You guys. You're all the best. Please go forth and spread love and joy. Oh, and also stay safe. That too.

Had the day off yesterday, so decided to do some grouse-hunting.
Heading east of Sandstone on 23, I was passing another car and there were three deer standing along the left side of the highway. Just as I passed the car, one of the deer decides to bolt across the road. Because I just passed the other car, I couldn't brake. The deer smashed into my rental, tearing off the driver's side rear-window, smashing the front left panel, and cracking the windshield. The deer was immediately dead, and luckily, I wasn't hurt. The car was still drivable, so after reporting everything to all the right people, I continued on to hunting.
I hunted mostly around Blackhoof River WMA. I got 5 flushes from 3 grouse, one not-so-good shot, but no birds in the bag. I did get to see two goshawks up close, and one what-looked like a rough legged hawk (dark patches underneath the elbow).
Damn. Did you get to keep the deer?
I didn't bother with it as I was focused on the grousery. Looked like a big mess also.
Deer One to Deer Two and Three: "Dudes, hold my beer."
Glad you are ok. Too bad for Bambi.
Nice birds, and your ID of a Rough-legged sounds good. I saw two today (one dark-morph) on the 7 mile drive from Courtland to New Ulm
I hate to start a day of thanks off negatively but my wife has left me no choice. The Thanksgiving day parade on NBC is just the worst. I have never seen more awkward and annoying commentary in my life.
I would be right there with you. The Rose Parade may be worth watching this year, though...
lol
I’ll tune in for that because Will and Kristen Wigg’s lifetime movie was spectacular.
Do they really need a commentary team for a parade? Might bee cool to have music and infographics
Do they even have a parade? Unless you call them parading out the various musical numbers a parade (which I don't)
Best line: That Macy's CEO is smiling because he's getting a tax break!
I dont know if they had a parade. I don't watch em (not even the hometown summer town festival parades)
Time to warm up a frying pan melt a little butter in it and throw a bunch of leftover in the pan and let it cook!
Tried splatchcock turkey. Yup, a winner. Had to do a Gluten Free Thanksgiving Dinner, and yup... nailed it. Vikings win. Family all took off for a few hours and I am watching 22 Jump Street, cuz no one is around to judge. Priceless.
Yes. Spatchcock Lyfe.
As I am hobbled, my influence on prep was minimal. We did not brine. The Mrs did the surgery on the bird.
We did dry-rub about two hours before the bird went on (modified Kenji Alt-Lopez rub with baking powder) and smoked for about 2.5 hours. Put a quart of hot chicken broth in the drip pan with chopped onion, chopped apple, lots of garlic, mushrooms, bay leaves, allspice and juniper berries. Smoked stock for gravy is the Bomb. (Chopped giblets and chopped mushrooms for the gravy)
I grilled one turkey, but didn't spatchcock, mostly because I don't know what balanced to my poultry shears. Both turkeys got brined, though, so they both turned out excellent.
Of course, I've now got a lot of stock to make tomorrow.
I also did very minimal prep ahead of time. Some seasonings a few hours in advance. I did reverse sear the bugger. 275 for a couple hours, rubbed some butter on the skin then torched it at 450. Dark meat was 165 degrees and the White was 145 degrees. Perfect and more tender and moist than I have ever seen.
Speaking of Juniper Berries. I toast them, grind them and then use coat my Ahi Tuna with them before I sear rare.
I harvest my own when I want them off trees in the neighborhood.
Cornish game hens stuffed with wild rice. Green beans. Acorn squash.
Will turn leftover hen into chicken salad with walnuts, cranberries, celery, and Boursin cheese. So good.
Our glögg experiment was a partial success. I found the drink a little on the sour side, and I'm not sure I wouldn't have liked it better cold instead of out of the crockpot. Still, much food was consumed.
just jane, the boy, and i. turkey meatloaf, green bean casserole, mashed potaters, and pumpkin pie.
