A big day for Kennys Vargas. The Lookouts lose one run at a time. Miguel Sano hits his first homer of the season for Fort Myers. Bryan Sammons has a fine game for Cedar Rapids. An E-Twins comeback falls short.
ROCHESTER 7, LEHIGH VALLEY 6 IN ROCHESTER
The Red Wings led 3-0, but then trailed 5-3 and 6-5. Cameron Rupp homered in the eighth to tie it and Nick Gordon delivered an RBI single later in the inning for the lead run.
Kennys Vargas was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs. Byron Buxton was 2-for-5 with a double and is batting .214. Rupp was 1-for-3 with a walk and the home run was his second.
Kohl Stewart struck out six in six innings but allowed five runs on ten hits and a walk. Alan Busenitz pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and striking out one. His ERA is 1.23.
TENNESSEE 5, CHATTANOOGA 3 IN TENNESSE
The Smokies scored single runs in the second, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh. The Lookouts closed to 5-3 in the eighth but did not get the tying run on base.
Andy Wilkins was 1-for-3 with a home run, his sixth. He is batting .354. Zander Weil was 1-for-3 with a walk and is batting .301.
Anthony Marzi pitched five innings, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks with no strikeouts.
LAKELAND 11, FORT MYERS 3 IN FORT MYERS
The Flying Tigers led 5-0 through five. In the sixth, a two-run homer by Miguel Sano and a solo shot by Travis Blankenhorn got the Miracle back in the game at 5-3. They got right back out of the game in the seventh, as the first six Lakeland batters reached base in a four-run inning.
Sano was 2-for-4 with a home run and is batting .345. Ben Rortvedt was 2-for-4 with a double. Alex Kirilloff was 2-for-4 and is batting .341. Luis Arraez was 1-for-4 and is batting .320.
Brusdar Graterol had a rough time in his high-A debut, lasting just three innings and allowing five runs on nine hits and a walk. He did strike out three. Adam Bray pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up a walk and striking out one. His ERA is 2.45.
CEDAR RAPIDS 8, BURLINGTON 0 IN BURLINGTON
The Kernels scored five in the third and three in the seventh. Jose Miranda hit a three-run homer in the seventh.
Miranda was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk in addition to the home run, his sixth. Akil Baddoo was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring twice. Royce Lewis was 1-for-5 and is batting .319. Jared Akins was 0-for-4 and is now 0-for-12 in his Class A debut.
Bryan Sammons struck out six in six shutout innings, giving up six hits. His ERA is 2.47. Jose Martinez struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up three hits. Calvin Faucher, whose name is apparently pronounced foo-SHAY, pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit. His ERA is 1.16.
PRINCETON 8, ELIZABETHTON 7 IN PRINCETON
It was 8-2 going to the ninth, but the Twins scored five times to make a game of it. Chris Williams hit a grand slam in the inning. The Twins had the tying run on second when the game ended.
Williams was 3-for-5 with two home runs (his third and fourth) and had five RBIs. Ariel Montesino was 2-for-3 with a walk and is batting .333. Albee Weiss was 2-for-4 with a home run and a double. Alex Robles was 2-for-5 with two doubles and is batting .306. Ryan Jeffers was 0-for-2 with two walks and is batting .415. Yunior Severino was 1-for-5 and is batting .379. Trevor Casanova was 1-for-5 and is batting .357. Ricky De La Torre was 1-for-3 and is batting .333.
Brian Rapp pitched 3.2 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks and striking out two. His ERA is 2.45.
