Minor Details: Games of July 22 (Now Fully Baked!)

Hurlbut hurls a fine game.  Fernando Romero continues to impress.  A Fort Myers comeback falls short.  Griffin Jax is doing very well.  Poor baserunning sinks the E-Twins.  Glen Perkins and Daniel Palka has successful days in rehab.  Walks and errors decide things in the DSL.

ROCHESTER 4, TOLEDO 3 IN ROCHESTER

The Red Wings scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to take a 2-0 lead.  The Mud Hens got on the board in the seventh to make it 2-1, but RBI singles by Leonardo Reginatto and Edgar Corcino in the bottom of the seventh made it 4-1.  Rochester needed all those runs, because Toledo scored one in the eighth and one in the ninth and had the tying run on base before a fly out ended the game.

David Hurlbut pitched seven innings, giving up one run on six hits and no walks with four strikeouts.  Niko Goodrum was 2-for-3 with two doubles.  Reginatto was 2-for-3.  Matt Hague was 2-for-4 with a double.

CHATTANOOGA 7, MOBILE 0 IN MOBILE

A hit batsman, three consecutive singles, another hit batsman, and a sacrifice fly scored three first-inning runs for the Lookouts and they led all the way.  Chattanooga added two in the third and two more in the sixth on a Jonathan Rodriguez two-run homer.  The Lookouts only out-hit the BayBears 9-8.

Fernando Romero struck out six in five shutout innings, giving up three hits and three walks.  He threw 82 pitches.  His ERA is 2.68 and he has 103 strikeouts in 100.2 innings.  Randy LeBlanc struck out three in two shutout innings.  Raul Fernandez struck out two in two shutout innings.  Alex Perez was 2-for-3 with a double and is batting .321.  Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fourteenth), a walk, and three runs and is batting .315.

TAMPA 3, FORT MYERS 2 IN FORT MYERS

Nick Solak's RBI single put the Yankees ahead 1-0 in the first.  There was no more scoring until the eighth, when Angel Aguilar delivered a two-run single to make it 3-0.  The Miracle came back, getting a run on a Mitchell Kranson single in the eighth and scoring on a bases-loaded walk in the ninth.  The bases were still loaded with two out, but a fly out ended the game.

Starter David Fischer pitched only two innings.  Reports of the game do not disclose a reason why.  He gave up one run on one hit and four walks with four strikeouts.  Keaton Steele and Williams Ramirez each pitched two shutout innings, with Ramirez striking out three.  Kranson was 3-for-4.  Kevin Garcia was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Jermaine Palacios was 2-for-5 with a double and is batting .340.  Brandon Lopez was 1-for-4 with a walk and is batting .313.

CEDAR RAPIDS 12, LANSING 4 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

The Kernels scored single runs in the first and second.  Ben Rortvedt hit a three-run homer in the third and Cedar Rapids added three more in the fourth to build an 8-0 lead.  The Lugnuts did not get back into the game.

Griffin Jax pitched 6.2 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and three walks and three strikeouts to make his ERA 2.39.  Patrick McGuff struck out three in 1.1 scoreless innings to drop his ERA to 2.49 with 31 strikeouts in 25.1 innings.  Trey Cabbage was 2-for-3 with a home run and two walks.  Travis Blankenhorn was 2-for-4 with a double and three runs.  Lewin Diaz was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.  Christian Cavaness was 2-for-4.  Rortvedt's home run was his third and he had four RBIs.

BLUEFIELD 4, ELIZABETHTON 1 IN ELIZABETHTON

The Blue Jays scored two in the first and led all the way.  It was 4-0 when the Twins finally got on the board in the sixth on a single by J. J. Robinson.  They had the bases loaded with one out in that inning, but a strikeout and a fielder's choice ended the threat.  They failed two score in the seventh despite getting a double, a single, and a walk, as they lost two runners on the bases.  They did not threaten after that.

Edwar Colina struck out five in 5.1 innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on nine hits and two walks to make his ERA 2.81 with 33 strikeouts in 32 innings.  Jared Finkel pitched 3.2 scoreless innings.  Shane Carrier was 2-for-4 and is batting .319.  Jose Miranda was 2-for-4 and is batting .309.

GCL TWINS 7, GCL RED SOX 0 AT TWINS (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

The Twins scored four in the first and two in the second to cruise to a win.  The Red Sox' biggest threat came in the second, when back-to-back singles put men on first and second with one out.  However, the Red Sox would get only one more hit the rest of the game.

Glen Perkins started and pitched a perfect inning, striking out two.  Brusdar Graterol struck out five in five shutout innings to lower his ERA to 1.40 with a WHIP of 0.72 and 21 strikeouts in 19.1 innings.  Jose Bermudez pitched a perfect inning.  Jared Akins was 2-for-3 with a double.  Daniel Palka was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Royce Lewis was 2-for-3 with a walk and is batting .333.  Ricky De La Torre was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Benjamin Rodriguez was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk and is batting .333.  Alex Robles was 1-for-4 and is batting .329.

GCL RED SOX 4, GCL TWINS 2 AT RED SOX (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

An error, a wild pitch, and a ground out put the Twins on the board in the first.  The Red Sox took advantage of two walks, a balk, and an error in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead.  Alex Robles scored on a second-and-home double steal in the fourth to cut the lead to 3-2, but that was as close as the Twins would come.

Starter Taylor Clemensia was only allowed to face four batters, giving up two hits and two walks for three runs.  Carlos Suniaga then struck out five in 4.1 scoreless innings to make his ERA 0.96 with a WHIP of 0.80.  Kerby Camacho was 0-for-0 with three walks and is batting .353 with an OBP of .542.  Robles was 1-for-2 with a walk and is batting .333.  Benjamin Rodriguez was 0-for-3 and is batting .317.  Royce Lewis was 0-for-4 and is batting .316.

DSL YANKEES 8, DSL TWINS 5 AT YANKEES

The Yankees scored one in the second, four in the third, and two in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead.  They were aided by five walks, two errors, and two wild pitches in those innings.  The Twins got one in the sixth and four in the seventh to get back into the game, with Cesar Salazar delivering a two-run single in the seventh inning.  That was as good as it would get, though, as the Twins did not get a man past first in the final two innings.

Luis Gil pitched 2.1 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on two hits and three walks with one strikeout.  Cristian Castro retired all seven men he faced, striking out four of them.  Yeison Perez was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Salazar was 2-for-4.  Ruben Santana was 0-for-3 with a walk and is batting .365.  Estamy Urena was 0-for-2 and is batting .359.

  1. If nothing unexpected happens, we'll add recaps of the GCL and DSL Twins this afternoon.

Well, something unexpected happened. Nothing too terrible, but it kept me from getting the recaps done this afternoon. I'll finish them either tonight or tomorrow morning. Unless something unexpected happens.
