Minor Details: Games of June 17

Zack Granite just keeps on hitting.  The Lookouts overcome a rare bad game by Felix Jorge.  Travis Blankenhorn wins it for the Kernels with a steal of home.  Looks like it's time for Tyler Wells and Estamy Urena to move up.

PAWTUCKET 2, ROCHESTER 1 IN PAWTUCKET (GAME 1--8 INNINGS--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

The Red Wings scored in the fifth to take a 1-0 lead.  The Red Sox tied it in the seventh on a Bryce Brentz RBI double and won it in the eighth when Jantzen Witte hit a two-out walkoff homer.

Yohan Pino pitched a complete game, going 7.2 innings and giving up two runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts.  ByungHo Park was 2-for-2.  Matt Hague was 2-for-3.  Zack Granite was 2-for-4 to raise his batting average to .342.

ROCHESTER 7, PAWTUCKET 5 IN PAWTUCKET (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

The action all came early in this one.  The Red Wings scored two in the first, only to see Bryce Brentz hit a grand slam in the bottom of the first to put the Red Sox up 4-2.  Undaunted, Rochester came back with five in the second.  Engelb Vielma had an RBI double and J. B. Shuck and Tommy Field each hit a two-run homer to give the Red Wings a 7-4 lead.  Things settled down after that, with the only other run scoring on a Dan Butler homer in the fifth.  That was the only hit Pawtucket had after the third inning.

Matt Tracy pitched five innings, giving up five runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts.  D. J. Baxendale and Kam Mickolio each pitched a perfect inning.  Zack Granite was 2-for-3 with a walk.  He has a sixteen-game hitting streak and has had more than one hit in thirteen of those games.  He is batting .348.  Field was 2-for-4 with a home run, his fifth.  ByungHo Park was 2-for-4.  Shuck was 1-for-2 with a home run, his third, and two walks.

CHATTANOOGA 7, TENNESSEE 5 IN TENNESSEE

Andy Wilkins hit a three-run homer in the first to give the Lookouts a 3-0 lead.  In the second, however, Ian Rice and Carlos Panalver each homered in a four-run inning to give the Smokies a 4-3 advantage.  It was 5-3 going to the sixth.  A walk, an error, and a hit batsman loaded the bases with one out.  An error plated two to tie the game and a two-out two-run double by Levi Michael put Chattanooga in the lead to stay.  Tennessee did not get the tying run up to bat.

Felix Jorge did not have one of his better days, pitching six innings and giving up five runs on nine hits and a walk with four strikeouts.  Jake Reed struck out four in two shutout innings to make his ERA 2.45.  He has 8 strikeouts in 7.1 innings.  John Curtiss got back on track with a perfect inning, lowering his ERA to 0.72.  He has 35 strikeouts in 25 innings.  T. J. White was 1-for-3 and is batting .327.  Edgar Corcino was 1-for-4 and is batting .301.  Wilkins' home run was his first.

FORT MYERS MIRACLE

The Miracle did not play due to the FSL All-star game.  The North defeated the South 5-2.  Brian Navaretto was 0-for-1.  Dereck Rodriguez pitched one inning, giving up two runs on two hits.  Sam Clay retired both men he faced.

CEDAR RAPIDS 2, CLINTON 1 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

It was scoreless until the sixth, when each team scored once.  In the eighth, Travis Blankenhorn walked, went to second on a ground out, and took third on a fly out.  Jaylin Davis then walked and stole second, leading to an intentional walk to Mitchell Kranson.  Blankenhorn then pulled off what appears to be a straight steal of home to give the Kernels the lead.  The LumberKings went down in order in the ninth.

Tyler Wells was brilliant, striking out ten in eight innings while giving up one run on four hits and no walks.  He has an ERA of 1.89 with a WHIP of 0.91 and 80 strikeouts in 57 innings.  Sounds like it's time to move him up.  Hector Lujan pitched a perfect inning to make his ERA 2.00.  Davis was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-4 and is batting .320.

DSL TWINS 6, DSL YANKEES 5 AT TWINS

The Yankees scored three in the sixth to go ahead 4-0.  In the seventh, Estamy Urena hit a three-run homer to cap a four-run inning, tying the score 4-4.  The Twins took the lead in the eighth on a walk, a passed ball, a wild pitch, and another passed ball.  The Yankees tied it in the ninth on a single, an error, and a sacrifice fly.  In the bottom of the ninth, a single and a two-base error put the winning run on third with one out and a ground ball brought home the winning run.

Luis Gil pitched three innings, giving up one run on four hits and a walk with one strikeout to make his ERA 1.00.  Fredderi Soto pitched two perfect innings to make his ERA 1.59.  Luis Bellorin pitched two shutout innings to lower his ERA to 1.04.  Frandy Torres struck out two in two shutout innings, keeping his ERA at zero with six strikeouts in 6.1 innings.  Samuel Vasquez was 2-for-5 to keep his average at .400.  Ruben Santana was 2-for-5 to make his average .370.  Urena was 1-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs and is batting .500.
