Off-Season’s Greetings: Games of January 1

The Mexican League playoffs begin.

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

No games scheduled.  The playoffs start today.

MEXICAN LEAGUE

Twins:  None.

The playoffs started.  It looks like teams play head-to-head matchups, in what I think is a best-of seven series.  There are six teams in the playoffs.  As I recall, the three winners, plus the loser who does the best, move on to the next round.  I could be wrong about that, though.  Finding information on how winter league playoffs work is not easy, at least not for me.

CULIACAN 2, JALISCO 1 IN CULIACAN

All the runs were scored in the fourth inning.  With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the fourth, Culiacan somehow scored two runs on a ground out to the first baseman to take the lead.  Jalisco out-hit Culiacan 6-1.  Anthony Vasquez pitched 6.1 innings for Culiacan, giving up one run on five hits and a walk and striking out five.  For Jalisco, Japhet Amador hit a home run.  Tyler Alexander struck out eight in seven innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on one hit and one walk.

Culiacan takes a 1-0 lead in the series.

NAVOJOA 5, HERMOSILLO 0 IN NAVOJOA

Navojoa broke a scoreless tie with four in the fourth and added one in the eighth.  Paul Leon was 3-for-4 with a double.  Eddie Gamboa pitched seven shutout innings, giving up one hit and two walks and striking out five.  Hermosillo had just one hit.

Navojoa takes a 1-0 lead in the series.

MEXICALI 2, MAZATLAN 1 IN MEXICALI

Luis Juarez homered in the seventh to tie it 1-1 and Walter Ibarra scored from first on a two-out ninth-inning double by C. J. Retherford to win it.  Sergio Mitre pitched seven innings, giving up one run on six hits and a walk with two strikeouts.  For Mazatlan, Roy Merritt pitched eight innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk and striking out three.  Mazatlan out-hit Mexicali 7-4.

Mexicali takes a 1-0 lead in the series.
