What have y'all been making for breakfast lately? A couple weeks ago while looking for something easy to make on the weekend, I discovered sheet pan pancakes, and they're my new favorite thing. I can do the dishes while it bakes, and then I don't have such a daunting stack of dishes to tackle after breakfast.
Also, after making the steel-cut oats recipe bS shared on repeat for the last year, I found a recipe for brown-butter chocolate oatmeal in the NYT, and it is fantastic. I top a bowl of it with toasted almonds, dried cherries, a drizzle of maple syrup, and a splash of milk.
Ooh. Intrigued.
I have been back on the oatmeal bandwagon of late
We've had sheet pan pancakes a few times in the last year. Sheenie has decided that this year, in addition to cookies, she going to be entering the a coffee cake in the State Fair baking competition. Specifically, she's making an apple upside down coffee cake. I had some of one she baked yesterday for breakfast this morning. She's off to a good start.
The Poissonnière got a bit cross with me a few weeks ago about my breakfast habits. I’ve been eating some variation of skyr, granola, and fruit since spring 2020. The exact arrangement has standardized on 175g of non-fat, plain skyr, a variation on Stella Parks’ granola, and fresh blueberries. Occasionally I supplement the blueberries with dried Montmorency cherries from Costco. The Poissonnière is adamant I need to try other things. I find this and a 180g AeroPress coffee keep me satisfied until at least lunch and frequently into mid-afternoon when supplemented with a stick of venison jerky or spicy biltong around noon.
My granola variation omits the dried fruit and substitutes the almonds, which I’m not crazy about in their whole form, for roasted sunflower seeds. I also add 15g of hemp hearts to each batch along with the chia & flax seeds and wheat germ.
I don't like much dairy or sweet things for breakfast, so I make this super basic overnight steel cut oats recipe every once in a while. I usually add only salt or a pat of butter, though a splash of buttermilk adds a really nice touch to it..
My wife currently can't have dairy, so I've been making her some sort of egg-based breakfast just about every day, usually alternating between breakfast sandwiches and burritos.
Breakfast sandwiches are usually some combination of egg(s), ham, sausage, and cheese on an english muffin. I also got a set of silicone egg rings to help make the perfect sandwich-sized fried eggs. Among everyone in the family, I probably average making two breakfast sandwiches a day. Breakfast burritos are the other common option, and usually start with sausage crumbles and eggs, with the addition of roasted Hatch chilis, hot sauce, and sometimes cheese for mine.
My 8-year-old really loves fruit, and he and I have been enjoying prime citrus fruit season with grapefruits and pomelos. We had a golden pomelo last week that was the best I've ever had.
Polenta, basted egg, toast and avocado. If I don't make that I will skip breakfast (I know that is not good for me).
I happened to catch part of a Good Eats Rewind over the weekend, in which AB was ranting about how American distributors often label bags of cornmeal as BOTH "polenta" and "grits." He contends that grits are always white dent corn meal and polenta always yellow flint corn.
Plenty of grist for that mill.
At the start of the pandemic, I moved our largest TV downstairs where we tend to hang out more, and swapped the smaller TV back up to the flex room. Unfortunately, the flex room is the larger viewing room with the surround sound system and has been languishing in low viewership. At this point I'm not going to get to move the TV back upstairs again, and for quite a while I've been petitioning for an even larger TV...to no avail. Well, thanks to a healthy raise and bonus, in a moment of weakness Mrs Runner gave verbal approval, and after a bit of online comparisons I spent our entertainment stimulus money. Looking forward to a real viewing experience again.*

I highly, highly recommend watching the Italy-Sweden curling mixed doubles match if you're able. Really good stuff.
Was going to put some curling on this evening. Thanks for the scouting report!
This announcer seems to be doing a terrible impression of Shatner’s line delivery.
Sixth end — uffda!
Man, what a finish.

A quick thread on in the importance of being careful what data you share - even if you're the Queen. Today, Her Maj tweeted this lovely picture, gor bless er, etc. You might think that the contents of the red box would be official business. And you'd be right. 1/6 pic.twitter.com/y1RspNRUzy
