Minor Details: Games of July 16

A Red Wings comeback falls short.  Jonathan Rodriguez stays hot.  Sean Poppen continues to pitch very well.  The Kernels break out of their slump.  Brent Rooker hits his seventh homer.

LEHIGH VALLEY 4, ROCHESTER 3 IN LEHIGH VALLEY

The IronPigs scored two in the third to take a 2-0 lead.  Niko Goodrum singled in a run in the fifth to make it 2-1, but Dylan Cozens hit a two-run homer to put Lehigh Valley up 4-1.  The Red Wings got single runs in the seventh and eighth and had men on first and second with one out in the eighth.  A double play ended the inning, however, and Rochester would not get the tying run on base again.

Tim Melville struck out five in 4.1 innings but allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk.  Alan Busenitz struck out four in 1.1 scoreless innings to make his ERA 1.89 with a WHIP of 0.84 and 39 strikeouts in 33.1 innings.  John Curtiss struck out two in a scoreless inning, making his ERA 2.89 with a WHIP of 0.75 and 13 strikeouts in 9.1 innings.  Craig Breslow retired both batters he faced.  John Ryan Murphy hit a home run, his fourth.  Ryan Strausborger was 0-for-2 with a walk and is batting .095.

CHATTANOOGA 5, JACKSONVILLE 2 IN JACKSONVILLE

The Jumbo Shrimp scored in each of the first two innings, but the Lookouts got three in the bottom of the second to take the lead to stay.  Travis Harrison had a two-run double to tie the score and Nick Gordon had an RBI single to put Chattanooga in front.  The Lookouts added two more runs in the eighth.

Fernando Romero struck out six in five innings, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks.  Ryan Eades pitched three shutout innings.  Paul Clemens pitched a scoreless ninth.  Jonathan Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk and is batting .313.  He is batting .442 in his last ten games.  Max Murphy was 2-for-4.  Nick Gordon was 2-for-5 and is batting .301.

FORT MYERS 6, ST. LUCIE 3 IN FORT MYERS

A four-run third put the Miracle ahead 5-0 and they were not threatened the rest of the way.  Mitchell Kranson hit a two-run single and Zander Weil hit a two-run homer in the inning.  It was 6-0 before the Mets got on the board in the seventh.  They scored two in the eighth to make it 6-3 but did not get a man on base after that.  Tim Tebow was 0-for-3 with a walk and is batting .283 with an OPS of .877 in 60 at-bats.

Sean Poppen gave up his first run at high-A but had another excellent game, going 6.1 innings and giving up one run on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts.  His ERA is 0.55 with a WHIP of 0.86.  Kranson was 2-for-3 with a walk and is batting .304.  Sean Miller and Jaylin Davis were each 2-for-4 with a double.  Jermaine Palacios was 0-for-3 and is batting .313.  Brandon Lopez was 0-for-1 to make his average .313, but was removed from the game after being hit by a pitch.  I have no more information about that at this time.

CEDAR RAPIDS 8, SOUTH BEND 4 IN SOUTH BEND

Travis Blankenhorn hit a two-run triple in a three-run first and Amaurys Minier hit a three-run homer in a four-run third.  The Kernels cruised from there, with the Cubs never coming closer than the four runs they ultimately lost by.

Anthony Marzi pitched six innings, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk with four strikeouts.  His ERA is 1.37 with a WHIP of 0.71.  Patrick McGuff pitched two shutout innings to make his ERA 2.86 with 22 strikeouts in 22 innings.  Lewin Diaz was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Minier's home run was his second.

GREENEVILLE 8, ELIZABETHTON 4 IN GREENEVILLE

Brent Rooker homered in the second to give the Twins a 1-0 lead, but that was as good as it would get.  The Astros tied it in the fourth and a two-run homer by Gilberto Celestino in the fifth put them ahead to stay.  Roman Garcia's grand slam in the sixth made it 7-1.  Jordan Gore's three-run double in the eighth made the final score look better.

Edwar Colina struck out five in 4.1 innings but allowed three runs on four hits and four walks.  His ERA is 2.70 with 28 strikeouts in 26.2 innings.  Rooker's home run was his seventh.  Gore was 1-for-4 with a double and three RBIs and is batting .359.  Mark Contreras was 0-for-4 and is batting .327.
