I love curling and all, but as I was attempting my last shot last night at 11:30, having played two games nearly back to back and or fourth game in two days, I was not upset when I missed and lost so I didn't have to go back or today. It was a fun but exhausting weekend.
Interesting story by Tom Verducci: World Series baseballs may not be juiced, but they are slicker so pitchers can't properly throw a slider.
Boswell on Gurriel/Darvish.
I wish he would have included something about the AJ Hinch call to Roberts too. But still on point. Unlike the non-apology apology issued by the Astros (basically saying he is sorry if anyone was offended).
I don't appreciate all of the SJW types calling for Gurriel's head on a hike over this. I do appreciate that what he did needs to be taken seriously. A five game suspension will cost him a good chunk of change. I hope he takes the opportunity after the season to do some outreach to Asian communities in the Houston area to actually learn something.
Pro athletes are public figures and therefore role models to many. These young men need more etiquette counseling on how to comport themselves in public.
Given how young players are when they start their journys to MLB and the absence of typical developmental settings that often entails, an Etiquette Coach might be a valuable addition to front offices. Or hey, hire some gifted teachers to help players develop their minds & expand their worldviews in the offseason.
Yep. These kids need mentoring in how to Adult.
Note in this case, the kid is 33. Rosenthal reported that Beltrán handled it on both sides.
Wow. I had no idea Gurriel was that old. Absolutely no excuse.
I figured he was early/mid-20s, given that idiotic haircut.
I believe I have read that a lot of professional sports leagues (for sure the NFL), do have multiple seminars for incoming players that talk about topics like this. Probably from more of an "avoid bad P.R." point of view, but they do get some training on common sense. The question is whether or not some of these kids are ready to actually actively listen to the material provided. I would be shocked if most teams do not have someone in place already to mentor young players through these topics.
If they don't already, they should grab some recently retired players with great reputations and acceptable world views and have them meat with teams and players to better prepare them. If I was a G.M. I would do that and tell my staff to give me a heads up if there are talented players who are headcases and more readily include them when making trades.
So, first night off from work for it seems like forever. Wife and I on the couch watching the World Serires on the TV (muted) and watching favorite U2 moments on youtube. This version of Bullet the Blue Sky is in the Forbidden Zone, but awesome. Watching them play TCF stadium in a thunderstorm was pretty cool. The 1991 Zoo TV tour, I happened by Target Center in the afternoon and Bono and the Edge were standing outside talking to about 15 of us for quite a while. My college buds and I getting up on the roof of the PAC and lip-syncing where the streets have no name was super fun, especially when the campus cops showed up and chased us away. I know many of you are not U2 fans, but I am older than most of you and younger than some of you, and much of my age group loves these guys. They started out punkish, then changed their sound multiple times. I grew up in some fairly racist surroundings. It was some brave voices in the music world who helped me open up my eyes, and Bono /U2 head up the list. Some people accuse them of being to commercial and some people accuse them of being to political. Well political musicians tend to be hurt commercially, so U2 kind of bucks the trend. I guess what I am saying is that I love this band, I love this World Series, and I have had 4 glasses of wine. 🙂
Heh. Have you found what you were looking for?
still haven't, but it's a journey not a destination, right?
