Fall songs have a sense of security, of having achieved something, of satisfaction, of having looked back at the work you've done. And this song - despite all the "when we arrive" looking towards the future part - strikes me as taking satisfaction at what has been accomplished - "Making this cold harbor now home"
And darn it those final repeated lines just make you feel good.
would have been nice if the recorder sang along quieter (or in tune)
Yeah. I almost just went with the album version since finding a good live one was mostly impossible.
Yeah, that gets to be a problem with a lot of songs
This video really exemplifies my love-hate relationship with The Decemberists (maybe like-dislike).
I love this song, especially on the album but they can be so pretentious (which maybe isn't quite the right definition, they are definitely very talented) and this video has that in spades. "Look at us in this public setting (a library probably) having this-sing along, with lots of people on stage and using all kinds of instruments." Ugh. I still gave it an 8 because I like the song, but it was given grudgingly.
I think this sums it up well. I enjoy a lot of their studio music, but sometimes it's just too darn much effort.
I both love their music and know that Colin Meloy must be insufferable.
Insufferable was the word I was looking for, not pretentious.
