FMD: Musical Hell Is…

... having the wrong song stuck in your head.

Yesterday was a rough day for me. Part of that was I had two different, awful, songs stuck in my head. The first was the Thomas & Friends theme. If you don't know it... you're lucky. It goes in a class with Lamb Chop's theme and Barney's song. ::shudder:: I assume the selection was commissioned by the CIA for the purpose of "data extraction."

The other one was "It's Raining Men." Unlike the Thomas theme, I can acknowledge that "It's Raining Men" is legitimately a song, and that there is a time and a place for it. I only take umbrage with that time and place being "constantly" and "in my head."

So let's talk pain. What are the worst songs to get stuck in your head? Worst times and places? That sort of thing. Random 10's also welcome!

  1. The worst song that constantly gets stuck in my head is Raffi's "Bananaphone"

"Everybody Wants to Rule the World" Tears for Fears
    "Road to Nowhere" Talking Heads
    "Rebels" Tom Petty
"How Soon Is Now?" The Smiths

    "Maybe Im Amazed" Faces

    1. Because another dance parent called me, since she'd heard that was going to be the song our sons were dancing to at their recital.

      Yeah.

      Thankfully, she was wrong.

  2. It will surprise noöne that I consider a certain Paul McCartney song of Yuletide to be so horrendous an earworm that I cannot even think the name for fear of getting it stuck.

My first year deer hunting (1991, following the Halloween Blizzard), I got the song "Lola" stuck in my head because it was on the 93.1 KXLP radio on my dad's pickup as we drove out there around 5am.
I didn't know many of the words, still don't. I still get it creeping into my head out on the stand.

  3. Thankfully of late I don't have annoying songs in my head, but I have a couple currently stuck there for other reasons. I was fascinated by the high harmonies on James Taylor's Native Son (second verse). Also, a couple mixed meter songs by Sting: Seven Days which is in 5/4, and Love is Stronger than Justice (Magnificent Seven) which is in 7/4 and then a sappy country 4/4 on the chorus that is a hilarious transition.

  4. 1. Sarah Davachi “Ghosts And All”* Vergers
    2. Hello Saferide “Last Night Bus”* The Fox, The Hunter, and Hello Saferide
    3. Sylvan Esso* “Come Down” Sylvan Esso
    4. The Breeders “Mad Lucas” Last Splash
    5. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy “Stable Will” Pond Scum

    6. Ha Ha Tonka* “Synthetic Love” Lessons
    7. Fishbone “Alcoholic” Chim Chim's Badass Revenge*

    T. Steve Reich & Musicians “Section VI” Music for 18 Musicians*
    E. Roman Flügel “Dust” All the Right Noises

    *Notes:
    1. 9-minute ambient piece, one of three on the 40-minute album. A contender for my Best of 2016 list (though maybe I got to the album too late). Like some sort of natural synthesis of Steve Reich's "Music for 18" and Ryoji Ikeda's "Matrix (for Rooms)".

    2. "They were real nice to me. They put on some neo-Nazi music; Said, 'It's pretty good, this neo-Nazi music.' And I hummed along."

    3, 6. 2017 Albums coming.

    7. Produced by R&B/Pop producer Dallas Austin (who is not from Texas). When Columbia cut them, Austin signed them to his "Rowdy" label and produced their album, the one really huge outlier in his whole career, and actually their least-slick album to that point. It did feature a verse from Busta Rhymes.

    T. The Nonesuch version (1998).

  5. 1. “Still Alive” - Jonathon Coulton
    2. “Loser” - Beck
    3. “Let It Be Me” - Ray LaMontagne
    4. “Snow (Hey Oh)” - Red Hot Chili Peppers
    5. “Madness” - Muse
    6. “Creep” - Radiohead
    7. “Just Breathe” - Pearl Jam
    8. “Breathe” - Telepopmusik
    9. “Ain’t Waitin” - Justin Townes Earl
    10. “The Devil’s In The Jukebox” - Ray LaMontagne & The Pariah Dogs
B: “On The Radio” - Regina Spektor

    7 & 8 – Hey, oxygen is important.
9 – Never heard this song before. I think I like it.
