16 August 2017: That’s All Right

Forty years ago today, Elvis left the building for good. Seems like the rampant conspiracy theories about his whereabouts have mostly fallen out of popular circulation. My Memphis friends tell me he's still larger than life downriver.

I've felt ambivalent about Elvis' music most of my life, though in recent years I've come to appreciate his gospel recordings. The early stuff is hit-and-miss; the closer to country, the more I like it, the closer to rock & roll, the more I'd rather listen to Chuck Berry or Buddy Holly. I can't abide the movie soundtrack stuff, but find the over-the-top Seventies productions with the TCB Band and J.D. Sumner & the Stamps to be pretty listenable in small-ish doses:

  1. "Minor Details" will be delayed again today. I hope to get to it later in the day, but make no promises.

    1. Very much a fan here.

My favorites vary pretty significantly with my mood, but (Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame , (Now and Then There's) A Fool Such As I, (You're The) Devil In Disguise and Suspicious Minds would all regularly be towards the top of my list.

Apparently I'm also very much a fan of songs with parentheticals in the title.

  2. Going to tonight's game with work. Entertaining a client, we have a suite.
Thunderstorms forecast: will it be played?
I wonder what happens to suite tix for rainouts?

    1. So suite tix are only good for the replayed game.
I assume the catering my company's paying for only comes once.

    2. I'll be at tomorrow afternoon's game for a company outing, assuming it's not rained out.

  3. Ian Kinsler seemed like he was in a mood on Sunday when he put up an 0-4 performance, tossing his helmet & bat away more than once. It was part of a 1-13 skid, which was likely frustrating, but certainly nothing he's not experienced before. We all have bad days at work, I guess. I don't know if that frustration was part of his imbroglio with Ángel Hernández on Monday, but I'm not going to quibble with him blasting Hernández, whose skin seems to be so thin that he's practically a walking anatomy & physiology dummy.

  4. Anyone still use the World's Greatest Book Exchange? I was thinking I'd update my offerings tonight.

PS - DG I totally forgot "my" copy of Gravity's Rainbow came from you via WGBE. Did you ever want it back?
PPS - I have your Hugo Awards book in my bag, I just gotta get to the post office.

    1. My books are still packed away, but after I finish this one I'm currently reading I was thinking about looking over the available selections.

  5. Jered Weaver announced his retirement today. Bartolo Colon was a teammate of his and Colon was in his 10th season when Weaver made his MLB debut in 2006. Colon was in his age 33 season at the time.

    1. Is that the good, young Weaver, or the gloriously scuzzy older brother?
Answer: Good, young Weaver. Jeff was the scuzzy one, retired in 2010, six years older.

    1. I was never sure if they a trio or a quartet, I mean "Joe Frank"? Seriously who calls themselves "Joe Frank"?

      1. I went to college with Joe Frank. Not that Joe Frank. My Joe Frank is a bankruptcy attorney.

    1. Alcohol/drug problem? Brain tumor?

I thought his account had been hacked. That was quite the career suicide.

    2. My favorite part is him stating he is tired of all the name-calling and then calling democrats a bunch of [redacted]

      1. the city pages has a pretty comprehensive take down if you're really curious. Also, my initial response appears to be tagged spam, so, yeah.

    1. so many thoughts, and one question ---> how much suction do you have with the Steinbrenner family?

    2. This is awesome. But why isn't there a Dread Pirate file at the end of the article like there is for Dowd?
