I've preempted today's guest VJ track for a James Horner song, as I just read
he had diedit would have been his 65th birthday today. I'd appreciate it if someone could add the tag for a candle image please. Here is a nice tribute video:
Added (it pops up if you use the R.I.P. tag).
I guess it's not required -- he didn't just die, it would have been his birthday.
then it's a, uh... birthday candle?
ummm...sure!
I love that deGrom is such a pitiful case that even the Yankees fans give him a standing O.
AMR - any hints for distinguishing types of snipes? I definitely saw some sort of them this morning.
Also, do you think you could confirm a Green Heron from a flight picture where it's all just silhouette? We spooked it and I didn't get a clear look, but there was definitely some rust color.
I can try. I'll check later.
Are you in Minnesota? Then a Snipe is Wilson's Snipe. It was long considered conspecific with the Common Snipe of the old world, but that's been changed.
Common Snipes have shown up in Newfoundland a few times, and... maybe Alaska?
American Woodcocks have a similar flight profile, but unbarred buffy bellies.
Yes in Minnesota, so Wilson's then. Thanks!
At least, I'm pretty sure it was a Snipe, but after looking up Woodcocks I'll have to go check again.
Woodcocks don't have that shorebird preference for wet areas, being a bird of wooded areas. So if it was in a puddle in a field, for example, it was a Snipe.
Woodcocks also have much shorter legs than Snipe (which themselves have pretty short legs for shorebirds).
The back of the Woodcock's head has horizontal stripes while Snipes have the vertical stripes common to stripey-headed birds like sparrows and female Grosbeaks.
Might also want to consider the Dowitchers, but absent good views, you might have to call them "Dowitcher sp." as there's much overlap between Short-billed and Long-billed.
Just found out GBV is coming to Buffalo and playing the venue where Mrs. Buffalo and I were married.
This will be my first time seeing them. Very excited.
I can't think of anyone around here who would be interested in something like that.
So jealous. Looks like I could fly into Buffalo for $416.00 :o)
Buffalo is beautiful in October.
Aaaaa!! We've pulled him back in!!1!
nah, the hitman is a tease.
Let's not get ahead of ourselves.
Heh. I always loved the presnowbound days in b-town.
Primary day at the Nation too: now the Citizens can pick which face they like(?) best.
The only one that initially looked somewhat acceptable to me was the Duck, Duck Grey Duck, but then I thought about how those duck heads on the side are gonna flop around during the race like a dead...duck.
Cripes, they're all terrible.
It's those cheery, dead eyes (6 of them in the case of DDGD).
They should have had a Sinkert while they were at it.
Did they ever say which one was being
retiredtaken out back and shot?Think the Greyduck character could run on it's own, or are the appendages necessary for the gag?
With promotions, always think "worse case scenario"
"As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly."
Speaking of... if we still have water in our field in September, I'm thinking about trying duck hunting for the first time ever. Anyone got any tips?
Don’t invite Dick Cheney.
There is a great episode of Patriot concerning duck hunting and the former vp.
Yeah, it was excellent. I love the sad spy show.
"The birds here are so pretty. Let's blast a few out of the sky."
"I bet that pretty looking thing tastes pretty too!"
Duck hunting is my brother's favorite, and we never did any while growing up. I know a lot of people who duck hunt, and I'm not sure I've ever eaten duck...so they're either eating it all...or none.
The boss's boss (retired) once noted mallards as tasting a little bit swampy.
There's only 3 ducks that taste any good - Mallards, Wood-ducks, and Buffleheads. And domestic.
Any reason in particular for this? We've got lots and lots of Teals currently.
Avoid the fish-eating ducks.
So the Hong Kong market on the best bank of the mississip has these ducks that are red and they are delicious. Funny thing is that I don't need a gun, ammo or aim to have the dude chop up the meat and box it for me.
I've definitely had duck a few times and enjoyed it. You want in if this happens?
Duck, I says.
I've got a pair of jlab Epic wireless earbuds that I really like for workouts and travel, but they been through the wash one too many times* and have an intermittent static short in the connecting wires. While I would really like a noise reduction set for air travel, I'm thinking of just getting an Epic2 (because $$). They have pretty good sound and a solid bass. Anyone have any that earbuds they would recommend?
*that would be twice
I have a couple sets of wireless earbuds and think both are pretty decent.
The one I use most is an LG with the around-the-neck collar, don't remember the model #. The collar is kind of dorky, but I like how it holds everything in place. Sound quality seems adequate, but I'm no audiophile and mostly listen to podcasts. They've held up to daily use for the last couple years with no issues at all.
I bought Anker's SoundBuds Slim to have as a back-up in my desk. Again, they are fine but I tend to listen with just one earbud so I can hear if a co-worker needs my attention or can hear ambient sounds while walking the dog and the lack of a collar allows them to get fairly off-kilter.
I've used both on a plane and had no problem hearing even though neither has active noise canceling. I did jokingly send a link to the wireless Bose noise canceling earbuds on sale at Best Buy, saying I need them for my new job. I just can't drop that kind of money on headphones though.
I had to go with Lucy because of how inappropriately violent it is.
The cheese could be flowing out the back like a cape. Or massive head wound.
Those are undeniably bite marks, so massive head trauma for sure. It's a good thing the burger wasn't cooked medium rare or less.

I think the first one should be called "Bobbert".
The Mayor of SBGville not exactly in sync with the tourism bureau.
I should note that the mayor was re-elected to his third consecutive term, but fourth overall. He was first elected mayor at the age of 26 and had to resign when he was working out of state for 10 months at a time. I'm quite plugged into the mayor's movements, as you may know.
His "movements" you say?
Also, 52 votes, $52 million project. Coincidence?
go back to shuffling papers!

Fire department training opportunity?
Returned from vacation a few hours ago. Everything put away, Jeep cleaned inside and out (cannot believe how many bugs were plastered to the front of our Jeep). On our last full day in Glacier, we drove the Going to the Sun Road. It was the most beautiful and terrifying driving experience of my life. I have driven mountains all over the country and have never truly been awed or overly impressed. Until now. That GTTS road must be experienced to truly get the vastness and beauty of the mountains. No pictures or videos (which I extensively researched) does it justice. Unfortunately, on our way up we say a small forest fire start up, and by the time we got back down the mountain it was much bigger. By Monday afternoon it was a disaster. Now, the entire West Glacier park is closed. Glad we saw everything we wanted to see before we left, but I am saddened that a ton of tourists are heading that way and will miss out, and the park lost a few historic buildings.
Other highlights:
Bowman Lake in the North West section of the park. Hard to get to. One lane winding gravel road up and down the mountain. Worth it. So beautiful and serene. Wish we brought the kayaks with. Pole Bridge Mercantile on the way up was a trip back in time. Pretty cool.
Whitewater rafting. It was fun and entertaining. A bit tame for my tastes, but a good time and very beautiful.
Tried a hike with my kids. They failed to tell us it was a 3800 ft vertical climb over 6.6 miles to the targeted chalet. Wife and I quit after and hour and went back down to the lodge for drinks and lunch. Kids came back down 6 hours later. They are 17 and 19 and both fit and outdoors savvy, but I was getting a bit worried.
The drive out through NoDak and Montana was very cool. Lots of cool landscapes once you get past Jamestown or so. Fun trip that we will do again in a few years to catch the things we missed (like wildlife... all we saw were squirrels, chipmunks).
+1
My wife insisted being in control (driving) GTTS road. We stopped at the midway point for her to cry. (And also to get out and hike around by the visitor’s center.)
It was incredibly beautiful. We went on one hike with our young children that was fairy-tale quiet. Too quiet. After 15 minutes our bear-fear made us walk it back to the car. (We also did a few other hikes. Only saw a black bear from the car. Grizzlies roaming in the distance when at the visitors center - though I think they went through the parking lot while we were away on our hike.)
We also went up to Banff. Good lord, beauty. I could probably go up to that area every year. There are 3-4 national parks in the area and 1 or 2 provincial parks. Just crazy.
Oh, and it was fire season. We got into the parks, but views were smoky there and _especially_ at Flathead Lake on the way up. We also drove next to the Rockies from Glacier up to Calgary and couldn’t see the mountains for the whole drive.
Yeah, I drove one way, and honestly my 19 year old son drove back as I was a mess. Surprisingly, it was easier being a passenger than the driver.
