Not looking good...
guess we're just gonna have to score weird.
Not that I know soccer, but…
It looked hopeful at times, but US just doesn’t have the passing control of the top teams. And they were missing defensive coverage a lot. They seem to have the athleticism, though.
Just a masterclass by the Dutch in sitting back and then overloading one side of the field to suck the USMNT into it before switching for the one-touch finish on the cross.
If the USMNT stayed disciplined, they just recycled, but they caught them out three different times.
Yeah, it was quite a clinic!
I'm just curious--do they use "analytics" in soccer, the way they do in baseball and now football? If so, what changes has that brought to the game?
Games are a lot higher scoring now
I noticed that. There are a handful of games in which teams have scored more than two goals!
Jeff, absolutely. Teams value possession more and don't just kick long balls up in attack than in the past. (For example, everyone now takes short goal kicks.)
I think the biggest thing is so the awareness of fitness levels to keep players fresher and to avoid letting injuries spiral out of control. I'm sure they're doing tons of stuff behind the scenes, but those are two obvious areas where the game has changed in the last ten years.
Thanks!
I think the tactic of playing keep away, take advantage of a mistake to score a goal, and then play keep away to the final whistle to win 1-0 has also fallen out of favor. Probably because so many playmakers now it’s very difficult to successfully play that style. A couple misplaced balls can lead to a few quick goals. Then you’re playing catch up.
Orioles in agreement with free-agent right-hander Kyle Gibson on one-year contract, pending physical, source tells @TheAthletic.
2022 marked ten years in MLB for Gibson. Looks like he should surpass ten years of service time next year too.
Not only ten years in MLB, but in all those years he's managed to stay in the rotation, despite having an ERA over five in half of them. You have to respect that, I guess.

The WW will be proud.
