Wildcard Game: Twins at Yanks

Rough day Monday. Las Vegas. Tom Petty. All of which pushed the crisis in Puerto Rico, North Korea... off the list of latest things that outrage/sadden us.

That's why we need this. The improbable run. This plucky band of brothers who thrilled us, made us smile, made us care about baseball again. Even if it's for one day, we need this. And we need it to be against the Yankees. It just feels like it was meant to be -- win or lose.

Winning would be great, but it's not necessary. It's playoff baseball and the Twins are participants. And for one day, heck for three (plus) hours, all will be right in our little corner of the world. The problems won't go away and there is a lot of healing that needs to be done, but for one evening, we can watch, rejoice, thrill, even cheer at a bunch of grown men trying to hit, throw, and catch a little ball.

Game 161: Tigers @ twins

We're almost there. For the first time in seven years, there WILL be October baseball that means something.

I'm hoping that this isn't my last game log for the year. It will be really nice if I need to half bake something for a game against the Spiders next Saturday.

Even if I don't get that opportunity, though, this year has been a success that I don't think any of us saw coming. There will be plenty of time to speculate about the best course moving forward, but for now, the best course of action is to drink another beer and watch the Twins beat up on a team that is decidedly tensing in the opposite direction.

Tonight, Slegermania takes hold again. I hope he's able to pitch however far into the game as the plan dictates. Also, some dude named Sanó gets to hopefully play his way into the Tuesday lineup.

If this it, then I've half-baked my last game log for the year. Go Twins!

Game 157: Clevelanders v. Minnesota Twins

Really not much to say here. The Twins on the path for the 2nd Wildcard and Cleveland winning at an historic rate lately, while still fighting for home field through the ALCS and perhaps World Series so both teams have something to play for.
Should be a fun series.

Bartolo Colon on the mound and based on previous starts, may not have a whole lot left or at least batters have figured out to just go after that big and sexy first pitch. Josh Timlin on the mound for the Wahoos and while his season numbers are 9-9 with a 4.98 ERA, he is 5-0 in his last five starts. Thus proving that old adage: when a team goes 29-2 over 31 games, the pitchers are going to pick up a bunch of wins.

Game time at 6:10p local. By 10:00p, we could be celebrating a playoff birth. What a country.

Game 156: Twins at Tigers (Morning Game Alert!)

Jose Berrios vs. Buck Farmer, 11:10 a.m.

It's still difficult to fathom what a turnaround this has been. The Twins haven't been a great team (although they are 31-21 since the new regime traded away Jaime Garcia and Brandon Kintzler at the trade deadline), but they were so historically bad last year and did so little to improve the team this year and yet they already have 22 more victories than last year with 7 games left, including 4 remaining with the sleepwalking Tigers.

A win today would not only finish off a 4-game sweep of the Tigers, it would drop the Magic Number down to 3 with a chance going down to 2, which would mean the Twins could clinch as early as Tuesday. In fact, the Twins could even clinch a tie (and a guarantee of more than 162 games) on Monday if both the Angels and Rangers lose.

Regardless, the Twins have made sure this season will be remembered for an epic turnaround from the previous season or an epic collapse that was set up by an epic turnaround.

A win today would also clinch a winning record. Remember, the Twins were 44 games under .500 last season.

For today's game, it would seem the Twins have a starting pitcher advantage based on their season results thus far. However, Berrios has really struggled against the Tigers in his short career, which is 3 starts. In all 3 starts, he's allowed 6 runs or more. Of course, the last (and only) time Farmer faced the Twins, he allowed 7 runs in just 1 1/3 innings. Let's try a different tactic today and get a big lead in the first inning and save us all some anxiety.

2017 Game 155: twins @ tigers

If the Twins win this evening, they'll match a win total that I would have, before the season began, considered a benchmark for a successful season.

They've done well - better than I would've expected, clearly - and have also been the benefactors of some crazy disparity in the AL (only five teams in the AL have records above .500. Considering that the AL has gone 156-137 in interleague play this season, it's not that there aren't a ton of wins to go around).

Game 154. Twins at Tigers

I think Kyle Gibson is going to have a pretty good game. The Tigers are not good and playing out the string with a lame duck manager. I think last game was just a blip, and really it was only a couple of innings he was bad.....I can't believe I believe Kyle Gibson can be a good pitcher. What a crazy season!

(that said, if a team is willing to trade a middling prospect for Gibson I won't complain)
