Good morning,. Here is a thing
I know I have asked several times before, but this time I am serious. No, really.
Anyone have experience using a third-party router and mesh system with AT&T Uverse?
I understand that the Pace modem/router doohickey does not support a true bridge mode? How hard is this setup and how much of a performance gain can or should I expect with, say, a Wifi 6 mesh setup?
My main issues are that the Power line signal to my home office (2nd floor to one side of house, whereas modem/router and WAP? are centrally located on 1st floor) sometimes drops, forcing me back to a kind of weak wifi signal; the wireless signal to the upstairs tv is sometimes dodgy; and wifi is very weak to make back patio (small building in between house and patio).
So I was hoping that a router/mesh upgrade would improve over the inconsistent Ethernet over the Power line extender as well as improve the other wireless connections. I am knowledgeable enough to be dangerous to myself and others, but figure I can follow widely available instructions for DMZmode (or whatever ATT calls it) configuration. I am just nervous about sinking ~$350 or so into a mesh setup only to discover it doesn't improve my lot.
No experience with this (different ISP, different mesh network), but I know how maddening WiFi issues can be to resolve. Good luck, Doc.
About security? No. About privacy? Yeah. Chrome does not have your interest in mind when it comes to privacy. This particular article appears to be about yet another thing advertisers have figured out a way to uniquely identify people.
i’ve made the jump to FF on my computer. need to on the phone next.
I am using FF on my phone. It's...ok.
You might give DuckDuckGo’s browser a shot if you’re underwhelmed with Firefox on mobile.
Note the DuckDuckGo browser uses Chromium as the engine, the same as Chrome. It's not Chrome but won't do anything to break Chrome's dominance on the web. I'm assuming you're using Android because all browsers use Safari internally on iOS.
I use Firefox on mobile because I can easily block ads and use other full-featured extensions.
One thing I notice with FF on this site (on my phone, Samsung Galaxy S8 or S9, I forget) the text from my last LTE typically re-loads when I first try to do a new LTE in the same post. I can get past that either by deleting all of the text in the text box or by loading an LTE on another post.
That does not happen for me.
I did this post in Firefox on a Pixel 3 and the text box was empty when I clicked reply after submitting the LTE.
Not on Android, but I didn’t know the DDG browser there was Chromium-based. Huh.
Did someone say DG?
Gloop?
Our desktop informed me that it was out of application memory the other day. Chrome was the culprit. It had about a half dozen active processes of 850 MB to 1.5 GB each running on one user account.
I don’t use Chrome, but I’m going to have an impossible task to wean anyone else off it.
Chrome is definitely memory hungry but that's unusual on its own. Generally the sites themselves are why browsers need so much memory. They're so complex and interactive that's what it takes.
On the Grill in the kitchen tonight: spaghetti with homemade meatballs land Beyond Meat meatballs for the Girl) and marinara.
I had leftover grilled red onions and peppers, so I chopped those and fried a bit. Added onion powder, granulated garlic, dried oregano, basil and dill, and some salt. Stirred a bit, then added a cup of merlot to reglaze. After reducing, added a big can of crushed tomatoes, a cup or so of leftover pizza sauce (crushed tomatoes, chopped garlic, oregano, salt, uncooked), cup of water and a glug of extra virgin olive oil.
For the meatballs: 1.5 lb 80-20, 1 lb hot Italian sausage, 1 cup sourdough whole wheat bread crumbs, 1/4 cup each green can parmesan and freshly grated pecorino, 1/2 cup milk, oregano, granulated garlic, onion powder, oregano, dill, basil, salt and pepper. Two eggs.
Mix everything but the meats. Add the meats and mix well by hand. Form into generous 1/4 cup balls onto sheet pans. Bake at 350 for about 40-45 minutes until well browned.
I can't wait. The fond from the meatballs is fantastic.
Sounds delicious. I like that you are using two kinds of cheese. Every use Calabrian peppers?- wow/bang/bam.
Lately I've been making my own bread crumbs (stale baguette in the VitaMix).
The breadcrumbs were from two dessicated heels from homemade bread. My food processor actually had a hard time grinding them down. Had to use my mallet on a few chunks.
I do love Calabrian peppers. But I don't get them often.

Purple streetlights: An explanation.
Unfortunately it's not as exciting as I would have hoped.
the latest security freakout about Chrome
Should we be worried?
