Another crushing postseason game. Drown your sorrows with seven other games.
Lance McCullers Jr.
vs
José Berríos
Lineup:
1. Luis Arraez, 2B
2. Max Kapler, CF
3. Nelson Cruz, DH
4. Eddie Rosario, LF
5. Miguel Sanó, 1B
6. Alex Kirilloff, RF
7. Jorge Polanco, SS
8. Marwin Gonzalez, 3B
9. Ryan Jeffers, C
No Buxton.
So...Twins could be eliminated before StL even begins their first postseason game?
I hate anything shorter than a 7-game series for postseason baseball, except maybe wild card play-in games.
I hope José’s curveball’s falling off the table and his sinker’s darting.
I hope Jorge is extra motivated.
I hope Jeffers gets all four (or more) at-bats.
I hope Kirilloff is able to contribute to a Twins win.
I hope the boom sticks show and the assbats go.
Were you all aware that the Twins have lost 17 straight playoff games? This feels notable. Why is ESPN not talking about it. At all?
I wonder what the odds a team could lose 17 straight playoff games would be...
like 100-1 or something i bet.
I give them a pass on this -- it's crazy, it's a national broadcast, they pretty much have to lead with it.
Karl Ravich going with the "Berry-ohs" pronunciation.
Karl Ravech is not a good play-by-play guy, in my opinion, but this is inexcusable. Berrios has been in the big leagues five years and made two all-star teams. A professional broadcaster, even a not-very-good one, should at least know how to pronounce his name.
A full 6 innings of this ding dong saying "BERRY Ose" is going to drive me nuts. Especially with Perez subtly pronouncing it right every chance he gets.
I've never heard it said out loud, but judging from the accent I'm guessing it's closer to /buh-REE-ohs/
yes
Jeffers needs to catch the full game. He's the best hitting catcher at the moment (sorry, Sauce :(), and his framing ability is miles beyond Garver and Avila.
Sidebar is messed up for me, two months old
Yep.
I'm loving the randomness.
On this reload, I had a split second panic I was missing an Initial Game.
No need to worry about that - I got all the answers sown up. 😉
Sorry, I took your answers.
It's going backwards through the site's 373k letters. Like a reverse montage.
That was your pitch Eddie
Welcome to the Show, kid.
Well this is a fun first major league at bat
Ha, wow. This is something else.
Deja vu
Well, this feels familiar.
I had to get here via the dashboard. So far only me, and eschapp's empty room on Zoom
So great - load the bases and a "great story" of a player who has no business playing in the postseason comes up to bat and leave everyone on base to end the inning. Awesome Twins baseball.
If the Twins had this thought in the back of their minds, why didn't they bring up Kirilloff instead of Wade two weeks ago? Just to get the jitters out of the way.
That's not a bad idea, but I assume the Twins were hoping Wade would mostly be sitting on the bench and that Cave might heat up in September and AK wouldn't be necessary for this situation. Cave's power came around in September, but 20:3 SO:BB and just a .308 OBP.
Cave's been pretty abysmal hitting this season and the team struggled to score runs yesterday. I'm not that against that lineup decision.
I would hate to see the season end on a pathetic diving attempt by Jake Cave and the Bad D. That storyline was already used in 2006.
Yeah...that was a bad day.
Wow, slick fielding Jose!
Nice, Berry-Ohs.
nice -- like that quick-on/quick-off the field
Way to make him work there, Polanco.
What pitch is Marwin ever waiting for when we just watches the meat go by?
He's waiting to hear the trash can
Probably trying to avoid a quick inning by taking a pitch or two. Leadoff man Polanco did him no favors by chasing pitch for a first-pitch out.
Buh-REE-os that time, but I bet it's a one-off
I think someone probably told him that he was sounding like an idiot.
like more of an idiot
At least Ravech seems like he wants to be there. Kurkijan has been so cranky, it's been super annoying.
A crooked inning would be amazing right about now.
Yeah, that would ratchet up the Win Probability nicely
They are doing player interviews during the game during an elimination game.
this is so dumb
That's been every game Ravech has broadcast this year. It's like he wants to use the game as a backdrop for a talk show rather than do actual play-by-play of the game.
Pretty sure that's an ESPN decision, not a Ravech decision. Tough crowd today.
That may be--I would have no way to know--but it seems to happen a lot more in Ravech's games than it does in other broadcasters' games.
It's a reasonable assumption that the play-by-play announcer is not the director of the broadcast and he has to take instructions from his management just like most of us do.
Again, I not arguing with you. I'm just saying it happens more in Ravech's games. Maybe they feel interviews are his strength and are trying to play to it or something.
Down 1-0
GOSO
we should be able to tie it at least!
(that's probably about it though.)
Not here
As my brother just texted, just 1 run — probably 2 more than the ‘stros need.
That’s actually pretty damn hilarious. I wish it wasn’t our guys.
of course a bleeder through the INF nets a run.
If only Houston had to call up a rookie to make his MLB debut to bat with 2 outs and RISP instead of a guy in the top 10 for RBI this season.
The pen is active in the
3rd4th. One run seems insurmountable. Blarf.4th, but....yeah
You beat me to it.
It really is the absolute dearth of runs in the postseason that is so disheartening. Do the Twins change their approach somehow? Are they just all pressing so much? I don't understand it.
I thought it was the pinstripes the Yankees wear. Now it’s clear that it’s just the futility of being Minnesotan.
It's almost like it's not entirely Joe Mauer's fault
But he was weighed down by his wallet all those years.
No score for Cincinnati-Atlanta either.
You have to wonder about it, but in this series at least, the Twins improved on their K rate and BB rate from the regular season. So many pop-ups, though.
Sano didn't strike out!!!!!!!! Moral victories.
The body language from Cruz, Rosario, and Sano right now ... is not ideal.
The no hitter is gone. Moral victories stacking up.
Tim Kirkjian doesn't even realize he shouldn't be giggling about Doucheira walk-off playoff homeruns today.
Cubs-Marlins on the networks right now. I can't decide which team I hate less. As much as I dislike Jetes, the Ricketts family is just plain evil.
Donaldson is missed
Watching the body language of these players in reacting to bad plays - I am convinced they feel the weight of this losing streak and its affecting their play.
At a certain point you'd think it'd just be "well, there's nothing left to lose," and the pressure would go away.
I do believe that the floodgates will open once a game is won whether that is today or in a future post season.
I'm turning 40 tomorrow. Not much time left!
#itgetsbetter
That was likely more exciting than it needed to be.
At least Kirilloff seems to be an upgrade over Cave on defense.
Dizzle is upset about taking Berrios out. Lots of old man noises coming out of the dazzle man.
He's absolutely correct. The more you go to the bullpen, the more likely you are to find a guy who doesn't have it that day. Berrios also looks really good.
I think 3rd time through the order is the best justification for taking him out, but he has been looking good. Would be nice to just score 20 runs and make it irrelevant.
Ticker said that the A’s have tied a team record with six straight postseason losses. Poor bastards.
former Twins minor league great Brooks Raley
maybe he has some Twins playoff stench on him just from being on a roster years and years ago and we can score a billion runs.
Is blue having a bad day at the office? Lots of complaining from batters.
I feel like the corners have been kind of inconsistent, but partly there have been a lot of close calls so I can't say he's been actively bad.
Take all the time you need, blue.
Ugh. Why send the runner? Was it even close?
Not close enough.
Close, but only because of a poor relay throw. A good throw and he's out by a mile.
Sort of? But only because of a throw that was up the line a bit.
That was a "the next batter is a lefty" send.
And Rosario at that. Followed by Sanó. I'm okay with the send. I think we overestimate how likely Arraez would have scored otherwise.
100%
At this point, I'd try to send the batter home on a single.
Totally agreed. If you send him, you have maybe a 50% chance. If you don't, I think you have about a 20% chance.
The throw to the relay man was pretty crap, and I think that played a big part in the decision to send him.
it was a wide throw so the play was closer than it should have been.
I'm on radio, so I don't know. Obviously if he had no chance, it's a bad decision. But given how few big hits the Twins have gotten, I can't blame the third base coach for taking a gamble.
So, from the other comments, sounds like pretty much no chance. Well, at least we won't get shut out!
Yup. We got our one run for the day.
TV guys are harping on Arraez allegedly not cutting the corner tight enough. Eh.
20/20 hindsight, but I would have taken my chances with Eddie.
I really disagree with the characterization of no chance at all. When he was being sent home, the throw to the relay man was just about to take a short hop. The relay man both handled the short hop perfectly and made an incredibly quick release to get rid of the ball. It was a reasonable chance to take to get the go-ahead run when runs have been scarce.
with so few chances at runs, you get a runner that close to home you gotta go for it
And even for pro players, there are a lot of ways to screw up a relay throw to the plate -- two throws that need to be quick enough AND accurate enough, two catches, plus you need to apply the tag.
To me it was close enough that he had a better or roughly even chance to score by getting sent home versus the 20-30% chance that Rosario would drive him home.
He didn't even touch the plate. I know you get two challenges, but there's no point to this.
Yup.
Another disappointing inning.
Blue has been pretty inconsistent on balls and strikes, too.
Yup, couldn't get too upset about strike three to Jeffers on what should have been ball four because he should have been rung up earlier. Strike three to Kepler, though, was just filthy.
I said the same to hj on the zoom call; he struck out on a ball, but he got a gift ball earlier in the AB
ESPN showed it as an official review.
Ah. Busy with work and on the radio they were saying something about how managers get two challenges. Comment retracted.
I've been listening more on the radio this year--it can be really challenging to follow that way at times.
Based on last year and this, Rocco seems to have a quicker hook in the playoffs.
No score through 12 innings for the NL so far.
So do they pull Stashak after one inning, too?
They will if we get a rain delay.
go Swizzlestick!
Rosario is hitting a donger here
He’s certainly hitting the shower.
I really feel like all it would take is a couple more runs for the Twins to win. I just don't have a lot of confidence in the Twins' ability to get a couple more runs.
Well you could see that one coming.
For fuck’s sake
This ump sucks.
Ump show
F*&^ you, blue. Consider getting some calls correct.
Sick of these thin-skinned umpires.
C'mon, Sano. That was BBQ chicken.
ump show
also assbats
So. Many. Popups.
?
need to fix that launch angle, rook
Rosario shouldn't have been thrown out, obviously.
That being said, the ump was clearly in no mood to be told the truth about his umpiring skills as of the previous pitch. Gotta bite your tongue there.
Rain coming down hard now.
Knock on would, but Sleestak Mark II has been really good.
That one's on you, chief
Well, shit.
Sorry for opening my mouth.
Maybe if you had knocked on wood instead.
It seemed appropriate to leave it that way.
So close.
That should do ‘er.
Berrios could have done that.
I'm blaming Rosario
Now we get the ESPN guys harping on "postseason experience."
Ugh.
Most of the Twins players have postseason experience. It just hasn't been a very pleasant experience.
The thing that strikes me about most of these playoff games is how much they are just like normal regular season games, *especially* with no fans.
That really didn’t look like it was going out.
It is clear blue skies in Maple Grove, never rained.
Take a look at the radar right now, it's really weird.
So. Many. Popups.
This sucks, guys.
Not even close. What was the 1b ump looking at?
Apparently the same thing he was looking at on the next play.
Robot. Umps.
Timmons is just guessing over there.
Out again...
Ha! man, monkey show at first
Good God, Timmons blows two calls in the same inning.
Not even just the same inning, but back-to-back plays, both called safe instead of out (when IF hits are super rare in general.) Gotta love the human element!
That is some severe incompetence.
This applies equally to the umpiring and the Twins batting.
😂
Metaphors: sunny on the field, pouring in the on deck circle
Yet. Another. Popup.
This offense is so trash right now.
He's going to need to put this one over the fence.
Buxton in to run. Interesting. Can he steal home?
Not excited to bring in Bux. If he's not well enough to play, why PR with him?
I'd rather lose and have him come back healthy next year.
The only thing that would truly make sense to me is that maybe he picked up a hand injury.
It would affect the pitcher more if the baserunner is capable of stealing. But, the Twins have to actually do something at the plate.
Cave chased ball four.
dammit JC
Buxton's ability to not get picked off first base is AMAZING.
what a fucking joke this team has been today.
Ha spoke too soon. You just have to laugh at this point.
That was a high quality swing there by Cave.
OFFS.
Pretty much out of words at this point.
'bout right.
setting up for the Kiriloff walkoff
Well, that was a great use of Buxton. This is turning into a class a-1 clown show.
So is this too similar to Carlos Gomez (fastest runner) getting caught off the bases, or is this truly a new storyline?
Kurkijan should just retire if he's so disappointed in the game, some of us still want to enjoy this fer cryin' out loud.
A zero out appearance by Rogers? Man, I thought the pickoff was the cherry on top.
This was obviously not meant to go here. Whatever.
Tim Kirkjian is turning into John Smoltz. All he does is complain.
Personally, I think Smoltz is at least insightful at times. Kurkjian has nothing of value to add, frankly.
I think the new storyline is Sano homering to tie the game (with Buxton no longer on base), and then the Twins losing in extras when whomever pinch hits for Buxton comes up with runners on base and fails.
more optimistic than me. I'm predicting two pop-ups and a called strike three in the 9th
This seems painful enough to be plausible.
My vote would be Rogers gives up a run and then Sanó's home run doesn't tie it.
ooo, there we go
Yeah, I have no confidence in Rogers keeping this a one run game.
And there you go.
Can’t wait for Pressly to come in and dagger the folks who dealt him.
Buxton didn't even bail out Sano from a particularly bad count, but maybe Sano can get ahead in the count early in the 9th. That's about the only silver lining you can take from that.
I'm regretting that the Twins didn't play the Yankees. I wouldn't have watched those games.
Correction - you wouldn't have watched them in prime time!
This got a gallows chuckle out of me.
GOSO.
I think I am most bothered by the fact that despite being in Las Vegas - I had enough belief in this team hosting these games to not fund my Christmas by betting against them like I did last year.
I smiled.
BABIP 1.000
A zero out appearance by Rogers? Man, I thought the pickoff was the cherry on top.
✅ Rogers gives up a run.
☐ Home run in bottom of the ninth.
not here
It could be worse. We could also root for the Vikings and Wolves and...
We should have jumped ship to the Lynx.
AN OUT!!!
Quality rundown execution, TBH.
High point of the game for me was that Berrios 1-3 -- damn fine play.
Well, Duffey gets a gold star
To bad we couldn't have gone from Berrios to Duffey and skipped everything in between.
Too bad we can't score enough runs that our pitchers aren't always under a magnifying glass.
Seven runs over two games is pretty good. AL averaged 4.58 runs per game.
At at least a couple of those runs go on the defense rather than the pitching, by my reckoning.
Kiriloff has been good today. Whatever went wrong today, I don't put it on him.
hey, how many games did the Twins win in the regular season when they scored 1 run?
It happened once. They lost 3-1.
Last year it happened 10 times and they won once.
Well, I called the strikeout looking to end it
Kill the sport with fire
Meanwhile, still zero runs in Atlanta.
I feel like pure shit.
2020 sucks
If you want to stretch for a silver lining, at least we won't have the will-they-won't-they regarding a white house visit.
Silver lining part 2. A 3 game series shortened the pain to 2 days versus more.
Whelp, go Rays!
Yep. Go Rays. Go Kershaw. Go Tatis. Go Votto.
Yes to all of that.
I also like these White Sox. I know. It doesn’t thrill me either.
Yeah, I can get behind that sentiment.
oh, and go Vlad
I love Vladito
Go non-Yankees!
A Rays/Dodgers series where Kershaw pitches really well is my ideal now.
Rays/Padres bandwagon here.
Same
Oakland/Padres.
I could live with that as my second choice.
But we're going to get Yankees/Cardinals.
The Marlins are going to win the World Series. Maybe an all-Florida World Series to absolutely destroy TV ratings.
Had to pop out in the 7th. What'd I miss?
The Baseball Gods smoting out favorite team.
I just realized I made an unintentional pun for this game.
Appropriately, a lot of pop outs.
Yeah, that.
So glad work was too busy for me to watch more than a handful of at bats. Was going to burn the Twins tie I showed on the book of face, but... I got nothing. I am empty inside.
I've come to the conclusion that this is all Manford's fault. I have to say, Baseball is special in that they could find someone worse than Selig as commish.
60 game covid seasons dont count.
Every single team that has played at least one playoff game since the Twins last won a playoff game (all Major League teams besides the Mariners) has won at least one playoff game. That includes the Marlins, who have only played one playoff game during that time.
Yeah, it's been pretty rough.
If you're going to suck, you might as well make history while doing it.
Might as well go for the Consecutive Postseason Series Loss record while we're at it.
Better to lose every postseason game or never have a chance to play in the postseason?
Based on last season, I would rather they lost in the postseason.
Yeah, the last two seasons have been more enjoyable than 2011-2014.
Can we choose "better to lose every postseason game" if we can also not have announcers mention it every playoff inning?
