  1. Pretty disappointed that HGTV isn't covering the Rose Bowl Parade this year. Their lack of commercials and actual focus on the floats and bands was a refreshing change from the typical network TV parade coverage.

    1. I'm told that RFD TV will have similar coverage to what HGTV used to have, if that channel is an option for you.

          1. better Spirit than US StratCom.

"TimesSquare tradition rings in the #NewYear by dropping the big ball...if ever needed, we are #ready to drop something much, much bigger," read the now-deleted tweet from Stratcom's official account.

  2. The honor of Rose Queen will go to Louise Deser Siskel, a senior at Sequoyah High School in Pasadena who is set to attend the University of Chicago in the fall.

Siskel, who admits that she first applied for Rose Queen “as a lark…to get the two complimentary tickets to the Royal Ball that came with applying,” beat out hundreds of other applicants. She is the first Rose Queen in history to be Jewish, the first to wear glasses on the float, and the first member of the LGBTQ community.

“The 2019 Royal Court is one of the most diverse in the tournament’s history,” she said. “We are of many different religious, racial and socioeconomic backgrounds. Personally, I am happy to be the first Rose Queen to wear glasses on the float (even though they clash with the crown), and the first Rose Queen to talk about being Jewish. "

  3. I have to admit, I am not unhappy to see 2018 out the door. Over the course of the year I got laid off when my business unit got sold, broke my foot, and had another root canal. I had hernia surgery at the end of August and I've been dealing with lingering groin pain ever since (they don't tell you about that possibility before the surgery). I lost two aunts and a cousin, and April marked the ten year anniversary of my father's death. There was a few bright spots in the year, to be sure, but I'm ready for a new one. And I don't care if the door hits 2018 in the ass on the way out.

  4. I've seen numerous posts on FB of people complaining of what went wrong in 2018 and hoping for a better '19, but I can't complain since I have 2 cousins that lived in Paradise when the Camp Fire basically burned down the town on Nov. 8. One of my cousins, Mary, had her home completely destroyed, but she, her husband and their grandson that they are raising all got out safely. My other cousin, Randy, also got out and his home is still standing, but he and his family have not been able to return because they still don't have any utilities and the house needs to be professionally cleaned and it may be a while before they can return. Also when they do, they will basically be living in a ghost town. Mary's only complaint has been not being with her grandson because he is living with friends so he can go to a new school. Fortunately, they will be closing on a new house near his new school this month.
