  1. Love, love, love that the forecast has changed. We are leaving the homestead around 1 or 2pm tomorrow to begin our vacation to Savannah. I booked our first hotel stay to be in Mt Vernon, IL. Now I see we should receive 3-5 inches of snow between this evening and noon tomorrow. Which means the first 300 miles or so of my drive is just going to be splendid. Day 2 we hit downtown Nashville by noon. Day 3 we will hit Charlotte to pick up our kids at the airport. Day 4 we check into our VRBO just south of Savannah on a river. Days 4 - 10 will be split between boat excursions, checking out Savannah, and relaxing on a deck watching the river go by. Day 11 will be dropping the kids back off at the Charlotte airport. Days 12-14 are undecided. We will watch the weather forecast and pick u a few cities to stop and visit on the way back. I don't think I have ever taken more than 7-8 days off since I entered the workforce.

    1. We spent an overnight in Ashville on the way to Hilton Head, and Chattanooga on the way back from Amelia Island; a real nice travel goal for you is don't drive through Atlanta. Even if you do like we do and stop short of Atlanta on a Saturday evening and plow through on the next morning, there'll be accident(s)/construction/act of God even before you get close.

btw, we were only in Savannah for a partial day (the Hop On Hop Off was nice); we ate at The Grove, which had some nice chicken tacos, but there's no shortage of food joints there. Hilton Head is less than an hour away and also has a lot of good food joints, too.

    2. Oh you gotta, gotta stop at dozen bakery in Nashville. The umami bread was effing delightful. The breakfast was the best thing we ate in Nashville. They also had a fermented corn and grits sourdough that was delicious.

  2. I spent much of Sunday sitting with Harper, who was having a very bad day. Lethargic and quiet and clearly not feeling well, her breathing was heavy and a little ragged, but she was still mentally engaged. We both noticed that she didn't want us to stop petting her, when we did she'd put her paw on our arms to tell us to keep going. Around 3:00 pm I went out to shovel snow. I came in just as Mrs. Twayn was checking on Harper and found she wasn't breathing and started yelling for me to come help. I could still see some slight movement in her eyes but they weren't focused on anything, I couldn't find any pulse anywhere and after a minute or so I just knew it was over. We sat in the hall with her then and cried for quite awhile. Eventually we got a sheet and I made a makeshift litter and moved her to the living room and onto her bed and covered her up and sat and cried some more. At some point in the evening I cleaned the carpet where she had died and picked up her toys off the floor and put them away for the last time. It was a miserable night and I don't think I slept more than a few hours. Yesterday morning I called the cremation service and they sent a very nice woman out to get Harper. She did a paw print for us and we'll get Harper's ashes back in about a week. We plan to scatter some in her favorite places -- the dog park, my mom's house on the lake, and the park down by the river. The rest we'll keep to have mixed with our own ashes when we finally go to that big farm out in the country. The one with all the dogs.
