FMD: 69

(hehehe)

We'll be accepting Summer Mix suggestions through the weekend, then we'll be banging it out shortly after that. Please put your candidates in SPOILER form below. Please list up to 3 choices (further choices will be ignored). The first choice is automatically in, and the other 2 choices will be put in a pool to be selected from to fill out the mix.

Feel free to drop some lists too.

    4. Listening to these songs coming through on the shuffle, I've noticed that this album has some lackluster cuts that are really improved by falling between such absolute gems as "4" "To Cure a Weakling Child", "Girl/Boy Song", and "Logon-Rock Witch". [That last one I see is "Logan" on iTunes and everywhere else, but handwritten sure looks like "Logon". I'd think it was a pun on "Logan Rock" in Cornwall. But maybe it's just RDJ's poor handwriting.] "Peek..." falls somewhere in the middle. If there'd be no "4", and this opened the album, it'd be much less interesting.

    5. "Veto! Veto! Veto!" This and "Ohio River Boat Song" were apparently the first two solo songs Will Oldham recorded and shopped to a few labels. Quite an impressive start (if a bit pretentious for lo-fi americana).

        c. Apparently, the Taxonomist Imre Frivaldszky believed the bird's three-syllable coo sounded like a recitation of the Greek number 18, "decaocto" enough to give this bird its specific epithet. Although, wikipedia has it a bit differently:
"In Greek mythology, a servant complained bitterly about pay of just 18 pieces a year, and the gods changed her to a dove that still cries mournfully." (Citing Jobling [Helm, 2010].) Maybe that just means that the Greeks based their myth on the call, and Frivaldszky put the myth and taxonomy together?
