January 28, 2021: Through The Ages

What's one strange, genetic echo has that reoccurred in your family throughout the years? For example, music or performing arts has been a common theme for at least four generations in my family, and I don't even know far beyond that specific line.

  1. Hmm... Thought the title was going to refer to the board game. Guess that's just where my brain is today.

  2. Reusse threw some shade at Top Jimmy in his column welcoming LEN3 to the columnist brotherhood.

    1. I thought he threw some props at Souhan for his article about Rubio.

Also Souhan on Twitter has been less sufferable lately. Non sports, he's obviously not a big fan of Trump, and right wing political positions in general. Once I responded to a tweet of his that said "Woke Souhan is much better than Joke Souhan." He didn't respond,

      1. Yes, he praised the Rubio article, but he had the zinger about "bilateral leg weakness" being for the lazy

  3. The Wall Street drama that started (and continues) with GameStop is fascinating to me. As of this morning, Robinhood, which seems to be the app of choice for the Redditors/Common Man for trading, has restricted nearly all of the stocks targeted. And they're being super aggressive blocking any target that pops up on Reddit and shows increased purchasing (the crypto currency Dogecoin just got de-listed for purchase).

I made a list of stocks a couple nights ago and all of them were up 40-200% yesterday, unfortunately I did not buy any of them before that increase...

But now none are available through Robinhood and all but GameStop and Koss (WTF?) are falling, presumably because the Redditors are in between stock market apps. It isn't surprising to see financial firms try to close the gate on this unruly mob of investors, guess they think the free market can get a little out of hand.

    1. "app of choice for the Redditors/Common Man for trading" ha.

I do think this is interesting. Marc Cuban has some stuff going around about his CNBC comments too that is ... something.

    2. Update: It is now really ugly, GameStop is down $100-150 today (depending on the minute) as "retail investors" remain locked out from a lot of apps.

    3. My friends are all talking about it, but the whole thing is confusing and dumb to me. That said, apparently its going up again?

    4. The exposure of how corrupt Wall Street is has been fascinating to me . I mean, I know its rotten at its core, but the onion layers of how things are manipulated has been eye opening.

    5. Does anybody really think Robin Hood is free? Look at how they make money to see what is really going on.

    6. I also think it is funny that people are arguing that Robin Hood manipulating the stock market by not letting them manipulate the stock market.

    7. The brokerage intervention exposes how free the free market really is. I’m suspecting that there will suddenly be a large number of Republicans interested in stock market regulation.

      1. The rules we have in place are adequate. The problem is that we have gutted the enforcement.

    8. Years back, I read an article predicting this type of F'U to the hedge fund shenanigans, but can't seem to find it now. It was probably on The Simpsons.

    9. Ironic that a company called Robinhood has a problem with the common man taking from the rich...

  4. I got my second COVID shot this morning. Two hours later, no ill effects. I'll let you know if that changes.

    1. Woot! My dad got his first shot on Monday, which is a big relief to me, no ill effects either. Now my mom is trying to somehow get vaccinated herself.

    2. Congrats, Padre!

The response curve on at least the Pfizer vaccine seems to indicate that the risk of infection bends down very quickly after about a week from the first injection. The second one seems to take the protection level from ~90 percent to ~95 percent.

I'm just excited that shots are being administered.

      1. and, I will add, administration is still a nightmare.

One of my wife's colleagues is 81, with some health conditions and the caregiver for her husband, who has serious health issues. She was told by her provider that BECAUSE she didn't have a primary-care physician with them, she would have to first sign up for a PCP before she could even be scheduled for an injection.

I mean, WTAF? Don't give me that bureaucratic bullshit. Get her vaccinated.

        1. Do I have a primary care physician? I don't know. That has been one of my gripes about those clinging to the image of some kind of intimate health care system with a personal relationship between doctors and patients. I know I am fortunate to not be at a phase of life and health condition where such a thing is necessary, but that certainly hasn't been my experience. I get whoever I get. My kids have a physician who is almost impossible to go see with any urgency.

Alternately to bS's anecdote, I love seeing the stories like this one where the vaccine is being considered so precious that they'll stick anyone they can find to prevent the loss of a dose.

            1. Agreed. I had a great doc in Minny for many years. He was a war doc, wore dress shoes (not trainers), a shirt and tie (not scrubs), and he didn't pander me with unnecessary prescriptions.

I once came back from Thailand after a two-week stint, and was feeling really jet-lagged/crappy after 7 days. I called him to ask about it.

Me: Jeez doc. You'd think any jet lag would have subsided by now after a full week.
              He: Aw. Suck it up.

I was fine soon after that.

            2. Her husband gets his coverage from the VA. She has been healthy as a horse her whole life and has only utilized PA services. I don't know how she failed to establish a primary, but whatevs.

Regardless, give her an effing vaccine. Worry about the primary later.

  5. Going with my paternal grandfather's branch, there are more lefties than righties in my family tree, a tradition that Newbish continues (and is gatekeeper for, apparently, as he told me that I wasn't "actually" a lefty this summer, because I golf right handed).

    1. Oy, bit of a purist. I only bat left, probably best to not apply for membership in his club!

      1. I drink left-handed, so I can play darts/bags/etc.

I can (or at least could at one point) slap singles left handed

        1. I used to play a lot of doubles tennis (am right handed), and developed this bad habit of switching my racket to my left hand for short shots at the net. Turns out I got pretty good at it (drop-shot is a killer).

            1. I do most fine-motor stuff left handed (writing, close tool work, anything that requires precision) and gross motor strength stuff right-handed. Until I ruined my right shoulder, I threw right-handed, bowled right-handed and shot (basketball and firearms) right handed, although I am left-eye dominant. I did teach myself how to switch hit in jr high, but never had the guts to hit lefty in a game. (I did switch hit in the mammoth OTL-style competitions my best friend and I had all summer long every year from about 5th through 9th grades. Fast pitch with a tennis ball. You can get crazy breaks with a worn tennis ball).

              1. I'm almost totally left handed, but I have some things I do right handed: shooting pool or a gun and using a scissors. When I was a little kid, they gave me a lefty scissors. Couldn't use it. Also, I kick right footed. Everything else is left handed.

    2. I do everything right handed (except shoot pool), but I'm left eye dominant. It can be frustrating.

Also, left handed bowlers are cheaters.

      1. A (long) while ago, wanting to get back into duck-hunting, I bought a Remington Wingmaster 870, and started to go to Forest Lake gun club to shoot trap/skeet.

Sucking at this, I got a guy (Otis) to go out with me for some tips.

He first did a trick to determine eye dominance - so my left eye is dominant - bad deal for right-handed shooters. He puts a piece of Scotch tape over the center of my left glasses lens to force me to use my right eye. We go out to the skeet range.

        Me: Pull!
        (Boom!)
        He: You missed it!
No advice from Otis on whether I'm leading or trailing the clay pigeon. This repeats again and again. My bad.

  6. Chicken Sandwich

Let the chicken sandwich wars begin! I've been eyeing all of the chicken sandwich ads and thinking I needed to try them out.

I haven't yet tried any of them - Popeyes, ChickFilA, Wendy's, MacnDons, KFC, DQ, Church's.

But first, I had to make my own:
    - Chicken Breast cut into strips, marinated for a couple hours in buttermilk, hot sauce, paprika and salt.
    - Make sauce from Sir Kensington's mayonnaise, paprika, hot sauce.
    - Dredge the chix in flour/paprika/garlic salt/salt/pepper mixto.
    - Heat a non-stick skillet with canola oil at med-high. Drop a bead of water to make sure the oil is hot enough. You'll know.
    - Fry both sides till brown, only turning over once.
    - Toast brioche buns till you get to the edge of crunch.
    - Assemble the sandwich with micro greens, hamburger pickles, and special sauce.

      1. It's definitely top of my list.

I tried Freddy's spicy chicken sandwich today and it was surprisingly good. My wife's been a fan of the regular chicken sandwich there for a while and I finally gave in to trying it instead of a double cheeseburger. It isn't up there with Popeye's or Chick-Fil-A's spicy sandwiches, but definitely above average.

Does anyone else listen to The Doughboys podcast? They rank the Wendy's spicy chicken sandwich way up there, but we never end up at a Wendy's so I'm going out of my way to try it sometime soon.

          1. I made a lot of the non-spicy Wendy's chix when I worked there in 1981-2. (Before there was a spicy). Oil-filled pressure cooker, IIRC.

In those days, you could get the chix sandwich dressed just like a burger.

            1. OK - just did a search for Popeyes in H'istan. Turns out there's a Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen 1.9mi away on Albany Ave. in the North End. Geographically close but ethnically far away.

So girding my loins for the chix sammi war and plan to sidle over there (maybe this weekend). I'll be posting dispatches from the front line.

              1. While you're there I suggest getting the red beans and rice but ask for the dirty rice instead of white rice. Oh, just order the whole side board and plan to take a nap.

  7. Fortunately, our power came back on this afternoon at around 1:30, after being out for ~36 hours.

Unfortunately, it went back out at 3:00. No estimate on when it will be back.

    1. came back on around 8:30 pm last night, so I won't have to throw out the mess of chicken that I bought yesterday, replacing the mess of chicken that I had to throw out.

  8. FYI, Citizen Kane is on TCM tomorrow evening in case you haven't been spoilered by the Bossman

      1. First scene of the movie. Kane lies in bed, alone in a room. Says Rosebud. Croaks. But, somehow everyone knows what his dying word was. Huh.
