  1. Of the 13 people still alive for the NLCS, five picked LA to win and eight picked Milwaukee. For the ALCS, 18 are still alive. Ten picked Houston and eight picked Boston.

If I've done the math right, then if LA wins the World Series, hj wins. If Milwaukee wins the World Series, then it depends on who they beat. If it's Boston, DG wins; if it's Houston, we have a two-way tie between spooky and Rowsdowser. If Houston wins the World Series, it also depends on who wins the NLCS. If it's LA, I win with a perfect bracket; if it's Milwaukee then nibbish wins. Same thing if Houston wins. If Milwaukee wins the NLCS then punman wins and it's cheaptoy if LA wins the NLCS.

This feels a lot more competitive than last season. The division series were rather boring but it meant more people have a chance with the LCS and World Series.

    1. Presented another way.

  2. For those going to Hold Steady tomorrow:

I'll be the white guy with a beard wearing a hat and drinking a craft beer. You can't miss me!

    1. I'm so excited. Should be a great day for it. I tried to get tickets to one of their Sunday shows but missed out. $295 on stubhub now, if any are even left.

  3. PSA re Book Club: Now that we've completed one book, there is iteration that I think should happen. When initially thinking about it I didn't consider allowing time for conversations between books. So what I'm thinking is moving to a Read one month, Discuss the next. While reading we take polls for the next book. The benefits include more talk time and a longer period for people to read the next book before discussing it. It also makes it easier for people to utilize the library system. So for example we read Maltese Falcon in Sept. and discuss during Oct. We'll discuss the next book in December, so you'd have 60 days to read Wintering.

    Thoughts?

    1. “Read one month/discuss the next” strikes me as a good arrangement. I think discussion was a bit muted for Maltese Falcon because folks don’t want to spoil something, differing demands on our time means we’re reading at different paces, etc.

    2. I quickly burned through Maltese F., Old Man's War, and The Plover with Berlin trip and Minny week.

Don't remember seeing anything about Wintering.

Much raving about MF but it was minimalist-cigarette-noir. Dumb ending. Old Man's War was good in the beginning, then went into turbo-drive (another war/another day) and The Plover was OK but weird - I enjoyed it but wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

  4. I had something kind of special happen last night. I'm not sure I'll be able to explain it adequately, but I'm going to try.

Our local girls volleyball team has a tradition. When they go out for the pre-game introductions, they carry rolled-up t-shirts with them. The t-shirts are sponsored by local business. As each player is announced, they toss a t-shirt to someone in the crowd. It's considered kind of an honor to get one. They usually go to a relative (parent, grandparent, sibling, etc.), a boyfriend, a best friend, or occasionally a special teacher or something. I've never seen one go to a pastor.

Until last night. A pastor got one last night. Me. One of the girls, a girl who had been in my confirmation class a couple of years ago, chose to throw a t-shirt to me.

Maybe that doesn't seem like much of a deal. Maybe it even sounds silly. But it meant a lot to me. As a pastor, you always hope you're making an impact on someone's life, especially the life of a young person. But most of the time, you don't really know. You plug away, doing you're best, and hope and pray that God will use it somehow. So to have this happen told me that at least once, I must have done something right. I'm going to treasure that t-shirt, and will always appreciate the moment.

    1. Awesome. External validation is so important but so rare. I always cherish these kinds of experiences.

    1. Maybe a move is coming? Or, maybe they knew they were going to do it anyway and decided they might as well do it now to give him more time to try to catch on with another club.

  5. After running around in circles for far far too long, we successfully closed on our house today.

Much work remains to be done, but I feel so much relief.
