New MLB rules announced for the 2020 season. Main changes:
- 3 batter minimum for pitchers
- Two-way player designation (think Ohtani)
- 26-man roster (and smaller September call up rosters)
- Pitchers back to 15-day IL stints
- Managers have 20 seconds instead of 30 to challenge.
Looks to me like they fixed a bunch of stuff that wasn't broken. I will say, though, that the three-batter minimum could make for some interesting strategy choices.
One could say that Tony LaRussa broke the reliever role many years ago and this is putting a bandaid on it.
LaRussa started doing relievers for one inning at a time and started doing setup men in front of a closer, who would only pitch the ninth. This is the Francona Rule.
I think this is a fair assessment.
Hold Steady, Rolling Stones, and Jason Isbell presales today. The password is THECURRENT. I would definitely be on the site at 10:00a if you want those Hold Steady tix.
