Game 74: Twins at Red Sox

Jose Berrios vs. Chris Sale

The Twins have allowed 2 runs total in their 3 games thus far on this roadtrip and now have their budding ace pitching. I get the feeling that if Berrios has a dominant start tonight in a win over Sale that it will be treated as a sort of coming out party by national media. It could also be the start of him getting serious consideration for an All-Star berth.

Sale of course is very familiar to the Twins since he used to bleach his socks. In his previous 5 starts vs. the Twins, he has an ERA of 6.91. Meanwhile, the Red Sox have never seen Berrios.

  1. This is the sixth career start for Gimenez in fenway

I can't be the only person that heard that and thought, "well, given the state of our rotation..."

    1. That gives Gimenez 5 dongers to go with 6 pitching appearances. Which does he have more of at the end of the season?

  2. I really want to see Berrios at least start the next inning. There's no one in the pen I trust as much as Berrios even at more than 90 pitches.

  3. Twins have 8 starts by pitchers with 7+ Ks in a game. Berrios has five of them. Santana has the other three. Prior to tonight, Twins were 7-0 in those games.

  4. I think the Twins did a pretty good job getting Sale out of there before the end of the 7th inning. Babe Gimenez is too much of a threat for Sale to face him, I guess.

  5. I wonder if Kepler will be playing first base now. He did quite a bit in the minors but I don't think he has in the majors. With a short bench, I wouldn't like the Twins to use up 2 players just for pinch running and defense when trailing in the 7th inning.

    1. I recall he only did that when he was recovering from an arm injury. Seems unlikely that a centerfielder would fill in at first sometimes if he's healthy.

  6. I like Berrios being in. I don't like Joe playing first base. That means the Twins only have their backup catcher on the bench, which means he probably won't pinch hit unless it's the ninth inning and we're trailing.
