A shutout for Logan Darnell. A big comeback for Cedar Rapids.
ROCHESTER 4, BUFFALO 0 IN BUFFALO
As first reported by socaltwinsfan, Logan Darnell pitched a complete game shutout, giving up four hits and four walks with no strikeouts and throwing 105 pitches. The Red Wings did not have a big inning, but put up single runs in the second, sixth, eighth, and ninth. Byron Buxton was 2-for-5 with a triple and a double. Wilfredo Tovar was 2-for-3 with a walk and raised his average to .313. James Beresford was 0-for-4, lowering his average to .299. Stephen Wickens was 1-for-4 with a home run.
MONTGOMERY 6, CHATTANOOGA 1 IN CHATTANOOGA
The first four Biscuits went single, double, single, triple. They had four runs before the first inning was over and the game was essentially decided at that point. Starter D. J. Baxendale settled down after the first, giving up five runs on five hits and four walks with five strikeouts in six innings. Former Twins prospect Chih-Wei Hu started for Montgomery, allowing one run on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts in five innings. Daniel Palka was 2-for-2 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch, raising his average to .356. His line is .356/.434/.575, giving him an OPS of 1.009 in 73 at-bats.
JUPITER 12, FORT MYERS 3 IN JUPITER
The Hammerheads scored in each of the first three innings to take a 5-0 lead and were never threatened. It was a tough outing for Tyler Jay, who lasted only 4.1 innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on ten hits and no walks with no strikeouts. Nick Gordon was 2-for-4 with a triple to raise his average to .342. Alex Real was 2-for-3.
Note: I listened to much of this game on the Jupiter broadcast. The announcers did the game in what could charitably be called a relaxed tone, never really seeming to get excited about anything. Also, there was almost no crowd noise. It struck me that if NPR ever started broadcasting sports, this is probably what it would sound like.
CEDAR RAPIDS 7, WEST MICHIGAN 6 IN CEDAR RAPIDS
The Kernels trailed 6-1 after three. A four-run fourth got them back into the game. It was still 6-5 going to the bottom of the ninth. A single, an error, and a walk loaded the bases with one out, J. J. Fernandez singled in the tying run, and a wild pitch brought home Sean Miller with the winning run. Sam Gibbons did okay other than the one bad inning, but his line was five innings, six runs (five earned), five hits, five walks, and one strikeout. Logan Lombana struck out four in three shutout innings. Fernandez was 3-for-5. Luis Arraez was 0-for-3 with a walk, dropping his average to .366. LaMonte Wade, who's been dealing with a hamstring issue, did not start but came into the game in the third due to an injury to Daniel Kihle. He went 1-for-2 to raise his average to .348.

that is really hard to accomplish. #pitchtocontact
Yes, it is. Prior to this year, Darnell had struck out a decent number of batters. For his minor league career he has struck out 6.3 batters per nine innings and last year in Rochester he struck out 7.6. This past winter, though, he struck out only 4.9 in Venezuela and so far this season in Rochester he's at 2.4. Yes, small sample sizes, but it makes me think he's doing something differently.
