    2. There was a presale for an outdoor Willie Nelson concert in the People's Republic this summer scheduled for today. When I checked this morning, the concert had been cancelled due to a "last minute scheduling conflict." Willie's the one current musician I will absolutely kick myself for not seeing while I have the chance, so this was a major blow.

      1. Willie's the one current musician I will absolutely kick myself for not seeing while I have the chance,

He absolutely occupies the same place for me. There are plenty of artists I'd like to see, but I need to see Willie.

        1. I saw Willie at the Austin City Limits festival in, oh, let's say...2006? He was arrested in his tour bus shortly after. One can guess why.

        2. I saw him at Coachella in 2007. He's not in my wheelhouse music-wise, but I am still very glad to have seen him. Fun times.

  2. I listened to the Back in my Play podcast this morning and it was about favorite console launches. Made me think back to when I got my systems over the years, but only recently have I been in a position to buy on the actual launch day (Wii, Wii U, Xbox One). Turns out I remember a surprising amount of detail. The first games I got for the Genesis have not held up well at all, yikes.

Nintendo (thinking Spring 1987): Mario+Duck Hunt (pack-in), Excitebike

Genesis (Christmas 1990): Altered Beast (pack-in), Pit Fighter

PlayStation (Summer 1996): Ridge Racer, NBA Live 96

    PlayStation 2 (Fall 2001): Gran Turismo 3 (pack-in). Maybe Ace Combat 4?

Xbox 360 (Summer 2006): Rockstar Table Tennis

Wii: Wii Sports (pack-in), Zelda Twilight Princess

Wii U: NintendoLand (pack-in), New Super Mario Bros Wii U. FIFA, Madden, Mass Effect 3 (I worked at EA)

Xbox One: Forza Motorsport 5. Madden, FIFA, Battlefield, Need for Speed (still worked at EA)

I'll be heading out tonight to pick up a Switch and Zelda (holy crap, those reviews!) to add to the list.

    1. I finally (and probably as early as I ever have) came into this generation last week when I bought an Xbone. Pretty happy with it so far, although the only thing I've played is Fallout 4, which I might never finish because building settlements is far more fun than it should be. It came with Gears of War 4 and I bought Shadows of Mordor, which after my first time playing last night I found I'm terrible at it. But yeah, definitely excited for a number of current gen games, especially some that are sequels to previous gen games.

      1. It's a much better (and cheaper) system now than it was at launch. Even though the Wii U crashed and burned, the Xbox One launch is the one I feel worst about - high price, had to buy the worthless Kinect, discounts within months.

If you like anything EA makes, check out their Access program for a cheap way to play a lot of games. Microsoft just announced a similar service (with more games) for $9.99/month that will launch in the next few months.

        1. And that is why I never, ever buy electronics at launch. I got the 1TB version for $299.

I'll check out EA Access. They get a lot of crap (because huge company) but they make some fine games. I'm pumped for Mass Effect: Andromeda.

  3. Uh, doc, I'm in a particularly bad place wrt work and the coc title is making me think I need to go raise sheep on a farm somewhere.

    1. I'm sorry to read this. Even though I can't speak from a place of observed experience in a workplace, you seem like exactly the kind of person I'd bend over backward to retain and keep challenging, rewarding, and developing. I'm going through my own rough patch with doubting others' perceptions of my professional worthiness & artistic merit. Don't doubt for a minute that even somebody who only knows you from years of interaction over the internet can still see a person who is very likable, interesting, and clearly very gifted in multi-faceted dimensions.

      Hang in there, meat.

  4. It's New Furniture Week at the Runner house. We decided to convert our little-used front room into a reading room (Mrs. Runner is a voracious reader*), so we're donating our frou-frou couch/loveseat for a pair of nice chair / ottoman combinations. I've also been picking up 11"x14" artwork for some of the national parks we've been visiting and framing those on the wall, so the room is taking on a friendlier air. Meanwhile, we moved a couch upstairs at the foot of our bed so there is more room to watch the TV up there, and I've upgraded the recliner to a newer La-Z-Boy where I can retreat with the laptop. Now all I have left to do is get my work desk converted to a sit-stand workstation.

*historical romance -- does that count? I jokingly ask for a brown paper bag when I pick up any of her books at the library

  5. Jeff A will be glad to know that Carter Capps' delivery has now officially been formalized as illegal.

    1. I am, but it's still ridiculous that it was ever considered legal in the first place.

  6. The Minnesota United announced their tv/radio schedule today. Good news for sports on network tv as all non-national games will be on My29 (radio on 1500ESPN).

    1. Are My29 games also available streaming on FSN1, by chance? In other words, are local Fox stations affiliated with Fox Sports Networks? (Because I have no idea.)

        1. Yeah, that looks right based on the press release. Dang, if all the games were on FSN, I'd be able to watch.

          1. I think MLS has a deal where you can stream all the games. I want to say its around 50 bucks.

      1. I notice he saved the guy who was running behind him directly into the path of the bat.

  7. My brother just sent me an email from the Robert Mondavi Winery wine club: June 11, Twins at Giants. Pre-game festivities in Triples Alley, watch batting practice from the field, then be escorted across the warning track to Lower Box 103. $150 per person. Hmmmm.

  8. I've got to give some dap to Rich Pitino. After watching his first years at the helm, I didn't think he had this kind of coaching in him. I thought he could probably get to ~.500 but his Gophers are blowing teams out of the gym lately.
