Jacob Wetterling. Wow.
He was taken about a week before my wedding. Which is of interest to no one but Mrs. A and me, I realize, but it's something I'll always remember.
I suspect most of us in the area will always remember. Many of us 'round here are pretty similar ages, and, for me at least, that really resonated with me. I very much still held out hope, even though reality pressed against it.
I hadn't thought of him for years, but it all immediately came back. The current suspect was interviewed shortly after Jacob disappeared; I can't even imagine what must be going through his family's minds.
Derrick Rose. Wow.
Sam Bradford. Wow.
Not that he's a superstar or anything, but he's a better quarterback than I thought the Vikings would get.
that's a pretty steep price though.
Welp, I ended up with a new Focus. They had a sweeeeeet 2014 Fiesta that was loaded, but I couldn't convince my wife to let me get it when the Focus was also an option due to interior room.
Were you able to score a manual?
I assume the difference in interior space was more substantial than the difference in price. Too bad; I assume 75% of the time it'll just be you in the car. I haven't sat in a new Fiesta, but I can't imagine it's that much smaller than the VW.
I most certainly did. The manual was something I just can't forgo, it improves my driving experience far too much.
I think the leg room in the Fiesta is very close to what the Golf was, which is not a lot in the back. I pushed pretty hard on the fact that this is mainly for me to commute to work, and I'll probably always be a little regretful that I didn't get the Fiesta because I loved the way it drove. But, the Focus is quite nice as well, and it has 13000 fewer miles.
I did also test drive a Kia Soul as well, which was nearly the same price as the Focus, although without any 0% financing option. I did really like that as well, but the EPA rating is barely 30 mpg. I bet I can push 40 with what I got.
Of course, I also flippin scratched the hood already. I went to look under there to get a feel for where everything, but didn't put my key back in my pocket when i went to pop it. Accidently scraped it with the key for about two inches.
The first time I scratched our Subaru I was really miffed. The second & third times, too. Now I see a new scratch, usually of unknown provenance, and I just sigh.
Mostly I'm just dreading the upcoming water pump & head gaskets replacement.
Considering what you've grown accustomed to, even 40mpg is probably gonna be an adjustment. I'm glad you'll have new wheels for the winter. Think you'll do snow tires?
I suppose having a little more room as the kiddos grow will be nice, even if the other vehicle is the family ride. (You ditched the Pacifica, right?) Seems like kids are supposed to be in boosters until they're in Driver's Ed now.
I had snow tires when I first got the golf and they definitely made a difference. That said, I've driven sixteen some winters now on all seasons so I'm just going to stick with those because I know how to deal with it.
We got rid of the Pacifica last summer, replacing it with a 2016 Kia Sorento (20 year /200,000 mile power train!), which we love. At the time, I thought I was going to have to keep that Golf running for another six years, and to be perfectly honest, I'll be a little sad that I don't get to try. It's been a point of pride that I've been able to keep that thing running as long as I have doing most of the work myself.
When we were looking at electric cars, we didn't even test drive the Nissan Leaf, which is the most popular all-electric car, because it had 3 inches less leg room in the back than our Mazda3, which has just enough leg room for Junior (who is 14). We eventually got the e-Golf, which has pretty much identical leg room to our Mazda3.
If the Leaf is as crappy as the Versa, then you made the right choice.
I would have loved a Mazda3, beautiful cars they are. I couldn't find any incentives that would have brought the payments down enough though.
Yeah, we really like the Mazda3. It does go "zoom, zoom."
Evidently Oklahoma had a 5.6 earthquake today that was felt in Omerha. We totally missed it, even the dogs slept through it.
I just figured it was the aftershock of Houston running a missed figgie back 109 yards for a touchdown to beat the Sooners.
They actually felt it in Houston. And Iowa, I heard
Hey AMR, how about them apples 'shrooms??
Looks like "Chicken of the Woods", Laetiporus sulphureus or L. cincinnatus. A very good eat, though a few people get sick from them (true for just about any mushroom species, think about how some people have lactose intolerance).
The color looks right for L. cincinnatus, but they mostly grow on the ground right next to trees. L. sulphureus is yellower. It could be an old specimen of that, but the thickness of the bottom fans looks very fresh.
Do you have any more pictures?
Sorry, I was away from the computer for most of the weekend, and by now the mushroom may be too old.
When in doubt, you can always collect and refrigerate while looking for an ID.
This wasn't my find -- I was at a friend's nursery and while we were talking he searched out this stump where he had previously harvested Chicken of the Woods and was very pleased with this new batch. It was most certainly harvested and frozen.
