Maybe it's getting older, maybe it is I can only listen to the same songs so many times but I have spent a lot of time the past few years seeking out new to me stuff. Here is one I stumbled across last year that has been covered by a few folks. Doug Sahm and his crew, 1975 at Austin City Limits
Doug Sahm/Sir Douglas Quintet is great. Didn't really become familiar with his music until the late 80's, and this was after actually talking to the guy for close to an hour about baseball without having a clue as to who he was.
I used to spend a lot of time at a place called the 400 Bar on Cedar Ave. Knew all of the bartenders, which was cool, as I rarely paid for a drink. Anyhoo, I had stopped there one afternoon when there was hardly anyone there. One of them, an older gent noticed my hat and commented on it (I think it was an Orioles cap.) We ended up talking uniforms and hats and all sorts of fun baseball related junk. Nice guy and a real character.
Anyway, after he eventually left, Billy the manager said, "You and Doug really hit it off."
"Doug?", I said.
"Yeah, Doug Sahm."
I shook my head no.
"Sir Douglas Quintet?", he asked.
Again I shook my head no.
He walked over to the jukebox and dropped in a quarter and made this selection. "This is Doug." Needless to say I felt pretty stupid, but I was very happy to discover him.
