I'm thinking that southern Baja Peninsula drive for Diamondbacks fans is bogus.
Is there a ferry?
yep, but I doubt Phoenix is still closer
Maybe the San Diego border crossing is really, really, really slow these days.
Pro tip: “Accidentally” take the diplomatic lane. I got off with a warning at San Ysidro, but was threatened with a very hefty fine. Since I wasn’t supposed to be in Mexico and didn’t automatically get detained in the brig, that was fine by me.
Google Maps says there's a ferry from La Paz to Topolobampo. They say that takes 8:40. That seems really long for the 208km crossing of the Sea of Cortés. Maybe, since it's a ferry, it's not "driving time"? If so, the driving time from La Paz to Phoenix is 14:10. La Paz to San Diego is 18:40.
La Paz to San Diego via the ferry but minus ferry time is barely longer than the fully overland route. Maybe the roads north through Baja are slow?
Excluding ferry time would also explain how western Michigan is closer to Milwaukee than Chicago, even though an overland route would require driving through Chicago.
Kindof surprised Japan was able to force an extra end.
Now Korea has defeated every team in the tournament.
Sweden's only losses have been to Korea and Japan, so they or Japan were probably the second-best.
(Japan lost to China, Canada, Scotland, and Switzerland despite beating Korea and Sweden.)
I'd guess Japan is the favorite to beat Scotland for the Bronze Medal.
Kevin Koe lost the Bronze to Switzerland. First time Canada didn't make the gold medal game. Canada had gotten two medals (one men's and one women's) every Olympics since curling was added in 1998. This year, the only reason that their string of curling medals isn't broken is the new mixed doubles event.
I see The Athletic is adding some coverage of the United and planning to beef up Lynx coverage.
Also, Matt Trueblood's newsletter today is a good write-up of Odorrizi, and how he should specifically be good for dealing with Cleveland (but is otherwise a back of the rotation type of pitcher).
I don’t follow either team, but that’s cool. Have you been reading Dan Hayes (their new Twins beat writer)? I’d appreciate an opinion other than the one I’ve been forming.
So, uh, I don't actually have a subscription. I just bought one as a gift for someone and they keep sending me updates when they do stuff like this. I know someone (DW?) had asked about United coverage the other day, so figured I'd mention it here.
He seems fine to me. He quotes fWAR so gets points for that.
Yes, he not only used it, he provided a link to the Fangraphs page explaining WAR for the uninformed so he didn't have to write in the story what it meant.
I swear Cheryl Reeves was on twitterblasting The Athletic the other day for not covering any of the Lynx off-season moves/not covering the Lynx. Perhaps her voice was heard.
I would hope so. They get far too little coverage. Heck, I watched a couple games this summer on FSN and they both had the other team's broadcasters. What's with that?
Old man yelling at the sky here...
This has been one of those weeks, the non-Olympics real world is...something. And today I found out a company is going a different direction after what I thought was a great second-round interview yesterday. It was the first job in a long time that made me truly excited to think about, but thankfully I'm not unhappy at my current company. It just isn't very exciting and has next-to-zero career development/advancement opportunities. At least I didn't have long to get my hopes up.
Kind of in the same boat, but without applying to other companies yet. I turned in a bitchier-than-I-meant-to self-evaluation (don't get me started on that nonsense) yesterday in preparation for my review. There's a little room to grow here, but that's been a slog to try to get to even that. Currently, I make my manager's life way too easy, so it would be inconvenient for him to allow me to move to other responsibilities. Well, good for you, buddy, but I really don't care.
Been turning over updating the resume for a while now.
Currently, I make my manager's life way too easy, so it would be inconvenient for him to allow me to move to other responsibilities.
I've been here and it's miserable.
I have a staff member like this. He's been with us for just over 6 months (his first state civil service job) and I knew he was underplaced pretty much from day one. Had the first real conversation yesterday with him about upward mobility opportunities in my organization. I'll be damned if I let him go any time soon. But I would love to promote him (to another opening in one of my units).
🙄
I have audio of today's Twins game fine on my phone, but running Gameday on my PC says there is no audio feed. W??
well, I got to the audio, now I can't get Gameday.
and Chargois gone -> Dodgers
I’m going to be miffed if they lost Chargois to the Dodgers so they could sign Mike Napoli or some other TR-esque dead cat. As it is, losing Chargois to the Dodgers stinks already; it’s not like they need Minnesota’s help. Given where LA finished last year, I assume this meant he made it nearly all the way through waivers.
There's only so many young hard-throwing relievers the Twins can keep on the 40-man. Chargois made 2 appearances last year and then missed the rest of the season with an elbow impingement, so health certainly is in question.
Dazzle/Provus pointed out that Busenitz has been filling the same role nicely, but yeah, I agree with you.
The Twins just signed Erick Aybar to a minor league deal. In case you were wondering, according to B-Ref, Aybar’s top career comp (and top age-level comp over his last two seasons) is Neifi Perez.
At least he doesn’t eat Chargois’ spot on the 40-man.
I've always wondered how accurate those player comps are.
I wonder how many times Dick will refer to him as a Gold Glove shortstop?
Alex Wimmers appearance with Marlins today. Keeping my eye on that one to see if local boy Brett Graves faces his Cardinals team today.
Jimmy Butler with a non contact knee injury and had to be helped off the court. oofta
Anyone else staying up for Curling?
I'm still here and by the computer.... match starts in 10 minutes.
I blame my office's coffee machine. It broke earlier this week, but it was replaced this afternoon and I had to try it out.
(Ugh... touchscreen. It made to coffee faster but took like 100 times longer to select than just pressing one dang button.)
Bronze medal game for the women's starts at 5am.
Guardless first end here... If both teams stick to this strategy and execute this well, it'll be 0-0 through 9.
I think the last part I was awake for was the end of the 6th.
Things like "Many in USA Curling wished Shuster would just go away and never come back."
"I don't think we've ever seen a team play as poorly as Shuster's did against Norway earlier this week."
"Able to learn lessons from all those losses, all those disappointments."
"unflinchingly honest," or pouty AF?
Scoreboard!
I watched the NBC broadcast this afternoon. They did talk about it a bit, but they weren't as vicious. The viciousness was both 1. along the same lines of what I'd said about Shuster earlier this week (coming from Canucks... was this a serious breech of decorum?), and 2. a set-up to praise him for overcoming the yips and disregarding the naysayers.
I tried to stay up, but was dozing off during the first couple of ends and decided to just record it.
Luckily, I had set the late broadcast to record. Why the hell NBCSN had two different "shows" (one until midnight Pacific, I think, and the other after midnight) I do not understand. Because it split the match almost in half.
I haven't watched the Bronze medal women's game. I'll have to save that for later. I've some things to do before the snow really starts coming down.
Sean signal! Or anyone else with skillz.
I was going to start my taxes, but my optical drive doesn't think there is a disk in it.
When I navigated to the "device manager" dealy, Windoze says I have an optical drive and it is working fine. I can click on the drive icon. It then gives me a pop-up that tells me to insert a disk. When I do so, nothing spins up. I can eject from the file explorer, but no recognition of any disk.
I downloaded and installed HP's hardware test something something app, and so far it has found no problems. It sees the drive but does not give me an option to test it as a component.

dog with a bone, dude, dog with a bone
I watched the 8th and part of the 9th. Had to catch my bus a few stones in the 10th.

ya dead, sanka?
ya man
That double might have made this Viking-proof.
I can't imagine that NBC's announcing during the 9th end was as unflinchingly honest as the CBC's.
