February 11, 2022: Yamas!

Word on the street is the Mediterranean diet still seems to be pretty darn healthy for you. I'm thinking about incorporating more of that into our meals at home. Anyone been living the Mediterranean life?

  1. On a bit of a print-n-play board gaming kick recently.

Utopia Engine - this was fun and a good puzzle that wasn't immediately solvable. I think I've figured out how to run the mechanisms in the game well enough that it's less challenging now, but it was a solid run of entertainment with some really fun dice mechanisms to drive the action.

MiniRogue - I wanted to like this so much more than I did. Felt too forgiving and ended up just walking through most of the levels. The little ghost is on his first play through and he's destroying everything in his path, so it's not just me.

Bargain Basement Bathysphere - Just printed this today - extra excited to work through all the mini-games and puzzles.

Want to play Crystallo next - it looks cool and different.

  2. Watching curling makes me worse at curling. I show up to our league and think, "All I have to do is hit that stone at the perfect spot and speed and we'll get a triple takeout!". I then promptly miss everything.

  3. When I was a teenager , I collected as many Frankie Rodriguez baseballs cards as I could get my hands on. Yeah that was not a wise investment πŸ˜†

  4. I finally made my first Paella today. Chicken thigh meat, andouillis sausage and shrimp were my proteins. The key, I have read, is there needs to be some crispy rice at the bottom of the pan. Well folks, I completely nailed it. OMGoodness it was good!

    1. My daughter's host family in Spain owns a restaurant. She texted me a picture of the paella she had for lunch and I told her I expect her to bring back a recipe.

      1. I browsed a bunch of recipes online. Pretty basic dish. I sauteed the chicken thighs, sausage, onions and peppers in a larger fry pan. Seasoned it with smoked paprika, salt, pepper and a pinch of tumeric. Deglazed the pan with white wine, added some chicken stock, short grain rice and saffron. Let cook down (uncovered) until most of the liquid is absorbed. Add the shrimp and some green peas, then simmer with a lid on the pan until shrimp is done. You don't want to stir the rice at all during the cooking process. So, I would just use a spoon to lift a small area of the dish to check the bottom. Ideally, the rice on the bottom gets a bit of a crispy texture. The Paella I made did not have any tomato sauce or paste. I think next time I will try just a few tablespoons of tomato paste.
