Off-Season’s Greetings: Games of January 21

A tough day for Twins players.

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

Twins:  Willians Astudillo (Anzoategui) was 0-for-3.

LARA 4, ANZOATEGUI 0 IN LARA

Henry Urrutia hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Lara led all the way.  Urrutia was 2-for-2 with two walks in addition to the home run.  Jorge Martinez pitched 5.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and two walks and striking out three.

The series is tied 1-1.

MEXICAN LEAGUE

CULIACAN 4, NAVOJOA 0 IN NAVOJOA

All four runs came in the fourth inning, as Culiacan got a walk, two doubles, a single, and another double.  Edgar Gonzalez pitched six shutout innings, giving up four hits and two walks and striking out four.

Culiacan leads the series 2-0.

DOMINCAN LEAGUE

AGUILAS 7, ESCOGIDO 0 AT AGUILAS

The Aguilas scored two in the third, three in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one in the eighth.  Danny Santana was 2-for-5 with two home runs (his second and third of the playoffs), driving in three.  Richelson Pena pitched seven shutout innings, giving up one hit and striking out three.

The Aguilas will go on to play Licey in the championship series starting Monday.

AUSTRALIAN LEAGUE

Twins:  Todd Van Steensel (Sydney) struck out three in 1.1 innings, but allowed three runs on four hits and a walk.

MELBOURNE 7, ADELAIDE 5 IN MELBOURNE

Melbourne lost a 5-2 lead, but Tyler Neslony delivered a two-out two-run single in the seventh to break a 5-5 tie.  Allan de San Miguel was 2-for-4 with two home runs (his fourth and fifth), driving in three.  Jon Kennedy struck out six in four innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits.  For Adelaide, Rodrigo Ayarza was 3-for-5 with two doubles.

SYDNEY 15, CANBERRA 12 IN SYDNEY

Sydney trailed by 4-0 and 5-2, took an 11-5 lead, had it cut to 11-10, and scored four in the eighth to put the game out of reach.  Mitchell Edwards was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a walk, driving in three.  Lars Anderson was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run (his second), driving in five.  Alex Howe was 2-for-3 with a double and two walks, scoring three times.  For Canberra, David Kandilas was 3-for-6 with a double and three RBIs.  Boss Moanaroa was 2-for-5 with a three-run homer (his sixth) and a walk.  Jay Baum was 2-for-4 with a double and two walks, scoring three times.

PUERTO RICAN LEAGUE

CAROLINA 9, SANTURCE 1 IN CAROLINA (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Leading 2-1, Carolina scored six in the fourth to put the game out of reach.  Anthony Garcia was 3-for-3 with a double and four RBIs.  Edwin Diaz was 1-for-2 with a home run, his second.  Giovanni Soto pitched 5.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk and striking out three.

CAROLINA 4, SANTURCE 3 IN CAROLINA (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Carolina led 4-0 after four.  Santurce scored three in the fifth and had the tying run on third in both the fifth and the seventh.  For Carolina, Jeff Dominguez was 2-for-3.  For Santurce, Jan Hernandez was 3-for-3 with a double.

MAYAGUEZ 2, CAGUAS 1 IN MAYAGUEZ (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Jiandido Tromp broke a 1-1 tie with an RBI double in the sixth.  Andrew Barbosa pitched 4.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits and three walks and striking out four.  For Caguas, Luis Gonzalez pitched 5.2 innings, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks and striking out four.

CAGUAS 3, MAYAGUEZ 1 IN MAYAGUEZ (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Mayaguez led 1-0 after six, but David Vidal homered to tie it and Jack Lopez delivered a two-run single to give Caguas the lead and the win.  Vidal's home run was his fourth.  Orlando Roman pitched five innings, giving up an unearned run on four hits and striking out three.  For Mayaguez, Nelson Arocho pitched three shutout innings, giving up one hit and three walks.  Tyler Herron struck out four in three perfect innings.
