September 8, 2017: The Comeback

Good game last night. However, Provus was treating it like they came back from a 5 run deficit to win Game 7. They came back from one run down in a game they shouldn't have been.

  1. I bought a Toddy because I had some disposable income and some disposable counter space (Dr. Chop doesn't agree with that last point). The coffee concentrate made by CDM was smooth yet bold, and produced 24 ish cups for $4.50 (plus the cost of the toddy, of course). I'm really impressed with the results.

    1. I never thought of it as passive aggressive ... I use it to make sure that something intended to be humorous isn't misconstrued as mean/snarky.

          1. I've never seen an eggplant emoji before, but tonight this boyo is making a dish that I discovered in Turkey many years ago - I think they call it "The Imam Fainted With Delight":
            1/2 lb ground lamb
garden eggplant (this year I planted Japanese eggplant - thin and long)
            garden tomatoes
            onion, chopped
            cinnamon
            Kosher salt
            ground pepper
            grated Parm-Regg
            olive oil

In a skillet, brown the ground beef and cook the onions in the juices at the same time. Liberally add cinnamon, cracked black pepper, and salt. Set aside. Add some olive oil, then cook the eggplant discs (you will have to add more oil as the discs will suck it up). Chop up the tomatoes with a chopper, then place the discs into the bottom of a Pyrex baking dish, then top with tomatoes, then the meat, then the cheese. Bake for a while, then right before serving turn on the broiler so that the cheese on the top gets a little char. Seems like the Turkish version added some sugars but I don't.

            1. Sounds good, I may try that this weekend. I'm pretty sure that's not the reason those eggplant emojis get used, though....

  2. I didn't hear Provus' calls, but we are talking about a late-season comeback. I know we complained about this sort of thing earlier in the year with regard to someone... (maybe also Provus? I don't recall), and one of the things we observed was that keeping something in the tank for late season is nice. So maybe its more forgivable now than earlier, I guess is what I'm saying?

    1. I listened to the last 1½ innings with the volume low so as not to wake Mrs. Runner; I didn't note any excessive excitement. It's not like he shouted himself horse and threw in several "I don't believe it!" or anything.

      1. I'm not saying he was freaking out during the actual gameplay. Just in the last inning or so, he kept painting it as some momentous comeback of grave importance. Yes, we need these wins late in the season, but it wasn't that stupendous.

        1. Yeah, I was listening to Wednesday day game in the car, and Provus was the same then. "A game the Twins have to have," and "must-win" was thrown around by Corey several times. I was like dude, they're a half-game back in the wildcard.

          1. This is the first time since he's been with the Twins that they've had a real chance at the playoffs. I'm willing to cut him a little slack.

            1. I guess it depends on your definition of "real chance." In the same part of the season in '15, the Twins were only 1 game back of a playoff spot behind Texas, but the Rangers went on a huge run and passed the Yankees and the Astros and won the West, so I think it inevitable that the Twins weren't going to get in even though they were very close with 3 weeks left.

        2. I still remember a blown save by LaTroy in August of 2001 that to me was the final nail in the coffin for that season after the Twins had led the division for pretty much the full first half. If a blown save can be that memorable in a negative way, then I would think a 9th-inning rally should be just as memorable in a positive way. Of course, the one in '01 was blowing a 3-run lead with 2 outs and no one on base in Cleveland.

  3. I don't know if this was discussed yesterday, but Molitor mentioned last night that the team is likely done with September call ups. I'm okay with this. There are some prospects I'd like to see early next year, but it's not like Gonsalves has been killing it in AAA.

    1. I disagree. I don't know that I'd play any more of them much, but I'd have a few more around to do things like pinch-run, pitch in blowouts, provide insurance against injury, etc. What's the downside to it?

      1. I also would like to see the bench filled out a little more. They have as many position players now with an expanded roster as they used to have throughout the regular season before these bloated bullpens took hold.

  4. BoJack Horseman season 4 is now on Netflix. It's so cruel that I got the email about it less than an hour before work, but I know what I'll be doing for at least part of Sunday and Monday.

I'm sure I've harped on it excessively, but it's one of the best-written shows in my lifetime.

    1. Oh boy, can't wait to dive back in. Sadly, we'll be loving with my parents for a few weeks to get the plaster cracks in our walls repaired from when the demo idiots knocked out two load-bearing walls during our basement construction, so I don't know how quickly I'll get to it.

    2. Making the switch from Uverse to DirecTV today, so I'm anxious to see how well the apps work on PC and phone. Free HBO, Showtime, and Starz promotion for three months, and yes I have marked my calendar at the appropriate time to cancel prior to three months.

      1. Why the switch?
The Mrs had to do the annual "give us back our rate or we cancel" dance with ATT and one of their pitches was DirecTV.

Thinking about maybe switching to Comcast/Wave next time, but it is a hassle since we have internet bundled.

        1. cash grab.

DirecTV has a lot for ATT to like, so they're pushing it. From a consumer standpoint, it's half the price, has a slew more options (a ton of material is made available on demand that isn't otherwise) and the ability to watch from a phone, etc. is really nice too, and I think it has more bandwidth to work with. No affect on my (ATT) internet.

    1. They are doing everything they can to make themselves irrelevant. I watch games on there, but that's about it.

    2. They do have Wild Card: MIN at NYY (in small font), but then presuppose that the yanquis will win it. Bastardos!

  5. If anyone's got a hankering for some wolves basketball, ESPN is streaming Senegal VS. South Africa. Gorgui Dieng started the game off with a three.

  6. On the topic of comebacks, I give you Chairman Mauer. Joe leads the team and ranks 7th in the league with a .306 batting average, is 4th in the AL in on-base percentage (behind Trout, Altuve and Judge), and sports a 2.8 WPA, tied with Marwin Gonzalez for 7th in the AL. I should also point out that he is 10th in the AL in Base-Out Runs Added and Base-Out Wins Added, but I have no idea what those things are so I won't. On defense, only Buxton adds more value to the team. Mauer's committed just one error this season (a tough running foul ball catch that hit the heel of his glove and popped out), good for a .999 fielding percentage and UZR of 5.2. And he could become just the third player to win Fielding Grammys at two different positions in the 60 year history of the award. So we got that going for us, which is nice.

        1. I have a foul ball he hit off of Brad Radke at the Metrodome, just one smudge mark from his black bat on it. It was Radke's last season, so it must have been this game.

  7. Fall in H’istan (Ode to Fluffy)

    Geese fly in V’s.
    Plouffe sponge de-lints dryer duct.
    Sure, tomatoes now.
