Winter Wonderland: Games of January 18

GIGANTES

AGUILAS 7, GIGANTES 4 AT GIGANTES

The Aguilas scored five runs in the seventh to break a 2-2 tie.  Luis Juarez homered to break the tie and Jonathan Villar contributed a two-run double.  For the Gigantes, Abiatal Avelino was 2-for-2 with a triple and two walks, scoring twice.  Kelvin Gutierrez was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.  Jose Siri was 2-for-5 with a double.  Chris Ellis pitched six innings, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk and striking out two.

Record:  The Gigantes lose the Dominican League Championship series to the Aguilas, three games to four.

LARA

ARAGUA 6, LARA 4 AT ARAGUA

Aragua scored three in the first and three in the seventh to build a 6-1 lead.  Lara got the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but no more.  For Lara, Gorkys Hernandez was 2-for-4 and Ildemaro Vargas was 2-for-5 with a double.  Ex-Twin Rene Reyes was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer.  Henry Centeno started but pitched just 1.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks and striking out two.

Record:  Lara leads the best-of-seven series three games to two.

Next game:  Lara hosts Aragua tonight.

MAYAGUEZ

MAYAGUEZ 20, MANATI 7 AT MANATI

After scoring thirty runs Sunday, Mayaguez slacked off to just twenty on Monday.  It was 3-2 after two and 9-7 after five, but Mayaguez then scored eight in the sixth and single runs in each of the last three innings.  Ex-Twin Kennys Vargas was 5-for-6 with a home run, a double, three runs, and five RBIs.  Emmanuel Rivera was 4-for-7 with two home runs and three runs.  Jeremy Rivera was 4-for-5 with a home run, a triple, two runs, and four RBIs.  David Vidal was 2-for-5 with a home run and three runs.  Christian Colon was 2-for-5 with two doubles, a walk, two runs, and three RBIs.  Xavier Fernandez was 2-for-5 with a walk and two runs.  Ivan De Jesus was 2-for-7 with a three-run homer and a double.  Luis Medina started and pitched 3.1 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits and no walks and striking out two.  Yadier Molina, who was the DH for Manati, pitched the last inning for them.

Record:  Mayaguez leads the best-of-seven series 3-0.

Next game:  The schedule shows that Mayaguez and Manati will play a doubleheader today.  The second game, of course, is "if necessary".

MELBOURNE

No game scheduled.  Their next game is Thursday afternoon, when they host Brisbane.  Melbourne is 11-5, in first place in the Australian League, one game ahead of Adelaide.

AGUILAS 9, GIGANTES 3 AT GIGANTES (GAME 5)

The Aguilas scored five in the eighth to break a 3-3 tie.  They had four singles, two walks, and a hit batsman in the inning.  Ronald Guzman led the Gigantes, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, and two RBIs.  Moises Sierra was 2-for-4 with a double.  Kelvin Gutierrez was 1-for-4 with a home run.  Dustin Crenshaw started for the Gigantes, pitching five innings and giving up two runs on four hits and two walks and striking out one.

Sunday

AGUILAS 6, GIGANTES 5 AT AGUILAS (GAME 6)

The Aguilas built a 6-1 lead, then held on as the Gigantes scored four in the ninth.  Richard Urena was 2-for-2 with two walks for the Gigantes.  Abiatal Avelino was 2-for-4.  Jose Siri was 1-for-5 with a three-run homer.  Ronald Guzman was 1-for-4 with a home run.  Starter Scott Harkin lasted just 3.1 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and no walks and striking out one.

Record:  The Dominican League Championship Series is tied 3-3.

Next game:  The Gigantes will host the championship-deciding game tonight.

LARA 8, ARAGUA 4 IN ARAGUA (GAME 4)

Lara scored three in the seventh to take a 4-2 lead and put it out of reach with three more in the ninth.  Gorkys Hernandez hit a three-run homer in the seventh to give Lara the lead.  Hernandez was 3-for-5 for the game.  Raul Rivero struck out eight in six innings, giving up six hits and two walks.

Record:  Lara leads the best-of-seven semi-final series 3-1.

Next game:  Lara is at Aragua tonight.

MAYAGUEZ 30, MANATI 8 AT MANATI

Mayaguez was finally cleared to play, and they apparently had a lot of runs stored up from the break.  It was 4-2 through four, but Mayaguez scored five in the fifth, nine in the sixth, nine in the eighth, and three in the ninth.  Emmanuel Rivera was 4-for-5 with two home runs, two doubles, three runs, and ten RBIs.  Jeremy Rivera was 4-for-6 with a home run, four runs, and three RBIs.  Ex-Twin Kennys Vargas was 4-for-7 with two home runs, a double, three runs, and five RBIs.  Ex-Twin Danny Ortiz was 4-for-7 with a double, three runs, and two RBIs.  Christian Colon was 3-for-7 with three runs.  Ivan De Jesus was 2-for-2 with six walks, five runs, and four RBIs.  Hector Hernandez pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks and striking out one.

Record:  Mayaguez leads the best-of-seven semi-final series 2-0.

MELBOURNE 3, CANBERRA 1 IN MELBOURNE (7 1/2 INNINGS)

Ex-Twin Delmon Young's two-run single in the first gave Melbourne all the runs they would need.  Gift Ngoepe was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs.  Damek Tomscha was 2-for-4.  It was a bullpen game--Daniel McGrath started and pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and no walks and striking out none.

Record:  Melbourne is 11-5, in first place in the Australian League, 1.5 games ahead of Adelaide.

Next game:  Melbourne will host Brisbane Thursday afternoon.

GIGANTES

GIGANTES 5, AGUILAS 0 AT AGUILAS (GAME 4)

The Gigantes scored three in the fourth and two in the fifth, led by three home runs.  Ronald Guzman was 4-for-5 with a double.  Juan Francisco was 1-for-4 with a home run and a walk.  Peter O'Brien was 1-for-2 with a home run, a walk, and two RBIs.  Jose Siri was 1-for-4 with a home run and a walk.  Richelson Pena pitched seven shutout innings, giving up three hits and two walks and striking out four.

Record:  The Gigantes have taken a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Next game:  The Gigantes host the Aguilas tonight.

LARA

LARA 19, ARAGUA 10 AT ARAGUA (GAME 3)

Lara scored six in the second to go up 6-1.  Aragua scored six in the fifth to lead 9-6.  Aragua led 10-8 through eight, but Lara scored eleven runs in the ninth to win it.  They had two doubles, five singles, four walks, and two hit batsmen in the inning.  Carlos Rivero was 3-for-5 with a double.  Yordanys Linares was 3-for-6 with a double, three runs, and three RBIs.  Osman Marval was 2-for-4 with a walk and three runs.  Lara had just twelve hits, but drew twelve walks.  The teams combined to use nineteen pitchers, eleven of them by Aragua.

Record:  Lara leads the best-of-seven series 2-1.

Next game:  Lara is at Aragua Sunday night.

MAYAGUEZ

Nothing new to report.  The last word on the league website is from January 13, which says they are waiting for the Puerto Rico Department of Health to determine whether the series with Manati can continue.

MELBOURNE

MELBOURNE 2, CANBERRA 0 IN MELBOURNE

Kyle Perkins homered in the fifth and Jack Barrie had an RBI single in the sixth for the game's only runs.  Ex-Twin Delmon Young was 3-for-4.  Damek Tomscha was 2-for-4.  Perkins was 1-for-3 with a home run.  Tyler Beardsley struck out seven in six shutout innings, giving up three hits and a walk.

Stats:  Barrie was 1-for-3 and is batting .500.  Young is batting .449.  Darryl George was 1-for-4 and is batting. 349.  Tomscha is batting .308.  Jon Kennedy struck out four in 1.2 scoreless innings and has an ERA of 2.53.

Record:  Melbourne is 10-5, in first place in the Australian League, 1.5 games ahead of Adelaide.

Next game:  Melbourne again hosts Canberra tonight.

GIGANTES

No game scheduled.  The Gigantes are at the Aguilas tonight.  The Gigantes lead the best-of-seven series 2-1.

LARA

ARAGUA 5, LARA 4 AT LARA

Nothing new to report.  The league still waits for the Puerto Rico Department of Health to decide whether the series can continue.

MELBOURNE

MELBOURNE 4, CANBERRA 3 AT MELBOURNE

Jack Barrie homered in the fourth to break a 2-2 tie.  Chris Burke homered in the seventh for an insurance run and they needed it, as Canberra scored in the ninth on a pair of errors, a walk, and a passed ball.  They had runners on second and third when the game ended.  Barrie was 2-for-3 and had two home runs and three RBIs in the game.  Gunnar Kines pitched five innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks and striking out four.

Record:  Melbourne is 9-5, in second place in the Australian League, technically a half game ahead of Adelaide (5-2).

Next game:  Melbourne again hosts Canberra this afternoon.

GIGANTES

AGUILAS 6, GIGANTES 3 AT GIGANTES (GAME 3)

The Aguilas led 4-0 before the Gigantes scored three in the seventh.  In the eighth, however, Francisco Pena hit a two-run homer to seal the win for the Aguilas.  For the Gigantes, Peter O'Brien was 1-for-3 with a home run and Juan Francisco was 1-for-4 with a home run.  Chris Ellis pitched 4.2 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and four walks and striking out two.

Record:  The Gigantes lead the best-of-seven series 2-1.

Next game:  The Gigantes are at the Aguilas on Friday.

LARA 7, ARAGUA 6 IN LARA (GAME 1)

Aragua scored three in the top of the eighth to take a 6-4 lead, but Lara came back with three in the bottom of the eighth to go up 7-6.  Cesar Hernandez' two-run single brought home the tying and go-ahead runs.  Ildemaro Vargas was 3-for-4 with a triple, a double, and three runs.  Hernandez was 2-for-3 with two walks and three RBIs.  Osman Marval was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Carlos Rivero was 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs.  Ex-Twin Logan Darnell pitched five innings, giving up three runs on six hits and no walks and striking out one.

Record:  Lara leads the best-of-seven series 1-0.

Next game:  Lara host Aragua tonight.

MAYAGUEZ

The series with Manati remains in limbo.  I'm using Google Translate on the league website, which is sometimes tricky, but here's what I think is going on.  It appears that Manati has been cleared to play, but Mayaguez has not yet.  The clearance to play is up to the Puerto Rico Department of Health.  If they give the go-ahead for Mayaguez to play, the series will resume on Sunday.  if they don't, Manati will move on to play Caguas, the winner of the other semi-final series, in the finals.

MELBOURNE

MELBOURNE 9, CANBERRA 7 AT MELBOURNE

Melbourne built a 9-0 lead after six, then held on as Canberra scored two in the seventh and five in the ninth.  The tying run was up to bat when the game ended.  Ex-Twin Delmon Young was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.  Darryl George was 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs.  Blake Gailen was 2-for-4 with a home run (his second), a walk and three RBIs.  Jarryd Dale was 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, and three RBIs.  Jack Barrie was 2-for-4.  Brian Flynn struck out seven in seven innings, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk.

Stats:  Barrie is batting .500.  Young is batting .429.  George is batting .382.  Damek Tomscha was 1-for-4 and is batting .311.  Gailen is batting .306.  Flynn has an ERA of 0.89.  Drew Anderson struck out the only man he faced and has an ERA of zero.

Record:  Melbourne is 8-5, in second place in the Australian League, but technically a half game ahead of first-place Adelaide (4-2).

GIGANTES

GIGANTES 6, AGUILAS 2 AT AGUILAS (GAME 2)

The Aguilas scored two in the first, but the Gigantes tied it with two in the second and took the lead in the third on Ronald Guzman's RBI single.  Guzman was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Richard Urena was also 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Moises Sierra was 2-for-4.  Paolo Espino pitched six innings, giving up two runs on six hits and no walks and striking out five.

Record:  The Gigantes lead the best-of-seven series 2-0.

There's supposed to be an announcement made today in regard to whether Mayaguez' series with Manati will continue, and if so, when.

MELBOURNE

The Australian League website gives conflicting information regarding whether Melbourne's next game is tonight or tomorrow night.  Whichever it is, they are hosting Canberra.  Melbourne remains 7-5, in second place, behind Adelaide (3-1).

GIGANTES 5, AGUILAS 1 AT GIGANTES (GAME 1)

The Gigantes scored two in the first and never trailed.  Ronald Guzman was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs.  Kelvin Gutierrez was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.  Carlos Paulino was 2-for-4.  Cesar Valdez pitched five innings, giving up one run on two hits and a walk and striking out three.

Record:  The Gigantes lead the best-of-seven series 1-0.

LARA

No game scheduled.  Lara is in the playoffs, which will start Wednesday.  They will host Aragua in the first game of the best-of-seven series.

MAYAGUEZ

The series remains in limbo.  Their opponent, Manati, has been cleared to resume practices.  Mayaguez is awaiting COVID test results.  The Puerto Rican League is still hoping to resume the series, but no date for when it will resume has been given yet.

MELBOURNE

No game scheduled.  Melbourne remains 7-5, in second place in the Australian League, behind first-place Adelaide, which is 3-1.  Melbourne is scheduled to host Sydney on Wednesday.

MAZATLAN

Saturday

HERMOSILLO 1, MAZATLAN 0 IN HERMOSILLO (GAME 6)

The game's lone run scored in the second on two singles, a bunt, and a ground out.  Mazatlan had seven hits and five walks but stranded nine and hit into two double plays.  Ramon Rios was 2-for-4.  Francisco Rios pitched seven innings, giving up four hits and two walks and striking out five.

Record:  Mazatlan loses the best-of-seven series four games to two.  Our reporting from the Mexican League is therefore at an end for this season.

GIGANTES

No games scheduled.  The Gigantes will play Aguilas in a best-of-seven series for the Dominican League Championship starting Monday night.

LARA, GAME 38, 39, and 40

LARA 4, MAGALLANES 2 IN MAGALLANES

Lara scored two in the seventh to take a 3-2 lead.  Yojhan Quevedo was 2-for-2.  Cesar Puello was 2-for-3 with two walks.  Ex-Twin Rene Reyes was 2-for-4 with a home run, his second.  Angelo Palumbo started and pitched three innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks and striking out one.  Five relievers took it from there, pitching six shutout innings.

Sunday

LARA 11, ARAGUA 4 IN LARA (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Leading 4-2, Lara scored seven runs in the third to put the game out of reach.  Ex-Twin Rene Reyes was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and three RBIs.  Yonathan Mendoza was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and two runs.  Raul Rivero pitched three innings, giving up two runs on four hits and no walks and striking out one.

ARAGUA 9, LARA 4 IN LARA (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Each team scored four in the third, but Aragua got two more in the fourth and three in the seventh.  Jecksson Flores was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk to lead Lara.  Francisco Arcia was 2-for-3 and Cesar Puello was 2-for-4.  Josmar Cordero was 1-for-3 with a grand slam, his second homer.  Leonel Aponte pitched 2.1 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits and no walks and striking out one.

Stats:  Ex-Twin Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-3 and is batting .500.  Puello is batting .429.  Cordero is batting .311.  Ildemaro Vargas was 0-for-4 and is batting .308.  Vicente Campos gave up three runs (one earned) in one inning and has an ERA of 2.00.  Yapson Gomez gave up no runs in a third of an inning and has an ERA of 1.33.

Record:  Lara is 25-15, in first place in the Venezuelan League West, 2.5 games ahead of Magallanes.

Next game:  The mlb winter league website does not indicate when Lara's next game is.  I suspect it will be a playoff game, but I don't know when it will start or who they will play.

MAYAGUEZ

Their series against Manati remains in limbo due to COVID concerns.  If the series cannot be continued, Caguas will be the Puerto Rican League champions.

MELBOURNE

CANBERRA 2, MELBOURNE 1 AT CANBERRA (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Canberra scored single runs in the second and third.  Melbourne scored in the seventh and had the bases loaded with one out, but could not tie it up.  Gift Ngoepe was 2-for-2.  Tyler Beardsley pitched a six-inning complete game, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and no walks and striking out three.

MELBOURNE 3, CANBERRA 2 AT CANBERRA (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Melbourne scored two in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie.  Canberra scored one in the seventh and had the tying run on third base with the game ended.  Darryl George was 3-for-4 with a double.  Chris Burke (not the guy from "Life Goes On") was 2-for-2 with a walk.  Ex-Twin Delmon Young was 2-for-4 with a double.  Gunnar Kines pitched 4.1 innings, giving up one run on four hits and a walk and striking out two.

Stats:  Young is batting .395.  George is batting .360.  Damek Tomscha was 0-for-3 and is batting .317.

Record:  Melbourne is 7-5, in second place in the Australian League behind Adelaide, which is 3-1.  COVID concerns have played havoc with the Australian League schedule.

Next game:  Melbourne's next scheduled game is Wednesday when they host Sydney.

MAZATLAN

MAZATLAN 7, HERMOSILLO 2 IN MAZATLAN

Mazatlan scored three in the first and three in the third to take a 6-1 lead.  Edson Garcia was 2-for-3 with a walk and four RBIs.  Anthony Giansanti was 2-for-4 with two runs.  Edgar Torres pitched five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk and striking out three.

Record:  Mazatlan trails the best-of-seven series 2-3.

Next game:  Mazatlan is at Hermosillo tonight.

GIGANTES

GIGANTES 5, ESTRELLAS 3 AT ESTRELLAS

Kelvin Gutierrez hit a two-run homer in the first and the Gigantes led all the way.  Abiatal Avelino was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Gutierrez was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs.  Chris Ellis struck out seven in six innings, giving up one run on four hits and two walks.

Record:  The Gigantes won the best-of-seven series 4-2.

Next game:  The Gigantes will play the winner of the Aguilas/Toros series in the finals.  The first game of the series will be Tuesday.

LARA, GAMES 36 AND 37

MAGALLANES 7, LARA 2 IN LARA (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Magallanes scored three in the fourth to break a 2-2 tie.  Osman Marval was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs.  Yojhan Quevedo was 2-for-3 with a double.  Nestor Molina started and pitched 3.1 innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk and striking out two.

LARA 5, MAGALLANES 4 IN LARA (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Yordanys Linares RBI single in the sixth tied it 4-4 and Josmar Cordero's RBI single in the seventh won it for Lara.  Cesar Puello was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Linares was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Ex-Twin Logan Darnell pitched four innings, giving up two runs on six hits and no walks and striking out two.

Record:  Lara is 23-14, in first place in the Venezuelan League West, 1.5 games ahead of Magallanes.

Mayaguez' series with Manati remains in limbo due to COVID concerns.  The last I knew, a decision would be made Sunday or Monday in regard to whether the series would be continued.  If it is not, Caguas, which won the other semi-final series, will be declared the champion.

MELBOURNE

MELBOURNE 4, CANBERRA 3 AT CANBERRA (10 INNINGS)

Damek Tomscha hit a three-run homer in the ninth to tie it 3-3.  Blake Gailen then singled in the tenth to bring home the go-ahead run.  Tomscha was 2-for-3 with a walk in addition to the home run, which was his fifth.  Jake Romanski was 2-for-4.  Brian Flynn struck out eight in 6.1 scoreless innings, giving up four hits and no walks.

Record:  Melbourne is 6-4, in second place in the Australian League, no "games back", but in second by winning percentage behind Adelaide.

Winter Wonderland: Games of January 7

MAZATLAN

Mazatlan's game at Hermosillo was suspended after four and a half innings with Mazaltan leading 6-2.  Mazatlan trails in the best-of-seven series 3-1.  They are scheduled to complete the game today.

GIGANTES

ESTRELLAS 5, GIGANTES 3 AT GIGANTES

The Estrellas scored all five of their runs in the third, and it was enough.  Jeremy Pena hit a two-run homer in the inning.  Carlos Paulino was 2-for-3 with a home run and a walk for the Gigantes.  Richelson Pena started but lasted just 2.2 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and no walks and striking out one.

Record:  The Gigantes lead the best-of-seven series 3-2.

Next game:  The Gigantes are at the Estrellas again tonight.

LARA

Lara did not play yesterday.  Lara is 22-13, in first place in the Venezuelan League West, a game and a half ahead of Magallanes.  Lara hosts Magallanes for a doubleheader tonight.

MAYAGUEZ

Mayaguez' series against Manati appears to still be in limbo.  Mayaguez leads the series 1-0, but no other games have been played due to COVID concerns.  If the series cannot be continued, Caguas, which had the best regular-season record and won their playoff series, will be declared the champion.

MELBOURNE

CANBERRA 4, MELBOURNE 2 AT CANBERRA

Canberra scored two in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead and led the rest of the way.  Jarryd Dale was 2-for-4.  Blake Gailen was 2-for-5.  Derek Tomscha hit a home run, his fourth.  Daniel McGrath pitched 3.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and four walks and striking out three.

Stats:  Ex-Twin Delmon Young was 0-for-3 and is batting .393.  Darryl George was 1-for-5 and is batting .378.  Gailen is batting .333.  Tomscha is batting .313.  Jon Kennedy gave up one run in two innings and has an ERA of 2.57.  Ex-Twin Sam Gibbons pitched two-thirds of an inning without giving up a run and has an ERA of zero.

Record:  Melbourne is 5-4, in second place in the Australian League, a half game behind Adelaide.
