Every day there are children born who haven’t seen the Yankees finish last in their division. In fact, some of those people have children of their own.
Incredibly, they've never finished last two seasons in a row. They have finished last and second to last twice, with that happening previously in the late '60s.
Probably some people born in 1991 who have grandchildren
Before posting that, I did check to see if a certain US Congresswoman was born in 1990. I wasn’t far off — 1986.
Technically, Automattic's version, not the WordPress dot org version, I guess.
Right. But that is the (probably only) way for it to happen. Company v Open Source
WGOM is on Mastodon but not in a way I like, so I haven't advertised it yet. But right now you can follow your favorite authors (so long as they don't have a space in their name).
Don't you have to sign up for Mastodon like through someone else's group or something? I thought that's how I remember it, but it's blocked at work.
Depends, I think. You can sign up for any of the large instances, or you can self-host one and federate with the larger ones so people on them can see your posts.
I’ve noticed that some of my favorite podcast hosts & networks are self-hosting instances for their personal & show accounts, which insulates them from any potential drama on instances that are largely run by (for now) benevolent despots. (But of course this requires maintenance).
Is the instance @wgom.org?
Yes. It's not Mastodon proper, but ActivityPub. So you won't see or use any accounts on the site but will be able to follow the site and boost any posts. The core issue right now is the plugin doesn't support a catch-all account and instead everything is sent out per user. Once that's fixed, and it may be by me, you will be able to follow the site anywhere on the fediverse.
If that fails, there is an instance that exists solely to run off a site's RSS feed(s). I considered that but I wanted to "own" the infrastructure more.
If you were tempted to feel bad for the White Sox new manager, well...
Found out oldest daughter is moving to St Louis for grad school in August. That means I get to watch the Twins in St Louis in August.
That could be a fun trip, but I'm guessing August isn't the best time to be in the STL.
(Huh, that's closer than I thought though...)
Not my favorite weather but she'll understand what she's getting into. Thanks to school schedules, we usually visit in August and December. My in-laws live there.
You're right on that, although thank the baseball gods the Cards aren't playing in Old Busch anymore -- there was NO air flow in the stands in that stadium.
So Alg, Wash U? If you know what game(s), I can try finangle nice tickets. (it helps that everyone here is GOSO already, too)
I saw Pujols hit a walk-off in extras at Old Busch. We sat about 5 rows from the top, so it was actually nice because there was a breeze up that high
Night game, and they'd replaced the artificial turf by then, so...better.
Yes. Wash U.
Don't have specific travel plans yet but she needs to be there by Aug 15 so I'm sure she'll get her apartment on the first. We'll probably stick around most or all of the week.
If you find tickets, let me know. I could make any day work.
never too early to put out feelers -- will do
My buddy is a Wash U alum. If he were around here instead of NY, I'd try to convince him to come.
Your buddy doesn’t live in Albany by any chance, does he?
Nah. He's a prof over in Binghamton.
Gotcha. Was curious just how small our small world might be.
We've certainly had some weird overlaps already.
Oh? One of my grad school office mates is in the political science dept at Binghamton.
Heh, yeah, he's PoliSci.
I nearly moved to Binghamton back in the day after living in Buffalo. But, y'know, the breakup (the actual one, not one of the like 5 preceding it)
I'm sorry, did you say "grad school"?
Crazy, isn't it?!
What dept?
Genetic counseling. In the med school.
Cool beans!
We have a very good college friend who is a professor in the med school (Ob & gyn) and the Center for Reproductive Health Sciences. And a Minnesota girl.
That's likely going to be my best chance to see the Twins as well. Although different milestone, the weekend before that my oldest (20) is getting married!
I'm going to see Jason Isbell at Red Rocks on Thursday evening and where I'm staying is only 15 minutes from Coors Field. And the Rockies are playing at home that day against the Brewers. And the game is is at 1:10. So looks like I will check out a game at Coors Field as well. Two bucket list items in one day. Not bad for a Thursday.
That is awesome! Both are fun.
Awesome. Red Rocks is a big bucket list item for me - someday.
If you've got the time and inclination, check out Roaming Buffalo BBQ. Ask for Rachael, and if she's there feel free to drop my name.
Coors Field is easily in my top five ballparks. It’s too bad the legendary El Chapultepec closed a couple years ago; you might’ve caught some live jazz before the game, too.
Awesome!
I still have Red Rocks on the list but couldn't swing middle of the week in May this year.

I like what you're putting out there Beau.

yeah, pb -- we'll have to make it a mini-caucus!
things seem fine in the Southside
