Any fun Labor Day plans? Think it's a staycation for us as I can't really do that whole walking thing.

Our friends bought a house with a pool. This has been both great and terrible. Great, we’re invited all the time to enjoy their tropical paradise. Terrible, like a virus the pool has infected the entire friend group with the desire to buy expensive houses with pools. I actually explored how to ban Zillow, Redfin, remax, etc from our home internet….
Anyway, I’m smoking a pile of meats and headed to their tropical paradise. I feel like and Uber is in my future.
Meh... Pools are okay. Hot tubs are where it's at.
Swimming is work, soaking is leisure.
I have a few friends with hot tubs and they seem to be a lot of work. Personally, I love my one person jacuzzi tub in our master bathroom. At least twice a week, I soak for an hour or so to relieve muscle soreness and stress. My brother had a really nice backyard pool that all our kids really enjoyed it. However, since the kids all grew up, the pool has sat dormant for the past 4-5 years.
We've had our hot tub for a year and I don't feel like it's that much work. Yeah, we have to test stuff and put some chemicals in it, but I can't imagine a pool is any easier to deal with.
Yes, pools are waaaay more work.
Nine years ago, we bought a house … that happened to have a large in-ground pool. We weren’t shopping for it. The previous owners were mostly living and working overseas (Istanbul) as a project project manager for the local one number one letter multinational. Their renters, though fairly well off and responsible (physicians) didn’t maintain the yard, let alone the pool. So, we’ve spent a lot of time and money, working on retaining walls & landscaping, patio expansion, flowers and shrubs and whatnot, in addition to replacing the pump, heater and liner over the intervening years. Kernel (11!!!) and Niblet (7) have grown up with a pool and we’ve gotten a ton of use out of it. Lots of work to keep it clean and lots of $$$ on chemicals annually, but it’s been mostly worth it. I do want a hot tub … and a sauna.
My feeling is, as with boats, it’s better to have a friend who owns a pool than to own one oneself.
Now a banya/sauna…but alas, I have one only in the dacha of my mind.
Oh, this is the truth. Some of the stories our friends tell about maintaining the pool are hilarious in the way that I’m laughing at him…..
We'll be spending Labor Day on a series of Prague-bound airplanes. While in Prague, I think we've settled on a day trip to Bratislava and also a hike in the Bohemian forest. Looking forward to some relaxing wandering.
Hope you get to czech everything off your list that you want to do.
Should you meet anyone with the last name "Nadenicek", they're probably a relative of mine.
Should you meet anyone with the last name "Novak" they probably aren't a relative of mine. It's a very common name, apparently.
If you need travel advice, you have my email.
Fair caveat, my recommendations are 10+ years old at this point and also pre-pandemic. The chances a particular place is not longer there is pretty good
Thanks. I know surprisingly many folks who have been there, including just over a month ago, so we've been getting lots of great suggestions, too
Our massage therapist is Czech and is heading there in a couple days, for 3 weeks. If you see her, don't ask for the discount! 😀
I took PTO tomorrow and we are going to Duluth on Saturday to see REO Speedwagon, Styx, and Loverboy. Other than that I've got some yard work that's overdue and I'd like to do some work on the van, it needs new valve cover gaskets and a tune-up, but it's in the shop today and tomorrow getting a rear wheel bearing replaced. The garage could use a good cleaning, too, but that's an evergreen.
I stopped by your place of employment on Tuesday and had a look through the clearance rack. I grabbed a pretty cool 3/4 sleeve shirt in child's XL. If I can lose the 5-10 lb I want to, it should fit perfectly, so there's some motivation
We've got an employee discount day coming up next month, so I'll be wearing something with Arraez on it before too long.
Working this weekend. Joint is closed on Labor Day, so we may go visit some friends who moved from Alex to Fergus. Silly move by them.
Next weekend, I was able to arrange Saturday and Sunday off, so I can play in my local golf club championship tourney. In 19 years of living across the street from the golf course, I have never played in any member events. I won't win anything, because I am not that good, but it will be fun.
The weekend of the 16-18th we are heading down to Red Wing to visit some friends and decompress.
Billy Hamilton will be with the Twins on Friday.
My BIL is getting married in late October (this is the fellow who married my sister who passed away - he has remained close with the family), and this weekend is his bachelor party. So I will be throwing axes apparently, and then probably some other games or something. Also, I have to work on Monday, at least for a while, because that's what works for a client.
Ex-Twin Spencer Steer has been called up to the big leagues by Cincinnati.
The Poissonnière’s first day of school is tomorrow, followed by a three-day weekend to observe Labor Day. I’m not sure how starting on a Friday makes any kind of sense.
That'd never fly in MN.
Songkick alerted me of this Joe DeFrancesco concert, which was kind of in poor taste. Must of been a glitch as the concert is, of course, cancelled. Still, a bit disturbing.
No refunds!
It will be approximately 2,000 degrees F here all weekend. We will be celebrating by laying around inside in our underwear.
We got invited to a friend's cabin in Nisswa, so there will be a lot of putzing around on a pontoon.
I just left the State Fair again, and it's still the greatest place on earth.
My wife's family rented a place in Pequod Lakes this summer. I got beer from the place in Nisswa. Then I drank the beer. The beer was good.
I've seen a few of these catches, and they seem fun, but they have to make this illegal, right? I mean, I'm not exactly sure how they would go about doing that, but someone's going to get hurt real bad eventually (fans included).
His cleat was stuck in the netting. He's lucky nothing happened from that.
Something's gotta change. Those nets are designed to stop balls, not men weighing several orders of magnitude more. IF anyone had been in those seats he would have hit them pretty hard. Then as sean points out, he almost got hurt himself as well
I'll be finishing up the work we've been doing on our stair handrail A bit of trimming left around the newel post, and then install the spindles. I hope to get the cutting and routing done in the early mornings, when it's only 90 degrees, instead of the afternoons when it's 105.
Then, a bunch of grading and class prep, to get ahead before I travel next weekend.
One game out. The next ten games seem pretty pivotal in determining the shape of the division race. We have seven on the road with Chicago and the Yankees, Cleveland has six at home against the Mariners and Royals before we meet them head-to-head at home next weekend. The Twins turned things around just in time, but there's still a lot of work to do to get back in front and stay there.
33 games left and 17 of them against the Guards and Sox. Those 17 games will decide the Division, although the White Sox seem to be sliding hard. We could perhaps put them away this weekend.
Pearl Jam is doing a promotion with the Yankees while the Twins are there … merch is all NY (so far as I can tell). It would be an awesome trip and venue and show. I love PJ, but c’mon Edward.
