Today is the first day of the rest of my life. Now what?

Happy MLS Opening Day to those who celebrate. I am still undecided on buying AppleTV and its MLS package. The Loons look like a midtable squad (at best) and I just dont need another streaming service in my life.
I’m not the MLS target demo, but I will say that there are several AppleTV+ programs I’ve enjoyed: Slow Horses (hilarious & fantastic), For All Mankind (compelling characters in a rich alternate reality), Foundation (beautiful to look at, still warming to the story), Black Bird (unsettling & unshakable), & Five Days at Memorial (claustrophobic & devastating).
Two new shows on Apple TV+ that are definitely worth watching - Shrinking and Hello, Tomorrow. We really liked For All Mankind, looking forward to another season. And there's a new season of Ted Lasso coming out in March, I believe.
Five days…… ….. .. I’m not a native New Orleanian, and I didn’t live here during Katrina, but the book was far greater than the tv show. Haunting descriptions of the horrible conditions.
I had the option to select 4th Marine Division HQ as my duty station in 2003. I considered it pretty strongly before electing to do another four months in the Mojave and re-roll the duty station dice. Conducting SAR missions in the wake of Katrina would have been far better than anything I actually did in my tour, but part of me is grateful I didn’t see the suffering in the aftermath firsthand.
Not sure I’m up for the book, though it sounds like it’s a vital window into an awful situation.
Now what?
start a roving lemonade stand.
My wife and I are at odds a bit on the "Now what?" If we are financially secure, I want to work part time at a non-profit. Haven't been able to physically contribute to philanthropy much due to work and other activities. I always felt like it would be a great thing to do in my sunset years. My wife? She is not interested in that.
It's definitely interesting going from "have to" to "want to".
My wife and I aren't there yet but can see it from here. With only one living at home, and him being old enough to drive, we have nights where we actually can choose what we want to do. It's a little disorienting after 22 years of taking care of kids.
When I retire I’m just going to usher as my part-time gig. Lots of Twins ushers also work other venues so I have connections all over the place.
I met a retired guy from Ireland that drove a cab in Orlando from the airport to Disney. Said it was great. Met people from so over the world and everyone was in a good mood.
We are still trying to figure the cash flow thing out. I don't yet know exactly what my pension will be (Because Bureaucracy), but somewhere around 50 pct of my final salary. We have quite a bit put away in retirement accounts as well, although I am hoping not to tap into those for another few years.
So, i'm not quite sure yet whether I need to find a paying part-time gig or just volunteering. Right now, I'm pretty happy watching the wheels go by. That will probably lose its attraction soon.
I was able to do a practice, mid-life retirement for a couple of years, and it turned out I needed to go back to work, but on my own terms. A surprising realization, to be sure.
I did one of those, but it was involuntary.
Enjoy more time with your parents, travel to see your kids. Nothing else is as precious.
Any local NGO or non-profit would be lucky to have a person with your skills volunteer a little time. That might feel a lot like The Job, but I suspect retired public servant probably doesn’t easily shake that commitment to their community.
Learn/practice an instrument or a new language? My recently-retired neighbor just started taking piano lessons from the Poissonnière’s piano teacher, who happens to be his daughter-in-law.
I know at least a couple people who retired and then drove a train at the zoo. Nice, but no thanks
I don't have definite plans for what I'll do in retirement, but I have lots of ideas. One thing I know is that I have never had any trouble finding something to do.
there seems to be twins baseball on the radio...
Split squad day at that. Nothing like seeing someone score and either not knowing which team he's on or updating recognition that he's now on the Twins.
