Jenny Lewis has gotten so much praise and attention over the years, and, on the strength of Rilo Kiley, rightfully so. But I never really liked all that much of her solo work, despite giving it plenty of chances. It seemed like she was skating by on reputation. I very much enjoy a lot of her latest album though. It definitely wasn't an instant hit for me, but it seems to have grown in depth.
I especially dig how this live performance captures the cavernous sound of the album version.
I was sad to see her middle name wasn't Leigh.
This is a really good album
Hmm...I’ve loved most of her solo work!
I thought the first one, with the Watson Twins, was okay, but nothing special. The others have just been misses for me, with a couple singles as exceptions (and usually not the songs that get the most attention).
Your thoughts on how this one compares?
Sorry, I don't have any deep thoughts. I just like listening to her music, but at this point it has become music that is with me when I, say, do woodworking in the garage. It's part of the "Working in the Garage" playlist. It's part of the fabric of my year.
I don't really have a guidepost for comparison between albums, which probably says that for me all of the albums kind of run together as similar. I'm sure it's not actually true that they are similar, but that's how it is in my brain.
Anyway, none of that is a glowing endorsement!
All I have is Acid Tongue and a few Rilo songs. Not sure why RK never clicked for me, but I dig that solo album (minus Elvis Costello's contribution).
Check out On The Line. I really do think it is her best solo work.
I like Acid Tongue and the Elvis Costello song is what brought me to it.
