My wife's uncle is a huge Ventures fanatic. He has a huge collection... Japanese 7"s, Lunch boxes, etc.
He also played in a Ventures tribute band, the Rev-Tunes. (I haven't kept up... he still may.)
I didn’t know Nokie had passed.
Despite having played guitar with Buck Owens’ pre-Buckaroos band, Nokie was originally the Ventures’ bassist. He & the Ventures’ original lead guitarist, Bob Bogle, swapped roles in the early Sixties. Bogle played lead on their album covers of “Walk, Don’t Run,” Santo & Johnny’s “Sleepwalk,” and “(Ghost) Riders in the Sky” on their first two albums; Nokie took over lead after that. He left the band in 1968, so he didn’t play lead on “Hawaii Five-O.” Yes, the guy playing lead on most of the band’s biggest tunes was the less-talented guitarist.
As for the video, this has long been one of my favorites. Nokie’s clearly enjoying himself, and Mel Taylor’s drum “battle” with that young fella is pretty spectacular. I wonder if that kid on the other kit ever made a name for himself.
