting average, OPS, and total bases.
• The Twins rank third to last in the American League in hits and on base percentage.
• Death and taxes.

Things to be happy about today:
• Two in a row is officially a winning streak.
• The Twins have a chance to sweep the Angels.
• Byung Ho Park hits really, really long [redacted] home runs.
• Joe Mauer is playing like Joe Mauer again. With a stick.

Let’s play ball, Dude.

  1. There had never been an "Escobar" in the majors until 1988. Through 2000 there had been only three. Now it seems like every team has one.

    1. Of others with that moniker, the most famous is Pablo, the Medellin Columbian drug lord, famous for bringing the vast bulk of the cocaine smuggled into the U.S.

Also affectionately known as El Padrino (The Godfather), El Patron (The Boss), El Senor (the Lord), El Magico (The Magician), El Pablito (little Pablo), and El Zar de la Cocaina (The Tsar of Cocaine).

  2. Not bad:

Chemmen Manga Curry A Keralan dish (shrimp mango curry).

Heat oil in a saucepan. Add mustard seeds, once they pop add onions, green chili, ginger, and curry leaves. Cook until onions are brown. Add chili powder and turmeric. Add some water then shrimp and mangoes (I used frozen mangoes as the market was iffy), then after a while add some coconut milk. Toasted some dessicated coconut under the broiler for final touch. Serve over basmati rice.

    1. I think you've shared this recipe before. It deserves a full post, with pics, preferably. Sounds delish.

    1. He opined that catchers tend to call the out pitch that they tend to have trouble hitting themselves, so he studies other catchers' hitting weaknesses for when he's in a hole in the count. I wonder if that's true; either way, fun insight.

  3. Why does mlb.com cut out local commercials when I listen to a game live, but leave them in when the game is archived?

      1. I assume so, but a lot of times they cut the local commercials for "classic moments from the mlb vault". Maybe local advertisers have to pay more to be on the internet, and if they don't their commercials get cut regardless of whether there are other commercials to play?

  4. this is, I think, the first game I've listened to all year. Do I take credit for Mauer's single or blame for Nunez getting caught at the plate?

  5. can we play the Angels about 100 more times this year? the Twins might make the playoffs then.

  6. I was going to say that, in this situation, I approve of the bunt if Murphy is a capable bunter. I'm not sure how capable he is, but he got the job done here.

        1. Me, too. Plus, if you use Escobar and he doesn't end the game, you have Kepler in center and only Suzuki left on the bench.

  7. It would be really good to shut the door here and walk off in the bottom. Trout on deck, Poo-holes in the hole.

  8. If Buxton steals second, we'll be just as well off as if the bunt had succeeded, plus we'll have a faster runner at second.

    1. If Buxton punches one up the line over Cron's head, Mauer might have scored on the play.

              1. Correct, I won't (or more correctly still, I can't). I tried a handful of months ago at home with my wife and daughters, with them supporting me all the way, and even trying to ease into it I broke down completely. This one doesn't seem to be coming back.

  9. ARCIA!!!!

    SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!

    1. When it's one of the fastest men in the game who also is a plus plus defender I'm more in favor of it.

      1. I'm not much of a fan of pinch-runners, but I was okay with it there. Down a run in the eighth, low-scoring game, five and six hitters coming up, I can see why Molitor might think he had to do everything he could to try to get the tying run home at that point. Plus, as Beau says, it helps when your pinch-runner is actually fast, rather than just a marginal improvement over the runner you already had.

What happened in the ninth, of course, shows one of the reasons I don't normally like pinch-runners. The use of Buxton not only took Sano out of the lineup, it effectively took the bat out of Mauer's hands as well. Still, in that situation, I was okay with it.

        1. From the radio it sounded like Buxton at least made some nice contact on that ground out too? He'll get there. Of course, then he won't be pinch running.

  10. so, sure, it figures that the winning play would happen right after I left for the store.

  11. Wait, I'm laid up for three days and miss every single pitch of the Twins only victories of the year. I'll stay away if it means the local 9 win....

  12. I watched about the 5th-12th innings of this game (after I remembered it was Sunday and it was a day game). My best friend, his wife and I cheered like it was game seven.

    Every series is a sweep!
